Romeo and Juliet

Written by William Shakespeare in 1595. Romeo and Juliet is believed to be based on a story called Mariotto and Gianozza, by Masuccio Salernitano (1476).

Two families are constantly quarreling with eachother. The heads of the families are simply known as "Montague" and "Capulet". The Prince of Verona forbids them to ever argue in public again, or they’ll die.
Juliet Capulet is expected to marry a nobleman called Paris.
Romeo Montegue falls in love with Capulet’s niece Rosaline.

He goes to a ball organised by Capulet to find her. Rosaline isn’t there so he falls in love with Juliet. He is recognised by Juliet’s cousin Tybalt, who calls for his sword. Capulet stops him and lets Romeo go.
After the party, Romeo sneaks into Capulet’s garden to catch a glimpse of Juliet. They declare their love for eachother in the famous balcony scene.
Romeo and Juliet decide to marry the next day. without their parents’ permission.
Friar Lawrence, who marries the two, hopes this is a way to unite the two families.
Tybalt awaits Romeo to revenge the incident at the ball and Mercurio joins him. Mercurio is killed by Tybalt by mistake and Romeo kills Tybalt. The Prince decides to punish both Capulet as well as Montague.
Romeo is sent into exile so he tries to meet Juliet for the last time. He succeeds but is nearly caught by Capulet who entered Juliet’s room to tell her that he has agreed to fix a date for her marriage with Paris. She tells him she doesn’t want to marry Paris, but Romeo. Capulet is furious.
Juliet goes to friar Lawrence, who gives her a potion that’ll “kill” her for 42 hours. This way, Juliet will be “dead” on teh day of her marriage to Paris. In that time the friar’s messenger will tell this to Romeo, so he can rejoin her once she awakes.
But the messenger is unable to reach Romeo, so once he returns to Verona he thinks Juliet’s dead. He also buys potion and kills himself. Once Juliet awakes, she finds Romeo lying next to her, dead. Juliet claims she cannot live without Romeo, grabs a dagger and stabs herself to death.
