The Hunger Games
Title and Author
The book is called The Hunger Games and is written by Suzanne Collins
I’ve read no books at all written by her. I know she’s 55 years old and born in Hartford.
She’s an American and started writing in 1991. She started writing scenarios for children’s cartoons. Her first children’s novel, Gregor the Overlander, was inspired by Alice in Wonderland.
Setting
The story takes place in District 12 in Panem, and in the Arena. Panem is the doom image of what’s left of the USA after it gets destroyed by war and economical collapses in the future. After this, the country was divided into 13 districts. One was destroyed by a war. The Arena is a place at an unknown location. You can kind of guess where it is because it’s described as a forest where it can get very cold. It makes me think of northen USA. I think that it would’ve been much more difficult to imagine if it took place in the here and now. Panem is firmly ruled, and the people are constantly being repressed. I think if these events happened in the USA now, they would’ve been in a lot of trouble.
Summary
The story starts with Katniss Everdeen her sister, Primrose Everdeen (Prim) getting chosen to compete in the annual Hunger Games, a event where 12 boys and 12 girls must fight until only one remains. Katniss takes her place, and sets off to the Capitol, the capitol of Panem with Peeta Mellark, the other tribute, to prepare for the Hunger Games. Luckily, Katniss is used to being in the wild. Peeta and Katniss have a plan. To pretend that they love each other. This will get them sponsors. Once the Games start, she is constantly on the move. Then she sees Peeta with the Careers, who are well-trained children who have prepared for this their whole lives. She gets warned by a little girl, Rue, who she forms an alliance with, and then things start turning around. She blows up the Careers’ food supply. Then Rue gets killed. Katniss kills the murderer. That night, there is an announcement. That if both of the districts’ tributes live, they both win. With a lot of tricks and traps, Katniss and Peeta win the games.
Main character
Katniss Everdeen is a 16 year old girl who poaches to feed her family. She is very skinny. In the arena, she wears a leather jacket and trousers. She has dark brown hair. She is brave and very smart. I like her because she always stays calm and acts right. Because of this I would of course act like her, If I, of course, could keep calm in such situations.
Title explained
The book is called The Hunger Games because it’s all about, you guessed it, The Hunger Games. I like the title because I dislike titles that are very cryptic, and like straight forward titles.
Theme
The story is about love and fighting. Katniss needs to fight to survive, and still let the audience think they’re in love. Although Peeta is really in love with her, Katniss is not sure how she feels about him. It’s also cruel because all of it is a tv-program and a way to repress the districts.
Opinion
I don’t like this novel, I absolutely love it. It keeps getting more and more interesting.
Although it starts off slow, It gets more and more awesome as you progress through the book. ‘’I couldn’t stop reading’’ –Stephen King. You want to know what happens next. When Katniss is just drinking water, the second after that, she needs to sprint away because she’s under attack. My conclusion is that the book is exciting, catchy and even a tad bit romantic, as you can read above. I would recommend this book to everyone who is between the age of 12 and 15. Boys and girls. Yes, the main character is a girl, but that doesn’t make the story any less cool because It’s written so good.
