The Wave is sweeping through the entire school. What started as an experiment in Ben Ross's history class is taking on a mind of its own. Students who thought they were free individuals have become dominated by The Wave, and its salutes and slogans-Strength Through Discipline, Strength Through Community, Strength Through Action-are everywhere. Only Laurie and a few of her friends recognise the danger in The Wave-but can they stop it before it goes too far?

Based on a true incident in a high school in California, this chilling story shows how easily people can be swayed by the powerful forces of group pressure.

Author Morton Rhue isn’t the real name of the author, his real name is Todd Strasser, He was born in Long Island New York, he travelled a lot, and he had a lot of different jobs, he wrote articles for magazines and newspapers too. Now he writes books, and he has a small company that produces lucky cookies. Summary The story is about a history teacher named Burt Ross that wants to do an experiment with his class, about the German people during World War II, Ross starts a movement called The Wave, it starts as a game but all the students are getting more addicted to it. All his students are now equal to each other, but Laurie Saunders and her friend David, feel that something is going wrong, and they are against the wave, Ross is put under pressure by his wife, Christy. And he is going to stop the wave, hey tells the members that the national leader is going to give a speech, but he shows a movie about Hitler, everybody is shocked, and silent. Setting The story takes place in a school in California, the name of the school is Gordon school. The story could even have taken place in our country, in our school. But this story is based on a true story in the US. The political background of this story are the cruel things that have happened during WO II, and we shouldn’t forget them. The novels atmosphere is adventure and thrilling.
Theme The writer wants to remind us of the cruelty during WOII. Main characters Laurie Sanders: She is the smart student from the class, she works for the school paper, but the other students don’t really like her. She is against the wave. I like her, she knows when something is going the wrong way, and she dares to do something about it. Burt Ross: He is hard-boiled, he really wants his plan to succeed, his wife has a lot of effect on him. He is the history teacher. I don’t like him, he’s a teacher, and he is unbreakable , it isn’t easy to change his mind. Story teller The writer himself tells the story. Type of novel It’s a frightening, alarming, upsetting novel. Title The title is really good chosen, it’s a wave that takes out almost every student on that school. The title fits with the story, it builds up like a wave, and it needs to be stopped, else something bad can happen. Passage The effect on the students was staggering. All around the auditorium they were slowly rising from their seats. A few were in tears, others tried to avoid the eyes of those next to them. All looked stunned by the lesson they had learned. As they left they discarded their posters and banners. The floor quickly became littered with yellow membership cards and all thoughts of military posture were forgotten as they slunk out of the auditorium. Laurie and David walked slowly down the aisle, passing the sombre students filling out the room. Amy was coming towards them, her head bowed. When she looked up and saw Laurie she burst into tears and ran to hug her friend. Behind her, David saw Eric and Brian. Both looked shaken. They stopped when they saw David and for a few moments the three team-mates stood in an awkward silence. What a freak-out, Eric said, his voice hardly more than a mumble. I have chosen this passage, because it illustrates good the end of the wave. Personal appreciation I think it’s a really good book, it fits good for every student of every type, it gives you something to think about, and you won’t forget it very fast.
