Author: Suzanne Collins. The Hunger Games is the first book of the Hunger Games Trilogy, which also consists of Catching Fire and Mockinjay.
Background: America, somewhere in the future.
Time: The story is set in the future, about seventy years after a big war between ‘the Capital’ and the (at that time thirteen) districts took place. The capital won, destroyed the thirteenth district, and made the other districts live in great poverty and hunger, while they stole all the supplies. The biggest punishment – and a way to show the districts that they are in control – of the capital are ‘the Hungergames’. In which a boy and a girl of every district are chosen to fight each other until death, for the capitals enjoyment.
Narration: Katniss is telling the story in first person.
Character development: Peeta manages to develop from a little shy to a big hero. He has saved Katniss before (something she still can stand, but does in return) and still keeps an eye out for her. The Hungergames have one positive effect on him; he dares to show his feelings. Something that takes an 180 turn with Katniss, the Hungergames make her unable to trust anyone.
Genre: Science Fiction
Theme: Trust. In the current state of living you’ll never know who to trust. People will do anything for food, and the capital is watching you everywhere. You need to survive, but also need to keep close to your family. The trust-issues are even worse when you are supposed to kill each other! Everyone knows it’s almost impossible to make it on your own in the arena, but how do you know the person you are working with isn’t going to kill you in the middle of the night? And how do Katniss know if Peeta is really in love with her, or if he’s just doing an awesome job in pretending so to gain sponsors?
Personal opinion: I loved this book because of the whole new world it opens to you. You can’t imagine a world in which one district will be able to control all the other ones – and make up something as terrible as the Hunger Games. The constant nervousness of Katniss affected me as a reader, I was afraid and still curious to turn the page.
