Natural population growth= more people born than dying
Increase= verhogen
Decrease= verlagen
150 years ago nearly as many people died as were born. Many people died because of;
- Fewer doctors that were not as good
- Bad personal hygiene
- Few medicines
- Bad food (nutrient) and a lack of variety
Following the Second World War there was a period of high population growth. Since the 70s the number of births has decreased and there are increasingly fewer young people. This is called ageing. That means that there are increasingly more older people and fewer younger people.
3 groups of immigrants have come to the NL;
- Migrants from countries which used tob e part of the NL
- Migrant workers from countries around the Mediterranaean.
- Refugees.
First the men came on their own and then their families followed.
This is called family reunification. Their children often marry
someone from their country of origin. This is called family formation.
There are also people leaving the NL;
- Older migrants returning to their countries of origin
- People who study in another country for a short period
- Dutch people who want to build a life elsewhere
Allochtoon is a Dutch term for somebody who has at least one parent who was born in another country. Most allochtonen live in the Randstad (westernpart of NL), in the cities, and in these cities in certain neighbourhoods. This creates segregation. Segregation occurs when different population groups stay in their own neighbourhoods. These people choose to live together.
