The Lord Of The Rings.

The fellowship of the ring. Titel: The Two Towers. schrijver: J.R.R. Tolkien

Titel: The return of the king
schrijver:J.R.R. Tolkien
regisseur:Peter Jackson
Productiemaatschappij: New Line Cinema
In alles, behalve grootte. Een jaar later onderscheidde Queen Elisabeth hem als Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

Minas Tirith
The city that J.R.R. Tolkien described as seemingly "carven by giants out of the bones of the earth," Minas Tirith serves as the last bastion of man against the might and menace of Sauron. Its seven walls of ancient stone rest at the knee of Mount Mindolluin, at the end of the White Mountains. From its towers, it is possible to look out south, beyond the Anduin river to the Sea, or north, to the fires of Mount Doom. Here, we take a closer look at the capital of Gondor, and how the stage was set by Director Peter Jackson for the city to play its central role in the great War of the Ring. Pelennor Fields
The War of the Ring reaches a critical climax on the Pelennor Fields, where tens of thousands of warriors clash in the battle that will decide the fate of Middle-earth. It's on these vast plains that the armies of Sauron -- including Orcs, Easterlings and Haradrim -- lay siege to the forces of Gondor and Rohan in a bid to capture the White City of Minas Tirith. Isengard
The great circular fortress of Isengard, home to the corrupted wizard Saruman, figures prominently throughout the annals of Middle-earth. But Isengard achieves its greatest prominence during the events of The Two Towers-and the fortress pays the ultimate price. Here is a look at the stories, facts and figures behind one of the most infamous locales in The Lord of the Rings.
History
Built by the men of Gondor in the second age as an extension of their kingdom, Isengard fell into disuse during the third age until the arrival of Saruman. With Gondor's blessing, the white wizard took up residence in Isengard some 200 years before Frodo and the Fellowship would embark on their journey to destroy the One Ring. At the time, Gondor's rulers were unable to foresee the evil that would overtake Saruman, the effect it would have on their once-proud fortress, or the threats that would result to all of Middle-earth. A Seat of Power
Seduced by the promises of Sauron, Saruman fell under the sway of the dark lord. Together, these imposing figures formed an evil alliance, bent on ruling all of Middle-earth. Under Sauron's direction, Saruman converted Isengard from a place of natural beauty to a factory-like stronghold capable of creating and arming a huge army. Eventually, Saruman would put together a force 10,000 strong, including fearsome Orcs as well as the Uruk-hai warriors, a new breed of uber-warriors birthed deep within the bowels of Isengard. The Tower
Isengard's tower of Orthanc rises 500 feet above the plains, an indestructible spire of black rock. Within its walls, Saruman plots the destruction of mankind and communicates with Sauron via the palantir, or ancient seeing stones. Although not as impregnable as Sauron's tower of Barad-dur, Orthanc is capable of withstanding great assaults, including the attack by the Ents, which would reduce the rest of Isengard to rumble and put an end to Saruman's power. Saruman Speaks "The Two Towers is basically about the peaking of Saruman's power, and finally his downfall."-Christopher Lee (Saruman) The Sounds of Isengard "Isengard is really based on machinery and industry. It's the sounds of trees being chopped down and killed and industry taking over. So there's the sound of blacksmiths and fires--really the opposite of natural sound. It's the sounds of death and destruction."-Ethan Van Der Ryn, Supervising Sound Editor
An Army Assembled
For The Two Towers scene where Saruman unveils his army of 10,000 warriors, director Peter Jackson required the sounds that can only be generated by thousands of full-throated roars. So, working with supervising sound editor Ethan Van Der Ryn, Jackson went to a New Zealand cricket stadium, where he put 25,000 fans to work. "Pete went in at halftime and got this rousing response," Van Der Ryn says. "He got them chanting in Black Speech [the language of Mordor]. It's incredibly powerful to have this many people chanting in unison." Helm’s deep
Helm's Deep, the ancient fortress of Rohan, is where the first major battle of Middle-earth will be waged. Saruman's army of 10,000 Uruk-hai are sent into battle with a single purpose, to destroy the world of men. Dead marshes
