Genre: modernist novel, jazz age novel, novel of manners
Setting: time--> summer 1922 place--> Long Island and New York City
Theme(s): The decline of the American dream, the spirit of the 1920s, the difference between social classes, the role of symbols in the human conception of meaning, the role of the past in dreams of the future.
Style: The great Gatsby is written by experts with you in mind.
Sometimes uses the author words that I don’t know. The sentences are not too long or just well-constructed, so you don’t get lost in a long sentence.
Structure: its incessant movement from one time period to another, tending to return to the past while building a picture of brief in 1922. This is very much in keeping with the idea expressed in the final line of the novel, where the verb beat has the same form in both the past and present tenses: “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”
The book is divided into nine chapters, that all have roman numerals but no further title.
Quote: “The modesty of the demand shook me. He had waited five years and bought a mansion where he dispensed starlight to casual moths--so that he could come over some afternoon to a stranger’s garden”
I chose this one, because everything what Gatsby had and did was for Daisy. I think that this is one of the important things, because otherwise the story isn’t correct.
