Description of main characters Jerry Sadler is the main character of the book. He is twelve years old. He has short brown hair, freckles around his nose and hazel eyes. He, his sister and his parents live in Hoboken, New Jersey. He and his sister are visiting their cousins Brad and Agatha for the whole month. Terri Sadler is Jerry’s sister. She is eleven years old. She also has short brown hair, freckles around her nose and hazel eyes. The only difference is Terri got deep dimples in her cheeks when she smiles, Jerry doesn’t. Terri loves exploring old cemeteries, wildflowers and bird watching. Sam, Louisa and Nat Sadler are children who live in New England. Near to Brad and Agatha. Sam’s age isn’t in the book, Louisa is about 11 and Nat is 5 years old. They’ve met Terri and Jerry on the beach. They aren’t family of Jerry and Terri. Brad and Agatha Sadler are the cousins of Jerry and Terri. They are very old. Jerry’s dad says that they were already old when he was a little boy. Summary of the book The story starts with a terrible dream of Jerry. They’re checking out the area around the old cottage of their cousins. Terri discovers a little old cemetery. One of her hobbies is exploring them, so she wants to see them immediately. They found lots of graves. Something weird was that the most of the death people were Sadlers. Almost all were Sadlers. After that they went to the beach. There they discovered an old cave. Terri screamed into it and a bat flowed out. The bat crashed on the rocks. Jerry took a closer look and discovered it wasn’t a real bat but a kite. That was a joke of three kids. Sam, Louisa and Nat, kids from the neighbourhood. They talked for a while. They also talked about ghosts. After that talk Terri and Jerry went home. At home they asked Brad and Agatha about that mysterious cave the three kids talked about. But Brad and Agatha changed subject when they started about it. Next morning they were going into the woods to find some wildflowers. But they didn’t found wildflowers but a skeleton. A skeleton of a dog. After a few minutes Sam, Louisa and Nat also came to the skeleton. They said they thought a ghost might have killed the dog. But when Terri asked more about the ghost they moved home. That made Jerry thinking. Whether Sam’s story about the ghost was real or not. That evening Terri scared Jerry by acting just like a ghost. Terri and Jerry talked for a while on Jerry’s bed. They decided to ask more about the ghost next day. So next day when they saw Louisa and her brothers Terri immediately asked about the ghost again. And so Terri got, by very carefully asking questions, slowly some more information. But then Jerry said something insulting to Sam and Sam, Louisa and Nat left the beach. After dinner Agatha asked for the beach towel, but Jerry didn’t got it. They thought they left it on the beach, so Jerry suggested to search for it. When he was on the beach, he saw a ghostly light flickering in the cave. He said t himself it was Sam trying one of his tricks. That made him wanted to climb up to the cave. When he stood in front of the cave a cold hand grabbed his shoulder. It was Terri. When he pointed at the cave the flickering light had vanished. At dinner he asked Brad and Agatha about the flickering light. But they said it was a northern light. After dinner Jerry and his sister walked along the beach and Jerry saw again the flickering light in the cave. This time Terri did saw it too. They decided to go in the cave to find out what light that flickering light was. Bit by bit they stepped into the cave. First through a tunnel, then a chamber, again a tunnel, again a chamber and in that chamber stood candles. They saw an old man in that chamber. An old man with long, stringy hair and a beak-like nose. The man stood up from his chair and walked to Jerry and Terri. They ran to the exit of the cave. When they were almost out of the cave Jerry fell on his knees with the ghost near behind him. But he could escape just on time. When they were home they decided to keep it secret. Because when they would tell it to Brad and Agatha they only would get troubles. When Jerry was laying in his bed he heard a ghostly whistle saying ‘come here’ and he heard footsteps coming closer. Jerry thought the ghost from the cave had followed him home. Jerry was very scared. But it were Sam, Louisa and Nat. Jerry invade them in and told them about the ghost. They instructed him to come with Terri to the beach the next morning. Do help them to get rid of the ghost. They didn’t tell how. Next morning Jerry told Terri about his conversation with the three kids. But that morning it was raining so they had to wait until it stops. It did in the afternoon. They went to the beach. But they didn’t saw the others. After a while they went to the little cemetery and found something very weird. Three children grave’s named Sam Sadler, Louisa Sadler and Nat Sadler. All died in the early 1600s. They ran home to ask Brad and Agatha about it. They answered that they were named for their ancestors. When Jerry and Terri asked Sam about it he said the same. After that question Sam wanted to get rid of the ghost. His idea was to close the cave by rolling a stone from above the doorway in front of the doorway so the ghost could not escape anymore. Jerry didn’t want to do it but before he could say anything Terri said yes. Jerry was powerless. Now he had to it. Next afternoon they would trap the ghost. They met each other on the beach. When they had talked for a few minutes Jerry and his sister climbed up the cave. When they were up there, Sam, Louisa and Nat ran away very scared. Jerry and Terri didn’t know why. Then they both felt a hand on their shoulder. It was the ghost. He took them both into his cave. There the ghost said that it’s dangerous to involve with ghost. `We didn’t mean to disturb you` Terri replied. `Me? ` The ghost said `I’m not a ghost. Your three friends are. ` That really shocked them. The ghost, who’s actually a man, introduced himself. Harrison Sandler is his name. Harrison told them things they didn’t believe at the beginning. But later, when he explained everything they did believe some things. After a while he let them go. Something they would never had expected. Outside they searched for their three friends. But they couldn’t find them. Harrison told them to go to the cemetery. So there they were. Jerry saw some fresh graves. He looked for the names and saw that those graves were meant for him and Terri. They were in a bigger shock than ever before. They had to tell Brad and Agatha about all. They should have done that much earlier. Just when they wanted to ran away they saw their three friends. The friends asked about the ghost. Whether they trapped him or not. We said we didn’t. Then Sam asked us to try again. Jerry said `no` but just after him Terri said `sure`. She did it to him again. When they were in front of the cave they invaded their three friends to come to them. But their friends were too scared. When it started raining the friends would come. But it was only a trick of Terri to solve who was a ghost and who was alive. After a while Harrison came out and helped Terri to trick the three friends. Harrison had a dog with him. And dogs recognise ghosts. So finally they knew their three friends were ghosts and Harrison wasn’t. When they came home, Agatha said she and Brad were worried sick. After she said that a hundred times, they told the whole story. After they’ve told the whole story they heard a dog barking. It was Harrison`s dog. Jerry let him, but the dog was still barking. Barking at Brad and Agatha. Do you know what that means?
My opinion of the book My opinion is that it’s a nice and exiting book. Also a very nice book. There are lots of things what make you thinking about it. Whether it’s true or not. I like that kind of book. It was very easy to imaging how the main characters feel. I also like the Dutch versions of this row of books. About the author Robert Lawrence Stine is the author of the whole row of Goosebumps. In Holland we know the translation of Goosebumps, called Kippenvel.