As director of cinematography for The Lord of the Rings, Andrew Lesnie faced a multitude of challenges during the months of filming on the project. But perhaps the most unique came over the many weeks he worked to capture scenes for the Dead Marshes sequence in It turns out Frodo, Sam and Gollum weren't the only ones who embarked on a difficult journey through that vast, soggy landscape. Lesnie and his team were tested in their own right as they tried to get just the right look and feel for one of Tolkein's most foreboding, perilous locales. "Peter Jackson wanted an ominous feel to the Marshes," Lesnie explains. "He needed a misty, eerie, unsettling reality where there is no escape. A vast, never-ending landscape." Initially, Jackson and Lesnie considered the large marshes near Te Anau, on New Zealand's South Island. But they soon realized that location wasn't a realistic option. "We discovered that it is incredibly difficult to negotiate those marshes on foot, and a step in the wrong direction resulted in sinking up to your waist," Lesnie remembers. "We also heard from local farmers that some livestock disappear altogether. Consequently the decision was made to create our own marshes, for practical and safety reasons." That meant building a water-ready facility in their Wellington studios. "Apart from one aerial shot of the real marshes, the rest of the Dead Marshes was created on three 'wet sets', one indoors and two outside," Lesnie explains. "The biggest exterior set was a flooded carpark spanning thousands of square meters and skillfully dressed by the art department with structural landmasses and moss and vegetation transported from the real marshlands. "The set was strategically positioned facing north to guarantee maximum backlight over the course of each shooting day, and massive sky backdrops or bluescreens were backed by shipping containers and scaffold ran along the north, east and western edges of the set." Shooting was divided into distinct tanks, depending on the demands for the particular scene. "The majority of the sequences were filmed on the big, exterior wet set," Lesnie says. "The smaller outdoor set was created in the studio carpark to offer more control for WETA Workshop's 'spectral corpses' [the "dead" who give the marshes their name]. Night and pre-dawn scenes were filmed on the interior set in order to avoid subjecting the actors and crew to freezing night temperatures." But even indoors or on the warmest days, shooting the marsh scenes was a chilly affair for all concerned, especially the actors. "Their clothing would become sodden as the day progressed," Lesnie recalls. "Elijah, Sean and Andy Serkis are wonderful actors who never complain, but it was a fragile and dangerous environment to work in, and everybody could feel the dank moisture permeating their bodies. Filming Frodo falling in and the immediate aftermath required Elijah to be soaked and Sean and Andy to be wet for hours at a time. "I don't remember how cold the water was, but even though the actors had wetsuits and crew wore waders or wetsuits, it was bloody cold! You could feel it no matter what you had on." The only antidote? "Plenty of hot soup," Lesnie says with a laugh. As for creating the eerie world of lost souls--the spectral corpses that drift throughout the Dead Marshes-Lesnie credits his own crew and Richard Taylor's WETA Workshop. Taylor's team crafted prosthetic figures, and in some cases even used real people for the most realistic bodies, while Lesnie's experienced but water-logged cinematographers Richard Bluck and Brian Van't Hul shot the images for posterity. By using nets, shading and polarization techniques, Lesnie was able to curb the natural reflectiveness of the dead marshes and achieve just the right opacity for the water. Smoke machines sent steady mists floating across the set to add atmosphere and by using the massive exterior tank in conjunction with computer-generated extensions, Lesnie was able to convey the scope of the marshes required by Jackson. Even Lesnie admits he was impressed by the realism of the sets. "When you have people of the genius of production designer Grant Major, art director Dan Hennah and Richard Taylor creating environments that come alive, sometimes you would climb into the tank wondering if you were ever going to get out!" Fangorn forest
Fangorn Forest is an intimidating locale--especially if you're charged with bringing the place to life on film. WETA Workshop Supervisor Richard Taylor was handed this Ent-sized responsibility after Peter Jackson decided no real-life forest had the mix of the mystical and the mysterious called for by Tolkien's vision. "Normally, it's easy creating fantasy environments because it's totally make believe," Taylor explains. "It's almost like a math exam, if you do the equation right, it will turn out right. "But when you reach somewhere like Fangorn Forest, even the most innocent child knows exactly what a tree looks like and there's no way you can hoodwink anyone by using the smoke and mirrors that you normally use through building film effects." So how did Taylor tackle such a big job? By thinking small. Taylor brought in WETA?s miniatures department, which crafted a detailed forestscape. And to make things as lifelike