Malicious delight.

We are doing our presentation about malicious delight. Also called as reality TV.
The literal meaning of malicious delight is: satisfaction about other tragedy. I think everyone knows what I mean.
We have chosen this subject because we think it’s a very interesting and actual subject. I think all of you watched a program like ‘big brother’ or ‘blind vertrouwen’. That’s the Dutch name, in English it would be ‘blind trust’.
In Big brother people live in a house with a lot of cameras. The people who watch TV can see how they live and what they say. The people in the house don’t have privacy. We like to see that.
Blind trust is a competition in which couples track whether they are to be trusted. The couples are separated, the girls in one house and the boys in the other. They are mixed up with an equal number of boys and girls who try to attract the participants.

Now I’m going to tell you something about the history of reality TV:
The last 15 years, the TV, and especially the commercial networks, has changed a lot. The IKON starts with an innocent kind of reality TV in 1978. They start with programmes like ‘hoop, geloof en liefde’, which means, hope, sath and love. Where different subjects like sex, commit adultery, and abortion weren’t taboo any more.

The last 15 years they are making more and more programmes like these. This had as result that you saw the people and their feeling on every cannel.
The public networks specialised themselves in cancer patients, incest victims and other hard distress, while the commercial networks were focused on relations and sex.
What do you think of that? Think about, after our presentation I will ask you that!

Politicians:

Now I’m going to tell you something about the opinion of Mr Dijkstal.
Mr Dijkstal is the leader of the VVD. He thinks that the TV like Jerry Springer, BB and Blind vertrouwen are unacceptable, because the participants are treated very disrespectful and bad. But he knows that banning these programmes is almost impossible, because every form of ban is against the rules. A ban is in conflict with the liberal freedom.
The VVD leader thinks that the enormously quantity of sex and violence on TV is a worrisome point. He thinks that this kind of programmes has a bad influence on people and especially on the children. But he doesn’t know what to do.
About BB he said: BB becomes crasser every day. And he’s right because the people who watch this program in France are allowed to see the sex in every detail. He thinks that the next step will be that there is a hard violence on TV instead of sex.

My opinion:

I think that this problem is a very difficult point. It’s very frustrating that we are all watching this kind of programmes. The most of us knows that these programmes are very bad but we are still watching it. I think we are watching these programmes just to relax. Sometimes we like to look to other people lives, so we can compare our lives with theirs. Another very frustrating point is that you realise yourself that most of the shows are fake. For example jerry Springer. I can’t imagine when you are in a fight that you start a video.
I think that programmes like ‘blind trust’ really go too far. It’s ridiculous that the makers of the program tell the participants that they will become famous. They don’t tell them all the disadvantages.
I think this isn’t normal any more. In the beginning of ‘blind trust’ the program looks nice, but after a coupe of days, it becomes clear that all the participants ended up with an broken relationships.
I think that producers should be more careful, they should be explain the participants what’s going to happen to them. The producers aren’t clear enough and only think about making money.
So I think these kinds of programmes must be forbidden. I don’t think that this should be against the liberal freedom. The programmes are bad for our society. I think that some of the young children get a wrong picture about love. In every program we talk about there are people who loved each other seems to fight. However The children who watch this kind of programmes think fighting in a love-affair is all normal!
So my opinion is that the programmes must be forbidden or have to make a special channel for this kind of programmes were you have to pay for. I think this is the best solution because in our country people are not that crazy.

My questions:

Who like this kind of programs? Why?
Would you like another program instead of this kind of programmes?
Would you like to be in a show as a participant? Why or not?
If they make a special channel for reality TV, would you pay for this channel?
Do you think that there are people who want to pay for it?
