The author has chosen this title because the main character of this book changes a lot during the period this book is written. The author thinks the colour purple itself is a surprise but is everywhere in nature. Celie the main character of this book turns more and more to nature during this book. Also the independence of Celie because when Celie and Shug go buy a new dress for Celie she chooses the color purple
The book takes place in the beginning of the 20th century till half 20th century. The story happens in America in a little village and a part in Africa in Olinka a village in the middle of the forest. The main characters are black, the circumstances of black people in that time were very bad, they didn’t had any rights at all. The most of them were slaves or worked on cotton fields. So You can imagine that the main persons in this book weren’t very rich. The story
I think the author wrote this story to let people see how it went in that period. How the people had to live, and how mean they were treated. So the story is about slavery, about the gap between black and white. But also about love and not being loved. I don’t know whether the story is based on a real life story but I know that many peoples have lived such a sorry live. Characters
There are a lot of persons in this book that appear a lot in the story, but the main characters are Celie, Nettie, Shug Avery, Mr. (Albert) and Daddy. Celie: Is a black young woman who has everything in live against her. She thinks she’s ugly. The only persons in her live that she care about are her sister Nettie and God. That changes when she meets Shug. She learns that there are people in the world that care and love and when she meets Shug, you can slowly see her change and begin to love live. Celie is definitely a round character. Nettie: Is Celie’s younger sister. Wants to learn. She ends up a lot better, she goes to Africa to be a missionary. She writes Celie a that time and loves her a lot. Nettie doesn’t change a lot during the story so she is a flat character. Shug Avery: Is a attractive woman who knows exactly what she wants, no men can handle her and she sticks to her own will. In the beginning she doesn’t like Celie at all but later they get best friends and lovers. She helps Celie changing and to come up for herself. She is also a flat character because she doesn’t change a lot, she just stays herself. Mr. (Albert) : An attractive young widower who wants to marry Nettie but has to settle with Celie, he beats Celie and treats her bad. He also loves Shug. And later he changes and gets nice. Daddy: Is the man who Celie and Nettie call daddy but later on in the story they discover that he only is their step daddy because their real parents are dead. Narrator
The story is told by Celie because the book is made as a diary. Celie tells the story to the only person she thinks she can trust and that is God. Later on in the book the letters been written to Nettie and also are there been placed letters of Nettie to Celie. But that is later on when Celie discovers that her husband
Mr. hides all the letters from Nettie from her. Personal opinion
I really liked the story, because it is so beautiful written you can truly enter in a part. I also like to read a diary stile it is easy to read. And you have a feeling that it is truthful. The story itself was also very beautiful. Of course I think it is disgusting how people were treaded back than (and sometimes they are still) but I think the author did a good job to let it seem very real. I always read books in which stand a problem central. And I’ve seen that there also is a movie about this book so I wille certainly watch the film too. The style in which the book was written was also very typical because the author tried to make the story as real as possible. She did that by writing it in old English and with a lot of grammar faults and mistakes because Celie didn’t had no education. In the beginning that was a little bit hard but when you were accustomed to that writing style it also was a bit funny.