as possible for Treebeard's domain, Taylor's team turned to nature itself. "Fangorn Forrest is actually built completely out of real elements," he explains, and his crew went far and wide in search of the perfect materials. "We went to the most windswept barren, vicious environments," Taylor says. "Up on top of mountain ranges and on the crest of cliffs." There were times when it was tough going-literally. "We cultivated 100-year-old gorse, which was originally imported to New Zealand by the Scots to use as hedges. But unfortunately in New Zealand it ran rampant and created these impenetrable forests of gorse that no one in their right mind would ever journey into, or God forbid, cut down. "But here we are, making Lord of the Rings, needing to build Fangorn Forest, this sea of the most twisted, distorted, crazy trees, and we discovered that 100-year-old gorse trunks make perfect Fangorn Forest trees. "You can imagine the delight of the farmer when we fronted up and offered him 100 bucks a stump. Not only was he getting rid of a pest off his farm, he was getting paid for it as well." But the gorse was just the beginning of Taylor's requirements. "Gorse is good for the trunk and the lower branches, but being as prickly as it is, it is a vicious plant with nasty barbs on it. All of that was chainsawed off. "And then with great care, another native plant equally as tortured by the high country winds was substituted for the top canopy of the branches of Fangorn." "The reason we use this plant is because the leaves are incredibly small, and building Fangorn at such a small scale we wanted to try and find natural plants that got such tiny leaves that they feel like they are a normal leaf reduced six times down." Once the trees were assembled, it was time to construct the forest itself. Taylor's team did this by placing the trees onto movable rostrums, allowing them to shift the trees from to the best positions. Then WETA prepared the forest floor by using real grass that was unrolled like a roll of carpet to fill and cover as needed. The final stage for Fangorn was placing forest litter, which Taylor pulled from an unusual source. "We got it from tearing open tea bags that we bought from Indian and Chinese food suppliers," Taylor reveals. "We created this exotic and rich floor litter for the forest that gives this lush and distorted, but extremely real world of the Fangorn Forrest. And, of course, the whole set smelled really lovely." Edoras
The meticulously crafted city of Edoras, a place of dazzling scope and natural beauty, makes a deep impression on all who see it—and it leaves an even deeper mark on those who experienced it firsthand.
Members of The Two Towers cast were wowed by Edoras’ remote setting, the sheer logistics of its construction and the production team’s attention to detail.
Here are reflections on the place from some of the actors who were fortunate enough to call Edoras their home.
Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn)
"The location for Edoras was, to me, one of the most beautiful, the most impressive. Everything was constructed on this knoll, and reading the book, it's exactly what you would dream and hope Edoras would look like, and feel like."
Ian McKellen (Gandalf)
"Everyday we went there, spirits rose, whether it had snowed overnight, or the sun was out or it was pelting rain. There was majesty to that location. A secret valley, it seemed. A place where, if it had not been for the film, one would never have visited. That was a really magical time."
Miranda Otto (Eowyn)
"The first day we arrived at Edoras was really memorable. To be picked up at three o'clock in the morning and have an hour-and-a-half drive to a set I hadn't seen before, then come over the hill and see the Golden Hall actually built in the middle of nowhere surrounded by these white covered mountains--exactly as it’s described in the book—well, it was amazing.so exactly right and to feel as an actor you had so much to work with, that was really exciting."
"It’s like when you were a child and you think about being a princess and having a palace and you wake up one morning and there it is. And they dress you up in all these fabulous costumes. It really is part of the fantasy you have as a child, I think."
Karl Urban (Eomer)
"Edoras was breathtaking. Not only because it's this extraordinarily detailed Middle-earth city built on top of this mini-mountain, but it was situated in this glacial valley with mountains on parallel sides and beautiful plains beneath."
"It was just such a privilege to be there, to actually be at Edoras. It actually existed. It took months to build, we worked in it for two weeks, and then they dismantled it so if you go back you wouldn't even know it's there."
Brad Dourif (Grima Wormtongue)
"Edoras was beautiful, and it's a situation where the actors get something which the audience never gets."
