this work made me think, but I do not no if it has been useful to me. It appealed to me, because it is a really thrilling book and, though it is all fantasy, it is realistic, because of the detailed descriptions. Outline: part one: The fellowship of the ring. The magic ring the hobbit Frodo Baggins inherited proves to be the one evil ring, made by the wicked lord Sauron. Gandalf the Grey, a magician, tells Frodo that he should go to Mordor, where the ring was made, to destroy it, because if Sauron gets it back, he will use it to rule Middle-Earth with his dark powers. Frodo, accompanied by his friend Sam, Merry and Pippin, sets out on a dangerous journey, carrying the ring with him. They encounter hostile black riders, meet friendly elves and were rescued by Tom Bombadil, who is as old as the world, being all goodness. At an inn they meet the ranger Strider, who’s real name is Aragorn an who later turns out to be a good friend of Gandalf. He guides them to Rivendell, where t56h white council assembles. the council discusses the problem of the ring and Frodo learns that Sauron is threatening the country’s near Mordor. Gandalf reveals that his chief, Saruman the white, has turned traitor and so the ring must be destroyed as soon as possible. Frodo takes this task, accompanied by Sam, Merry, Pippin, Gandalf, Aragorn(Who claims t be the rightful king of Gondor, near Mordor), Legolas the elf, Gimli the Dwarf and Boromir, son of Denethor, Steward of Gondor. The fellowship has to deal with Wargs and Orcs and with the most fearful of all, a Balrog. Fighting him, Gandalf and the Balrog fall down and vanish. Aragorn takes over the leadership and they visit Lothlorien and the beautiful queen Galadriel, who wears one of the three elf rings. Out of this country, Boromir tries to take the ring from Frodo to take it to Gondor, but fails. Scared of this treachery, Frodo flees, accompanied by Sam. Part two: The two towers
In an attack of Orcs Boromir is killed and Merry and Pippin are taken. They escape and flee to the ancient forest Fargorn, where they meet Treebeard, an Ent. He tells them of his hate against Saruman, who took his territory and let Orcs upon it. Led by Treebeard, the ents march to Sarumans citadel, determined to destroy it. Meanwhile, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli followed the traces of the Orcs and met a company of Rohan warriors, who tell them they killed the Orcs, but didn’t see Merry or Pippin. Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli also entered the forest and saw Gandalf, miraculously returned from death. He is now no longer Gandalf the grey, but Gandalf the White. Together they travel to Rohan, where they deliver king Theoden from his counsellor Wormtongue, who is a spy for Saruman. Together with the Rohan army, Gandalf ride out to attack Saruman. When he reaches Saruman’s citadel it turns out that the ents have destroyed it and Saruman and Wormtongue are held hostage. Gandalf expels Saruman from the council of magicians. Wormtongue throws a magic crystal stone at Gandalf, which turns out to be of great value. He sets out to Gondor, where a war against Mordor is expected. Frodo and Sam discovers that they are being followed by Gollum, a creature who claims the ring as his property. Frodo takes him, against Sams advice, as a guide to Mordor. Gollum takes them into a dark tunnel, where Frodo is attacked by Shelob, a giant spider. After having Gollum to flight, Sam discovers that Shelob has killed Frodo and beats the spider of. In despair Sam decides that he has to destroy the ring. He puts it on his finger, so he becomes invisible. Before he can leave, he sees Orcs taking Frodo away and hears them say that Frodo is not dead, but just paralysed. He does not know what to do, save his friend, or destroy the ring. Standing there, the Orcs take Frodo away and shut the gates. Part three: The return of the king
Gandalf and Pippin arrive in the land of Gondor, where they have to tell Denethor, who’s ruling as steward of the lost king, that his son Boromir is dead. Gandalf is very anxious not to tell Aragorn is coming to claim the kingship. Meanwhile the threat of war between Gondor and Mordor grows. Gondor needs help from the men of Rohan, but it is not sure that they will be in Gondor on time.
Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli are still with Saruman, from where they stet out with king Theoden and his men. Looking in the crystal he sees that war is about to break out in Gondor. So he rides as fast as possible, leaving the Rohan men behind, and takes a dangerous short-cut through the paths of death.
