Email Assignment 6

Hey,

I recently finished reading Life of Pi by Yann Martel. It was amazing and I immediately recommended it to everyone. One friend said It’s just about a boy stuck in the middle of the ocean with a tiger. That doesn’t seem very exciting. When I first read the summary on the back cover I wasn’t to excited about reading it either. But it had been recommended to me and once I started reading I was immediately caught in the story. So, if you don’t see a reason to read a book about a boy, a lifeboat and a tiger, allow me to give you 3 reasons to read this book.

1.     A surprising amount of action and fantasy. You might think that this book will be similar to the movie Castaway. There is a big difference, however. Pi, the main character, is not stuck at sea or on a deserted island alone. There are animals onboard with him and each of them have distinct personalities that cause conflict, action and suspense.  Plus, he is at sea for an insane amount of time and overcomes the most challenging obstacles. His day to day survival stays suspense.

2.     The ending will make you want to read it again. I liked the book until I got to the ending, then I loved it. I won’t say much on this point because I don’t want to spoiler everything , but honestly the ending was a complete surprised and changed my outlook on the whole book. When I’m done going through my book bucket list, I plan on reading Life of Pi again. Knowing how it ends will give me new insights into the rest of the book.

But that will takes a lot of time so I decided to go and see the movie.

3.     There are great memes made of life of Pi.

Differences between the book and the film Assignment 8

I’ve seen a lot of books made into movies but none was almost the same as Life of Pi. Based on the novel by Yann Martel, Ang Lee’s film. There are too many movies have made the mistake of falling into the category of a visual book in my opinion. Until the point where you’re thinking, Hey, where’d my book go?

But the movie Life of Pi is almost exactly the same as the book. Of course there are some differences. In the book he tells the researchers a little bit about his younger years, but in the movie he doesn't tell anything about his youth.

The structure of the story remains the same in the book as in the film.

While both book and film share the same ending, their tones are much different and can lead the audience to different conclusions. In the novel, Pi appears annoyed with the two men and almost seems to tell them the story just so they will leave him alone. But the similarities in both the reader has to decide which story is true. When Pi tells the story in the film, he becomes visibly upset, especially when describing his mother’s death. Where the ending of the book is much more ambiguous, the tone of the film seems to suggest that Pi made up the story with Richard Parker in order to cope with the horrible things that happened on his lifeboat.

I prefer the book actually. First, it takes much longer to read it. It's like you are really in the story. Secondly, the book has an more open ending. It leaves the ending more the choice of the reader, which is in my opinion the best. It’s a real philosophical story.
