Reading assignment
The murders in the Rue Morgue
By E. A. Poe
In this book the writer describes the process of mental analysis in the first six pages. After these pages, the story begins...
It all started when the writer met Mister Dupin in a bookshop in Paris. The writer tells about the way he met Mister Dupin and how they lived together.
After this part the readers get the whole story of the supposed murders in the Rue Morgue, by means of newspaper articles.
The next part starts when both Dupin and the writer, participate in the investigation. Dupin demonstrates the superiority of the analytical mind.
He finally manages to solve the so-called murders, and in the meantime to make a fool of the chief of police.
It took me a while to figure out how exactly this story was built. At first, I didn’t understand what this mental analysis-thing did in the story. It was at least confusing to begin a story with.
It wasn’t until the end of the story that I finally realised what it was all about.
Once I understood the structure, I saw the beauty of it.
The story of the killing gorilla and how the animal managed to break into the house and than escape again, is fantastic. It is great how an awful thing such as the killing of two people can be full of humour.
Although the reading itself was quite difficult, (the English of this book is much more complex than the one I’m used to read) I was thrilled by the story. As a reader, you are almost a witness of the two friends solving the mystery.
I surely recommend this book to you, and perhaps, I’m going to read more stories by E. A. Poe.
