a.What is fast food? It means having a fast meal, for example a hamburger with chips. Another name for fast food is junk° food because a lot of people think that fast food is junk and it makes you fat. Americans eat three hamburgers and four portions of french fries a week and in a year they spend 110 billion dollar on fastfood. There are a lot of different chains all over the world. The biggest one is "Mc Donald’s". Quick, wich you can only find in Belgium and in France, and Hard Rock Café, wich you can find all over the world, are a few others you probably have heard of. I’m going to tell you particularly° about Mc Donald’s because it is the biggest, the most famous and it was the first chain of fast food stores in the world. b.History of Mc Donald’s It all started in 1954 when Ray Kroc,a franchise-agent°, was travelling through California and he went to eat a quick meal at a small hamburger restaurant called "Dick and Mac Mc Donalds hamburger restaurant". Those two invented with their restaurant the concept of fast food. When Kroc saw how succesful their restaurant was, the idea of starting a chain of hamburger restaurants for himself crossed his mind°. He bought the restaurant and in April 1955 he opened the first Mc Donald’s in Des Plaines in Illinois. He kept expanding and today, 47 years later there are over 23000 restaurants in 120 countries. Since the beginning Mc Donald’s has sold over 100 billion burgers, their turnover is about 12.1 billion dollar and they employ over 364,000 people. The first hamburger that Mc Donald’s served was a small burger that consisted of a litlle sandwich, a hamburger, some slices of gherkin and a lot of ketchup.Later they invented a new hamburger: the Big Mac. This hamburger was made for the construction workers° who were still hungry after eating a small burger. And in 1979 Mc Donald’s came up with the idea off making a menu especially for the children. So they served the Happy Meal wich I will show you. The Happy Meal contains a small burger, a litlle bag of French fries, a yoghurt drink, a Coke and a litlle toy. Mc Donald’s as well as some other fast food chains,don’t only have restaurants. They also have Drive-Throughs. In a Drive-Through, which is also called a Drive-In in Belgium, you order your meal in a microphone at the one end of the Drive-Through and you pick it up at a window at the other end of the restaurant. Drive-Throughs are very useful for people who are in a hurry and don’t have the time to go inside and eat their meal at a table.
x.Fried Chicken. In America they have more then hamburger restaurants but they also have Kentucky Fried Chicken stores and it means almost the same as hamburger restaurants. However, you don’t get hamburgers with chips there, you get chicken with chips and you can choose how you want your Fried Chicken.