"I mean, I got woken up at 3:30 in the morning, horrible bumpy roads, I come over this hill and there's this valley surrounded by snow-peaked mountains. In the middle of the valley, marshes on one side, flat grassland on the other, there's a gnarly hill that looks like God made it from Middle-earth. It was like a piece of Middle Earth time-warped here or something."
"And on top of it is the great hall of Edoras with all these buildings on it. You go up there and everybody's in robes. You're looking out on this high hill, this pure medieval world. Medieval costumes, swords and everything and you are sitting in a time, in an environment that is going to be torn down in weeks."
Lothlorien
Lothlorien started with Alan Lee’s conceptual artwork as so many of the sets on the film do. It was his vision that started the whole process along with Peter Jackson’s very strong concept of what it should be. Lothlorien is the most magical world in Middle-earth and to that end Alan created extensive illustrative designs and pencil work. WETA was working alongside him and so we were able to begin the construction of the very small-scale design maquettes early on. It was one of the most complex miniatures to design and also one of the most complex miniatures to build. We realized that we needed to build two substantial sets right away, one which was the canopy and one which was the whole of the ground below. We built both at 1/14th scale which meant that even through the trees were in miniature, they stood up to 12 meters tall. This required us to shoot in the biggest possible interior room in Wellington. We built over 100 Elven houses to populate the branches and we hand applied over 2,000 individual leaves onto the ends of the sprays to get the feeling of the foliage that was necessary in the trees. We kept the whole miniature segmented so that it could be shot from all different angles and all of the trees were kept on winches so they could be moved around easily. A crew shot it for about four months in a set that was subtly lit and smoky. What you see in the final film has very little digital embellishment to it. What you see on screen is what was shot on set except for the actors, who had to be blue-screened and composited into that miniature. We used two techniques in filming the actors, the first was to shoot them blue-screen on surfaces that corresponded to the format of the floors. The second was totally digital, using doubles of the cast and the Elven extras. This created the feeling that the city is populated by a large group of Elves. It also created the feeling that the Fellowship can walk around as if they are in an integrated part of the environment. My job was to supervise the construction of this mass of miniatures here at the WETA workshop. We worked on this construction for six months with a team of seven people. The miniatures were primarily sculpted in plaster over a urethane core then created into silicon molds of the sculptures. We used nearly a ton of silicon to mold the trees. We then sprayed them in a rigid urethane to make the skins which were assembled around massive steel poles that would carry the weight of the extensive branches. The last sections of the branches were made in real tree material that we gathered and then coated so they wouldn’t snap or break. When we were designing the weapons for Lothlorien, we wanted to give the feeling of an organic race of people, a group that utilizes the natural forms around them. In the film, by the time we meet the Elves at Lothlorien and Rivendell, they are leaving Middle-earth to go to their sacred lands and therefore they are very much in the autumn of their years. So we wanted to create a feeling and a graphic representation of this through the design of their armor and weapons. The forms are those of falling leaves to give the impression that things are coming to an end. In doing so, we tried to create very sublime and naturalistic form studies. For example, the swords are basically like long bows of wood that are still incredibly intricate and also intense fighting weapons. But in every part of the military hardware there is the feeling that it compliments the nature around them. Lothlorien and Rivendell are both Elven cities, but we wanted to represent a strong difference in the overall manufacturing process that the Elves had adopted in creating these two cities. They are two extremely different environments. Rivendell uses the techniques of a Nordic craftsperson working on woods and stone. While, Lothlorien represents a group of people living in the treetops that have understood the harmony between their construction techniques and the trees that bear the weight of these buildings. Both designs are both inspired by the same aesthetic of nature, organic feelings, growth and the way that nature has a certain randomness in the growth of things. The world of Lothlorien was envisioned as a beautiful and ethereal Shangri-La and I am very pleased with the final results because it was such a complex miniature to create and the results have certainly paid off. Moria
