Tropical Rainforst:

Tropical rainforests are rainforests who are found near the equator. Between 23 C nord of the equater and 23 C south of the equater. They are found in Asia, Africa, South America, Central America and on many of the Pacific islands.

The rainforest started in about 140 million years ago. It’s the world’s richest ecosystem. Because for millions of years the rainforest laid undisturbed. Small tribes of humans lived there. But they did no damage. So the plants and animals were able to develop and adapt in peace. The rainforest now have thousands of different kinds of plants and animals.

The rainforest has got fife layers:

· The tallest trees are the emergents, who are as much as 67 meter above the forest floor with trunks that measure up to 6.5 meter around.
· The canopy is the primary layer of the forest and forms a roof over the two remaining layers. In this layer most of the animals live.
· Little sunshine reaches the under canopy so the plants have to make larger leaves to reach the sunlight.
· The shrub layer is the layer that grows between the smaller trees of the understory and the forest floor.
· The forest floor is very dark. This is because the trees above stopping the sunlight from entering the forest. It is estimated that only 2% of the sunlight actually reaches the floor.

The rainforest have got a poor soil, so they have to find another way to get food. That’s the reason that there are nutriens cycles in the rainforest. A nutriens cycle hold in that the trees take food out of fallen leaves. They also need water, so there also are water cycles in the rainforest. Trees give off water vapour into the air by transpiration. The forest acts as a giant sponge soaking up the rainfall. Some of this water evaporates into the air. This causes rain clouds to form and more rain falls. When large areas of rainforest are removed, the cycle is broken and you create a dessert.

Sometimes people discover a “new” living local tribe in the rainforest. First people thought that is dismal, we have to develop them, because they don’t have clothes and other modern things. But now a days we know that that people only feel themself unhappy, because they think that they are stupid and haven’t got any money or something like that. So when we now discover a “new” local tribe, we will not do anything with them and let them live such as they lived before.

At this moment we damaging the rainforest by cutting down trees and burning down a part of the rainforest to farm. (That is called slash-and-burn.) We have to stop that, because otherwise there won’t be any rainforest left and then we loses our richest ecosystem!!!

Big Cities:

Sometimes a city can also be an ecosystem. Than the city need 5 million inhabitants or more.
A example from a city who is an ecosystem is Manila. Manila is the capital of the Philipines. In Manilla they speak Spanish.

People come to the city if they can’t earn any money anymore in the place where they lived before. When they were arriving in the city the first thing what they are going to do, is looking for someone who they know. After that they are going to built a house in the slums. They are also looking for jobs, but mostly they can’t find one, because there are so much people. When people were going to the city they thought that they will be happy in the city, but mostly that won’t happen.

In Manilla first were 5 million inhabitants, but 20 years later (now) there are 20 million inhabitants. That is because they don’t use contraceptive. And than lots more children are born.
