book report
- The main characters
Quentin:
His nickname is Q. He is 17 years old and he is in love with his neighbour ever since they met each other, but Margo, her neighbour, doesn’t knows that. He is an introvert type of person and hardly ever goes to a party, he’d rather game with his friends. He doesn’t like drinking or drugs. His wish is that Margo would fell in love with him
Margo Roth Spiegelman:
She is the only one with a full name because there are no other surnames given. Margo looks like a happy, spontaneous and adventurous girl, but in fact she uses it as a mask to hide her depression. She decides to go away, because she thinks that she doesn’t belong here. So she goes to “paper towns” and leaves several hints behind her to see if anyone could find her.
- The setting
The story plays in Orlando, in a suburb called Jefferson Park. This is the place where everything happens. The place Orlando is not the thing that matters, but the main reason why chosen for Orlando is because of the new housing, the builds are poorly made and give the look of a paper wall, a reference to the title. Another big place in the story is the house of Margo. This is the place where a lot of discoveries were made. I like the way of the describing things: Margo says to Q how the walls look like papers.
- The time
The story plays in the present time. You can see that from many things, for example the newspaper, the use of mobile phones and the use of cars. The newspaper is about a crime that was committed which Margo and Q saw when they were younger.
- The narrator
The whole book was written from Q’s point of view. It felt like you looked backwards, after the mystery was cleared and saw step for step how all the pieces felt together. This was a nice way to see the story told. I have never read a book like this in this particularly point of view, but it made the book better.
- Theme
The theme of the book is the experience of being an young adult. Q is struggling with him being in love with Margo. Margo is struggling with herself. She want to go away for her problems and doesn’t like to face them.
- Explain the title
The title is given to the book because of what Margo thinks of the city they are living in. She said in the book that she thinks that the houses look like papers.
- Briefly describe your favourite scene
I didn’t like the beginning of the book because I didn’t get why it’s in there. Margo and Q were already friends when they were younger. They cycled around when they found a corps in the park. Q panicked, but Margo was calm, she came closer to the body and played around. I didn’t knew why this part was in there. So that’s why I find it strange.
- Example of the things you liked, and didn’t liked
I really liked the way of writing. It was very pleasant to read. You could read it easily because there weren’t much difficult words. The story was chronological, what made it ever better. I didn’t like the ending of the book. It was a happy ending and that is something I don’t like
- The ending
When Q finally discover Margo, they talk about the meaning of the poems of Withman. Margo tells Q that she doesn’t want to go back. She thinks it’s too embarrassing to go after al she did. She said she is in love with him, but that her parents told her that he was pointless. Now she knows better after she was alone for a while. She missed him and Q told her he felt the same for her. They kissed and they decided to see each other in the near future.
- Which character would you like to be
I would love to be Q. He is adventurous, he like to play video games and doesn’t go to big party’s. That is basically me, so that is great. He goes on a quest to find Margo. That also interests me, I really like solving mystery’s
