They’ve always wanted to be pilots, so when they grow up, they become pilots at the American Airforce. At the same time, Europe is in the middle of World War Two. When Danny and Rafe have to get a medical check, Rafe falls in love with one of the nurses, Evelyn. Evelyn also falls in love with Rafe and they get an affair. Unfortunately for Evelyn and Danny, Rafe gets asked to fly in the British Eagle Squadron which with England in the Battle of Britain. Because Rafe had always wanted to be a hero, he goes to England. Danny and Evelyn go to Pearl Harbour. One day, Rafe gets in a fight with some German pilots. They shoot his aeroplane down and everybody thinks Rafe is dead. Evelyn and Danny are devastated, but they have to get on with their lives and so they get an affair. At first they feel very guilty because of Rafe, but that is just something they have to deal with. Then Evelyn gets a letter. It is from Rafe. He writes that he’s not dead, but he had to go underground, so this is the first time he’s able to write Evelyn. When Rafe comes back later that day and finds out about Danny and Evelyn, he is furious. At the same time, Japan starts bombing the ships that are anchored in Pearl Harbour. Danny and Rafe get in to a plane as soon as they can and start bombing the Japanese. But they can never compete with them. The damage is enormous. Many people have died. America has to strike back. Because of their heroic acting during the attack at Pearl Harbour, Danny and Rafe are asked to help America to take revenge at Japan. Evelyn doesn’t want them to, because she still loves them and she’s pregnant with Danny’s baby. She doesn’t tell Danny, but she does tell Rafe. Danny and Rafe go to Japan anyway and there, Danny dies. Rafe goes back to America and he and Evelyn raise Danny’s child.
