The map of Scotland with all the places is on the next page. The four biggest cities are underlined. Where is Scotland situated? Scotland is situated between 2° and 8° WL and between 55° and 65°NB. Scotland is on the margin of the European Continent, and is on three sides surround by water. It has an area of 30.414 mile, that’s about 48.662 kilometres. On the north side is the North Atlantic Sea, on the east side is the North Sea, on the south side is the English Channel, and on the west side is the North Atlantic Sea too. The lands in the district of Scotland are Ireland, Northern-Ireland, England and Wales. Northern-Ireland, England, Wales and of course Scotland is the United Kingdom. Words: 101
How many inhabitants? In Scotland are living 5,1million Scots. That’s about 9% of the United Kingdom. The average density of population is 66 people in one square kilometre. That’s thirty times less than the average. The population has an own language and literature, law and education, organisation of the church, and a lot of history knowledge. The original language of Scotland is Gaelic. In opposition of the rest of England are there living less people in the cities and more on the country. The distribution is very different. 1, 5 of the 5 million inhabitants lives in one of the four big cities. Words: 100 Mention a few important rivers, lakes and mountains. The deepest lake of Scotland is the Loch Ness. That’s the famous lake with ‘the monster of Loch Ness’. It’s 225 meters deep. The biggest loch is Loch Lomond, it’s 36 kilometres long and 8 kilometres wide. The longest loch is Loch Awe. It’s 41 kilometres long. The highest mountain is the Ben Nevis. It’s 1343 meters high. In the south west are the Galloway Hills situated. The mountains Merrick, Criffel, and the Cairnsmore of Fleet trust out of the Galloway Hills. The Merrick is 843 meters high, and the Criffel is 596 meters high. Words: 103 How does the flag look like? It’s the St. Andrews Cross. It’s one of the oldest national flags and is started in the 12th century. Andrew was one of Jesus’ disciples, and conform the legend He worked in Scythie, and He is crucified on a cross with diagonal beams. His residues are kept. In Glasgow are living 750.000 people; in Edinburgh are living 410.000 people, in Aberdeen are living 210.000 people, and in Dundee are living 100.000 people. Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland. But Glasgow has the most inhabitants. Glasgow is situated in the south of Scotland, Edinburgh in the south too, near to Glasgow. But Glasgow is on the West, and Edinburgh in the East. Aberdeen is situated in the North East, on the coast of the North Sea. Dundee is situated under Aberdeen, it’s on the coast too. Words: 101 Tell something about the: -Government: Scotland belongs to the United Kingdom of Great-Britain and Northern-Ireland. It’s a monarch with, since 1952, Queen Elizabeth II on the head. Scotland forms since 1707 a parliamentary union with England, but holds their own right system. In the British cabinet is only one minister who takes himself with Scotland. He gives management on the government centre in Edinburgh. That centre is in London too. The minister is responsible for the activities of the departments of the government centre. Thanks to government-Blair has Scotland since three centuries an own parliament again. For that was there a referendum in 1997. 74, 3% votes for an own Scottish parliament, after that is there in May 1999 for the first time in 300 years a parliament desired. This parliament is started in January 2000. Important decisions of the new parliament are: entry of laws and specific decisions in tolls. Rest they are taking decisions about healthcare, education, accommodation and agriculture. Scotland doesn’t have a president, and is part of the United Kingdom, so the queen is official the head of the state. Words: 178
-Trade: Centuries long are the economical evolution of Scotland, also trough wars, remains by England. The entourage is that a lot of people emigrate to gain money. The financial centre of Scotland is in Edinburgh. Here is the Bank of Scotland, where de own Scottish banknotes were printed. In Edinburgh are a lot of insurance societies and investment societies. At least 80% of the Scottish land is used for agarics targets. In South- and Middle-Scotland are wide land-build imperatives, there are a lot of breeding. Tourism is very important in Scotland, also as fishery. Fishery is important especially on the coast line. Aberdeen, Peterhead, Fraserburgh, Kinlochbervie, Lerwick and Ullapool are important places with fish industry. Words: 114 -Climate: Scotland has a moderate sea-climate with soft winters and cool summers. Trough the west wind is Scotland often cloudy. On the west-coast it can hard and for a long time rain. There rains it twice times more than on the Netherlands or Belgium. On the east-side it rains that much as in the Netherlands or Belgium. In the period May to September is the temperature between 18 and 20°C, in the rest of Scotland is it cooler. In the higher areas it can snow in the period December to March. The most sun and less rain do you find in May and June. July and August are warmer, but wetter. On the end of September is de sky cooler. In the autumn is there rain, sun and storm. Words: 131 -Religion: De Scots from Ireland and Scotland are Christians. In the 6th century converted a Scottish prince, de Holy Colomba, his Pictish neighbours to his religion and joined for the first time de folks of Scotland. But since de 16th century was in Europe a war between the Catholics and Protestants. Scotland was not regret. De Highlands stay Catholic, but the Lowlands under English leverage chose for the Protestantism and the Presbyterian Church to edify. The Protestants, active supported by Cromwell, fight terrible wars with Catholics members of the Scottish king, with the Highlanders as ally. Both sides won alternately.
