The complete title of the book is "The Picture of Dorian Gray", written by Oscar Wilde. Edited with an introduction by Isobel Murray. Published by Oxford University Press. This edition Of "The Picture of Dorian Gray" was first published by Oxford University Press in 1974. Fist issued with revisions as a World's Classics paperback in 1981. Reprinted in 1982, 1984, 1985, 1986 and twice in 1987. The edition I have was printed in Great Britain by Hazell Watson & Viney Limited, Aylesbury, Bucks. Because Lord Henry Wotton Henry warns Dorian he's going to grow old and ugly, Dorian wishes to never grow old and that the portrait will become old instead. he even says he'd give his soul for that. At the end of the story, Dorian destroys the portrait and they which appearance again. Dorian dies. Author- information. Oscar Fingall O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was born in Dublin in 1854. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and Magdalen College, Oxford where he founded an aesthetic cult. His first volume of poems appeared in 1881 and between 1887- 1891 he published a number of short stories. In 1884 he married Constance Lloyd and his two sons were born in 1885 (Cyril) and 1886 (Vyvyan). Then he got into a relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas and Douglas' father charged Wilde for homosexuality. He was found guilty and sentenced to prison for two years, where he wrote "The Ballad of Reading Gaol". When he got released he joined Lord Alfred Douglas in Italy. He died at 30 November 1900. Summary. The main character in the book is Dorian Gray. He is a beautiful young man in his twenties. A friend of his, Basil Hallward, paints his portrait. A friend of Basils, Lord Henry Wotton, warns Dorian that he soon will be old and ugly. Because of that Dorian wishes never to grow old and instead his portrait will grow old. He said he would even give his soul for that. Dorian spends more and more time with Lord Henry Wotton. He has a hedonistic way of life and influences Dorian a lot. He gives Dorian a book about enjoying life and nothing else and Dorian strictly follows the rules of the book. Than Dorian falls in love with the actress Sybil Vane. He asks her to marry him and she accepts. Dorian takes his friends to her play. She plays very bad and when Dorian asks her for an explanation she tells him she can't act being in love. because she now knows how it feels. Dorian breaks up with her for that and Sybil kills herself. That is the first time the portrait changes. In the following years Dorian is just enjoying life and all the people he meets get into trouble. But every time he does something bad, the portrait changes. One day Basil visits Dorian, because he heard all kinds of rumors about Dorian's behavior. Dorian shoes Basil the painting and Basil tries to tell Dorian he is doing the wrong thing and in a bust of insanity Dorian kills Basil. He orders a friend, who is a scientist, to get rid of the body. That friend commits suicide as well, because he can't live with the burden. Now the hands on the portrait are covered with blood. By accident Dorian meets Sybil's brother, who wants to kill him, but he gets killed by accident during the hunt. In the end Dorian wants to better his life. He tries to be good, but the portrait stays the same. Then he decides to destroy the portrait, but with doing that he destroys himself to and he dies. They switch appearances again. The people who find Dorian don't recognize him at first; the painting is of a young man again and Dorian is old and ugly. Theme. There are two main theme's in the book. The fist is 'appearances are deceptive'; you should never judge a person by his looks. The second is the Faust- theme: selling one's soul to the devil in return for either material things or spiritual gain. As the devil never keeps his promises, there is nothing to gain from his bargains. The autobiographical elements in the book are great sensuality, homosexual adoration, aesthetic ideas, a hedonist and decadent lifestyle. Genre. This book is an example of alternative realism. In this book fantasy, magic and the supernatural play an important part. Motto. There is no motto in the book. Motives. The motives in the book are everlasting beauty, fear, murder and rage. Idea. The idea of the author is that what is inside counts, not the outside (he prefers the soul above good looks). Characteristics. The main character in the book is Dorian Gray (round character). Dorian is very beautiful and wants to stay that way. He is also very rich and easy to influence. At fist he was pure, bit because of his obsession to stay beautiful, he turns into an awful person. The other characters