The WETA Digital team is responsible for creating the digital effects, scenes and characters in the film. As a Digital Model Supervisor, I run the team that models all of the 3D elements. This includes the creatures, the digital doubles, the armies and the environmental modeling. The creatures we built include top-level characters such as the Watcher, the Cave Troll, the Balrog and the eagle. We also created a second level of creatures, which includes the crows, the moth, a fireworks dragon and Gollum. For the digital doubles, we had to create digital versions of each member of the Fellowship. We don’t use the doubles to reproduce the actors, rather we use these in distance shots, stunts scenes or fast moving shots. In developing the digital doubles we focus on creating hair and cloth that is as close to real as possible. One of the primary tools we use to get an accurate match of the actor, is a laser scanner. The actors do a whole range of facial expressions and we create laser scans of these. We also created all of the armies and crowds populate Middle-earth. WETA created a software called "Massive" which is used to create these types of scenes. In film one alone, we were called on to create over six different types of armies. This software has been used extensively and there is a whole team responsible for the operations of this software. Director Peter Jackson and the Visual Effects Supervisor see all the work we create. For example, a creature like the Balrog was created in clay first and then a dozen or more smaller model variations were produced. When Peter likes one, a larger model is created from it and then we laser scan it to create the digital file. By using the scanner, we are able to stay close to what Peter envisioned and would like to see once the process is complete. Within WETA Digital we have both the pre-production and production sides of the process. For example, in the Mines of Moria we were called upon to create the Cave Troll. The pre-production teams are responsible for the creation of the models, while the production teams create the motion of the models. Once the models are created they are passed onto the creature team, who build out the skins for the motion. It then goes to a lighting team who set up the lighting for the shot. The goal of this process is to develop a model that fits in with the environment by creating rendered images of the Troll. These are then used by a compositer, who creates the background plate for the cave and other environmental elements. Finally, the shot is built with a lot of subtle balancing to get everything looking right and is put onto film and tweaked it even more. It’s quite a process! The size of the team varies from a dozen to half a dozen people on the model making side alone. My team is comprised of a mix of people from New Zealand and all over the world based on their experience. We have people who come on board because they are so excited to be a part of anything related to The Lord of the Rings. There are a lot of real enthusiasts on the team and its great because people who know the books so well have a feeling for what everything should be like. But ultimately, what we are working to achieve is Peter’s vision of the film. Rivendell
Director Peter Jackson was keen to create a place that felt enigmatic, so that we would be left with fleeting impressions of its mystery and faded grandeur, but not a clear idea of its exact layout. The design process began quite early on in the project when Conceptual Artists Alan Lee and John Howe had the benefit of lengthy consultations with Peter Jackson, Grant Major and Richard Taylor. As soon as the right overall look was achieved, work began on creating the miniature and its environment. One of the things the design team wanted to achieve was the creation of a place in which the natural world and the culture that had settled into it had a very close affinity. So trees are allowed to grow through buildings and buildings are constructed around trees and over rivers. Set designers looked at Celtic decorative art and Art Nouveau as starting points for Elvish design, and there is also a vaguely oriental influence in the buildings and artifacts. It’s hard to put your finger on what constitutes Elvish-ness, but Alan Lee would say the strong presence of nature in the design motifs, such as birds and plant forms, a flowing elegance in the lines and forms, and a vaguely otherworldly quality. Which is what the team has tried to conjure up through a bit of creative eccentricity and nice lighting. The location for Rivendell was a discreet little corner of a Kaitoke Regional Park. After finding the spot the filmmakers wanted to use, a model was made of the site, and Alan Lee did more drawings, many of them on site, trying to establish exactly how the buildings, towers and walkways would sit in amongst the trees. There was also a large studio set, which encompassed the council chamber, Elrond’s chamber and the balcony where Aragorn and Boromir meet for the first time. There was a waterfall, the area where Narsil was re-forged and several other scenes were shot in different parts of the extensively landscaped gardens. One of the blessings the design team had with this project has been an excellent Greens Department under Brian Massey, who were able to transform grimy warehouses into lush forests often overnight, so that greenery will still be fresh for shooting the next morning. They were careful to restore any natural environments that the juggernaut of this film’s production has rolled in and out of. Helping to create Rivendell was one of the great pleasures for the set design team working on this project. Weathertop