The war starts before Aragorn has arrived. The will of the defenders is weakened by the magic of Sauron. Denethor withdraws into himself after his son Faramir has been wounded and close to death. Gandalf takes over the commands, but Mordor breaks through the city walls.
Then the men of Rohan come and the tide seems turned, but then king Theoden dies and all seems lost again. But suddenly the rangers of the north, led by Aragorn come to the rescue and Gondor is saved for the moment.
Denethor has gone crazy and lays his son Faramir, supposing he’s dead, on a funeral pyre, but Gandalf pulls Faramir out. Though very ill, he is still alive. His father throws himself into the fire and is burn to death. Gandalf finds out that Denethor had become insane using another magic crystal. Faramir is cured, when Aragorn lays his hand on him, proving he is the rightful king.
In the meantime Sam enters the fortress of the Orcs, still wearing the ring that makes him invisible. Frodo and Sam escape and after a long journey the finally reach Mount Doom, where the ring was made. Standing on mount Doom, Frodo can not part from the ring. He is in the power of the ring and says: The ring is mine.
Then Gollum, who has followed Sam and Frodo, attacks Frodo and bites the finger with the ring off. Celebrating his victory, Gollum accidentally steps to far and falls into the depths. The one ring is now destroyed and Sauron is defeated. The great war is over.
The hobbits return to their homes in the Shire and find it ruled by the evil Saruman. The hobbits kill him and his assistant Womtongue. they restore the law and order and make the Shire into a peaceful country again.
Frodo decides to go away from Middle earth, because his long contact with the ring did him no good. He, Gandalf and many elves set out from the grey havens to a new country, leaving his friend Sam behind.
Time and Place:
The story goes from April 3018 to September 3021, Middle earth era. In the story there are many moments where the characters tell or hear about earlier events in the history of Middle-earth. The story is not chronological. It takes place in Middle-earth, a non-existing world. The book includes a map of this Middle-earth.
Storytelling:
The story is told as if it were history and through the eyes of several characters.
Thrill:
The book is very thrilling, because of all the events that happen and naturally because of the main event. You read on to know if Middle-earth will be saved. Tolkien makes the book more thrilling to change the view constantly. When you read about someone doing things, you wonder what happens to the others.
Themes:
Then Lord of the rings has to main themes: The war between good and bad, and The quest of a company of heroes-the fellowship of the ring. These themes are related, because the company of heroes is the good. The book deals also with basic human values, like greed, envy and selfishness against charity, humility, integrity and nobility. The writer does not force the reader a moral lesson, but leaves him free to draw his own conclusions.
Characters
The main character is Frodo Baggins, a modest hobbit, who becomes a hero, saving the world from the powers of Darkness. His character develops during the book. Other important characters are the other members of the fellowship:
Sam, the hobbit who does everything for his master Frodo and never leaves him alone, Gandalf, the magician, who becomes an even better magician during the book. Merry and Pippin, the two younger hobbits, Aragorn, who transforms from a ranger into a real king, Boromir, who shows that the ring can make you possessive, and Legolas the elf and Gimli the dwarf, who become friends. Gollum, a fish-like creature, shows the power of the ring during the book. The evil power in the book comes in the form of Sauron, the eternal evil ruler.
Title:
The one ring to rule all the rings Sauron once made as instruments of black magic, is the Lord of the rings. This ring must be destroyed to stop Sauron from ruling the world.
The title of the first part, the fellowship of the rings is about the company that sets out to destroy the ring. The two towers of part two are the Tower of Barad-dur, where Sauron lives and the tower of Orthanc, where Saruman lives. These are connected by the magic crystal. The king in ‘the return of the king’ is Aragorn, who is the rightful king of Gondor.
Relation text and Author:
J.R.R. Tolkien was deeply interested in Germanic, old Norse and Old English literature. He was influenced by old Scandinavian and Germanic Myths. The fellowship looks like old story’s about King Arthur.
Conclusion
I think the lord of the rings is among the best books I have red so far. The theme might not be very original, but is described very realistic and much more credible than other fantasy literature. Sometimes it is difficult to remember all the different story-lines, but that is compensated by the completeness of the book. Underneath the thrilling adventure the story deals with very important values. There are a lot of poems in the book, which I also liked. The author made an appendix with the history of middle-earth, to make it look even more realistic. The end was satisfying, because the hero goes to a nice new world. The book is absolutely worth reading every page.