in the book are Basil Hallward, Lord Henry Wotton and Sybil Vane (all flat characters). Basil Hallward is a painter and a good friend of Dorian. He paints his picture and puts all his love for Dorian in it. As it turns out Basil is in love with Dorian. Lord Henry Wotton is a very close friend of Dorian. Dorian looks up to him, because of his ideas of life. Lord Henry tries to seduce Dorian into his own hedonistic life and succeeds. Sybil Vane is an actress. Dorian falls in love with her, but breaks up in a mean way, so Sybil kills herself. Structure. The book counts 236 pages and when you read thirty pages an hour, you can read the book in eight hours. The story begins at page one and ends at page 224. Page 225 till 236 contain explanatory notes. At the beginning of the book are and introduction by Isobel Murray, a note on the text, a select bibliography and a chronology of Oscar Wilde and a preface written by Oscar Wilde. The book has twenty numbered chapters. An objective omniscient narrator tells the story. The book is in chronological order and has hardly any flashbacks. Time and space. The story takes place at the end of the nineteenth century. The told time is shorter then the telling time. The story starts when Dorian is seventeen years old and ends when he is forty or fifty years old. There is a thirteen year pause in the book. Where I got my information from. www.scholieren.com , and www.digischool.com . Part 2. Personal perception. Ik vond 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' een leuk boek om te lezen. Oscar Wilde maakt geen gebruik van moeilijk taalgebruik, dus was het niet moeilijk om het boek door te spitten. Af en toe staan er wel moeilijke woorden in, maar de betekenis van die woorden is wel te begrijpen als je het woord leest in zinsverband. Het irritante van het boek vond ik wel dat er bij behoorlijk wat woorden cijfertjes boven staan, die verwijzen naar de 'Explanatory Notes'. Natuurlijk kan je die wel gewoon overslaan, maar zo iemand ben ik nou eenmaal niet. En als je die telkens weer op moet zoeken, raak je een beetje uit de tekst en uit het verhaal. Verder is het ook zo dat de meeste woorden verwijzen naar zinnen en woorden die Oscar Wilde in zijn eerdere werk heeft gebruikt of naar zijn favoriete auteurs. Daar weet ik verder niets vanaf, want dit is pas het eerst boek dat ik lees van Oscar Wilde. Dus op een gegeven ogenblik ben ik maar gestopt met de 'Explanatory Notes' er op na te slaan. Verder vind ik het boek heel goed en makkelijk geschreven. Het taalgebruik is duidelijk, en dus geschikt voor een wijd lezerspubliek. Zelfs voor de mensen die niet Engels als hun moedertaal hebben, is het boek dus ook goed leesbaar. Dat in tegenstelling dat veel Engelse auteurs (van wie ik boeken gelezen heb). Het onderwerp van het boek vind ik ook heel gaaf: voor eeuwig jong in ruil voor de ziel. Dit doet mij denken aan een boek dat ik gelezen heb voor Nederlands: 'De ontdekking van de hemel'. Hierin sluit Francis Bacon ook een pact met de duivel, alleen dan namens de gehele mensheid. Op zich zou dit verhaal zich ook af kunnen spelen in deze tijd. Het wordt een steeds meer hedendaags onderwerp. Er zullen, denk ik, veel mensen zijn die in ruil voor hun ziel mooi willen zijn, meer welvaart, welzijn of materiele zaken willen ontvangen. Het is een erg realistisch verhaal, dus het zou zo kunnen gebeuren, op een aantal zaken, zoals het veranderende portret, na. Maar dit portret moet je dan ook niet letterlijk, maar figuurlijk opnemen. Het portret laat Dorian's ziel zien, die langzaam slechter en slechter word. Het hele boek is doordrenkt van de symboliek, zoals de dertien jaar pauze in het boek (13 is het ongeluksgetal) en het bloed op de handen van het portret (symboliseert de dood van Basil ; Dorian heeft Basil's bloed aan zijn handen). Ik vind symboliek in een boek wel plezant, want dan moet je zelf een beetje gaan nadenken en dat vind ik toch wel belangrijk in een boek. Het moet niet allemaal voorgekauwd worden; je moet er zelf een beeld bij kunnen vormen. Verder vind ik de karakters in het boek goed uitgewerkt. Je komt veel te weten over hun denk- en leefwijzen. Ik kan geen sympathie opbrengen voor Lord Henry Wotton. Hij is een manipulator en geniet van zijn macht over mensen. Hij helpt Dorian helemaal de vernieling in. Ik kan wel sympathie opbrengen voor Basil en Sybil. Ze worden allebei indirect vernietigd door Lord Henry, terwijl ze alleen maar goed bedoelen. Tot slot wil ik zeggen dat dit boek een absolute aanrader is voor mensen die van een goed en ironisch geschreven verhaal houden. En het niet erg vinden om voor een boek te moeten gaan zitten en hun inbeelingsvermogen moeten/ kunnen gebruiken.
