This majestic castle (on the picture) still stands today in the Carpathian mountains... It is called Bran Castle and it used to be one of Prince Vlad Tepes' temporary residences...

3. What made Transylvania a suitable setting for Stoker's novel?

The Castle is situated in the Carpathian mountains and in the Volcanic Region of Torja with its Crater-Lake and Sulfur Caves. There is botany, Caves and Canyon of the Pied Piper of Hamelin. As animals there are: Bears, wolves, lynx, wild boar, red dear, etc. And for this reasons it is dark and sinister. That's why Stoker took this place for the story of count of dracula.

BRAM STOKER AND "DRACULA"

1) Was Stoker's Dracula a successful best-seller right from the start?
Yes, it was printed out for the first time in 1897. It sold reasonably well when it was published. Only then (=when ??) he had success all over the world. Now everyone knows his story but not particularly the author of this horror story.

First Edition of DRACULA
Constable, 1897

2) What did Stoker's mother think about this "infamous" book her son had written?
She praised the book highly.

3) It is sometimes suggested that Jonathan Harker is Stoker's alter ego, but Stoker also seems to identify strongly with some other characters in his novel in so far that he gives his own first name ("Bram" is short for "Abraham") to one of them. Who is this character? What is his role in the story?

Abraham Van Helsing, he is the fearless leader in the hunt to track down Dracula

4) How does the story end? (What happens to Count Dracula at the end of the book?)
The story has a happy end. After following for days the group in charge with delivering the chest containing Dracula's body, Dr. Steward, Quincey Morris, Jonathan and Van Helsing (Arthurs friends) could to do their job right at the last moment of the sunset. On the instant, came the sweep and flash of Jonathan's great knife through his heart.

5) Did Stoker write any other horror stories? And did he write any other successful novels?
The Snake’s Pass, The Jewel of Seven Stars, Personal Reminiscences of Henry Irving, The Lair of the White Worm. None of them were as successful as Dracula.

VLAD TEPES
1) How did Vlad III become monarch of Wallachia?

His father died and there were no clear rules about succession in Wallachia. So Vlad Became Monarch.

2) How can Vlad's cruel behaviour be explained - particularly with regard to the Turks?
Vlad was always in war, he wanted to conquer land. He had a several wars against the Turks.
==>Does that explain his cruel behaviour???

3) Besides Turks, Vlad also impaled people from his own country. Why did he execute his fellow countrymen in this cruel way?
He took drastic measures to achieve his political, economic and military objectives (=> Which were?). Even against his own Country.

5) Some scholars claim that besides Vlad Tepes another historical character influenced Stoker's Dracula: Elizabeth Bathory, "the Blood Countess". Who was she? What makes scholars think there is a link between her and Dracula?

The link between Count Dracula and Countess Elizabeth Bathory can be traced back to the early 1970s. By that time, there was an upsurge of interest in the Blood Countess, notorious for murdering young women and bathing in their blood in order to retain her youthful appearance. Inevitably, her lust for blood would hurry an association with vampires.
