2-Summary

This book is about a boy called Adrian Mole aged 13 3/4. He starts his diary at the 1st of January and writes a piece of text everyday.

He is worried about lots of teenager struggles like girls and spots. At one day he decided to become an intellectual and wrote his first poems to the BBC and he joined the library. A new girl became part of his class and he immediately fell in love with her, but more boys did. He also joined a group called ‘’The Good Samaritans’’ they do social work for elderly people. He needed to look after Bert, a dirty old men. His life is getting worser and worser, and when it isn’t worse enough his best friend Nigel is dating with Pandora. Adrian came up with the idea he could be an intellectual, he sent a letter to the BBC for advice and joint the library club,His father started drinking and there were more arguments between his father and his mother. suddenly there neighbours got divorced, Mr. Lucas there neighbour was visiting his mother all the time because she was ill and Adrians father was at work. unfortunately for Adrian his mother got into a relationship with Mr. Lucas and she broke up with his father. Adrian kept living with his dad. Bert Baxter was taken to a hospital, he visited the hospital together with Pandora. A few days after the visit to the hospital Adrian got a relationship with Pandora. Adrians father starts drinking more and more and got unemployed. The relationship between Adrian and Pandora was good fun but Adrian wanted something new, he got a small relationship with Barbara but they split up in three days. Pandora ignored him on his birthday. But the next day they are in love again. After a while his mother came back and she split up with Mr. Lucas, his father and his mother came back together. And all of a sudden his father has stopped drinking because he found a new job.

3-Characters

Adrian Mole:Is the main character, he is 13 years old and thinks he is an intellectual. He faces lots of problems especially teenager problems. 

Adrian faces lots of problems, his first spot was a major struggle for him especially when he met Pandora. His parents are fed up with each other and fight all the day, he tries to make their relationship better but he didn’t succeed. He also has some struggles with Bert Baxter because he complained about Adrian.

Adrian is really developing in the book, he is getting his first spot, gets a relationship etc. 

He also experienced fights between his parents, his body became taller and he started shaving hisself.

Pandora: Is a new girl at school, lots of boys fell in love with her including Adrian. Pandora and Adrian start doing things together and get a relationship.

Pandora also deals with some problems she is adored by lots of boys. And gets in trouble at school for wearing red socks together with Adrian.

Adrian knows Pandora because they are going to same school.

Pandora has developed too she got several relationships and she went to a new school which is hard because you need to make new friends. She has also created some spite at school.

Bert Baxter: Is an old men which Adrian need to take care of because he joined a group that does social work for elderly people, He is smelly and drinks a lot. Bert wasn’t satisfied with Adrian and was also taken in to hospital. 

Bert has some problems he is a dirty old man living in a dirty house and drinks a lot. He is angry about the service of Adrian Mole, He is taken into hospital because of his leg and he is angry because he wants to get out of the hospital, until he met Queenie.

Adrian knows Bert Baxter because Adrian needs to look after Bert.

Bert developed in the story because he learned how to deal with people and accept not everyone is perfect he also got a girlfriend.

Adrian attracts me the most because he gets rebellious during the book. He developed the most during the book, From measuring his penis to wearing the wrong color socks to school.

4-Setting

All the events take place in England in a small village near Sheffield. Except from one week in which Adrian is on holiday with his mother and Mr. Lucas in Scotland. Most of the events take place at Adrians school or near/ in his house.

The story almost lasts about one and a half year, it takes place between the first of January 1881 and the third of April 1882, . The book is in chronological order because Adrian is writing in his diary every day. This means there aren’t any flashbacks or previews.

5-reading experience 

When I read the summary on the back of the book it thought this book would be very boring and the first 80 pages were, but when I read the next pages I started liking it and wanted to finish the book. So when there are some books written by Sue Townsend with an interesting summary, I would like to read them.

I was surprised by the ending of the book because it all ended up well. Bert Baxter got friends with Adrian and got into a relationship with Queenie, His parents got back together, his teenager spots are disappearing, he (and his penis) are developing and he is still in a relationship with Pandora. That he is still in a relationship with Pandora is the best thing because ‘’love is the only thing that keeps Adrian sane’’