My name is Brigitte Wuest, head sculptor, and my team in the set-finishing department worked for 18 months on the LOTR production. My team created the sculptures and carved details you see throughout the movies. Throughout the production, the process of creating the sculptures for the set was always the same. We would get the drawings from Alan Lee and he created these wonderful sketches from which to work from. We would then make a maquette out of plasticine. A maquette is a reduced model, to scale, of the final piece. Then we would show it to Alan for his approval. With the model approved, we would start by marking out the center lines of the maquette and then mark the same centerlines on big blocks of polystyrene. Then we scale it up, draw the figure on the polystyrene and cut out the rough shape first with the hot wire. To give the figure more shape, we would use a chainsaw and some sandpaper. When we started getting to the finer detail, we would then use a knife and more sandpaper. Alan was there the whole time and we worked together very well. He could describe or draw the feeling the sculpture had to evoke and I was able to read the emotions he put forth in his sketches. Alan has such a fine style of drawing. He once said to a woman who was trying to draw a rock, that she must feel the rock in order to draw it. Alan really feels the figures, the person he draws, they come alive. When I look at his drawings, I felt like our department can bring them to life when we re-create them as three-dimensional figures. Once Alan told me the meaning behind the statue of the broken king at Weathertop. Of the four statues of the kings that were there, we replicated this one in a larger scale so that we could shoot Frodo beside it. Frodo crawls under the statue and we have the king’s arm stretched over him. This shows that Frodo is protected, yet the king is broken and that shows the king’s vulnerability as well. In order to achieve a weathered look, Alan had to distress the statues on Weathertop using a hot wire. He did it himself, as he didn’t think that the creators of the pieces would be happy intentionally destroying their work. I must say that, in the beginning, it was quite difficult to watch that happen. Those four statues were the first ones my team worked on. It was quite unusual to see them all finished nicely and then wrecked. But later on we got used to it. When we saw them on set, we realized it was how they had to look and it all just felt right. At one point, Alan got very busy and didn’t have time to do as many sketches. That’s when he would leave some design decisions up to us. Sometimes he would create a basic sketch, tell us what was needed and say, "Come up with something and show me the maquette." That was fun when we got to do that. We worked on LOTR from June 1999 to December 2000. It was really, really great. When it was finished, I was exhausted. Now it’s wonderful to look back on it and to be able to look at all those photographs. It was such an amazing time as was the amount and quality of work that was produced. Bree
Casting for Bree and The Prancing Pony was one of the most enjoyable casting breaks I had. I sat down with Peter and he said, "For this town, the feel is going to be a bit weird and wonderful. It’ll have a sinister feel in the way we shoot it, but these are the sort of people where you would walk into this pub or into this place and you’d feel a little out of place because they are so unusual." And so really, anything goes! In the streets of Bree, size was important. Most of the chaps that I used in Bree were quite bigger men. In The Prancing Pony, size didn’t really matter as it was more a group of really interesting faces. I knew that the wardrobe and the makeup department would have a huge input into this, so anyone I thought was unusual would look even more so when wardrobe and makeup had been through with them. It was great actually. Normally, when you are casting, the hardest things to cast are the beautiful people. Everyone has a different concept on what is beautiful. So what I might think is beautiful, the director may in fact not. But when it comes to strange, weird, wonderful, ugly, and bizarre looking, it’s pretty much across the board that a face I think is a little odd-looking, you probably think is too. My team would go to the agents and say, "Give me some people who may not normally be commercially viable"; we were looking for actors who may not get a lot of work because their look is not what we would classify as standard. So that was fantastic! I would receive a whole lot of photos of really interesting people and these were ones that normally don’t work for people, but they were perfect for our purposes so I got those actors in. Wandering around the streets, it’s amazing the types of people you bang into. I just said to people, "Hey I think you’d fit pretty well in this, come along to this casting call". I would put them on tape and make sure they could give certain reactions. I provided Peter a file on some really interesting faces and said, "Here’s some great looks, who do you like the best?!"

The Lord Of The Rings.

The fellowship of the ring. Titel: The Two Towers. schrijver: J.R.R. Tolkien
regisseur: Peter Jackson
Titel: The return of the king

Isengard
And, of course, the whole set smelled really lovely." Lothlorien started with Alan Lee’s conceptual artwork as so many of the sets on the film do.
