8 It’s a regional novel.
9 It’s about working. “One pair of hands” because she can do only one thing at a time.
10 I didn’t like the book very much. It was very boring and didn’t take place in my time so I can’t imagine myself in the story.

The story is about a girl “Monica Dickens” (the author). Her life was very boring until she decided to get a job. She reviewed the possibilities. She turned to cooking lessons but they weren’t a success. She went to an agency and got a job as a cook but that was terrible. A few days later the agency rang her up and offered her another job. She had to do washing and ironing and odd jobs. But that job was terrible too. Well, so far she didn’t seem to have been much of a success as a working girl. She tried many other jobs as a housemaid in different houses and people. She tried to do her best but it’s useless. She was very tired so she stopped looking for a job. At the end of the book she found out that it all was a waste of her time. She goes to rest a lot and after that she’s going to do all the nice things that she hadn’t the time for when she had a job. In those days it was not at all normal for a girl to get a job. They prepared for marriage and children (that is to say the upper class)

It is interesting that this book has recently been republished having first been published in 1939, perhaps because of the current popularity of Downtown Abbey and the fascination with Upstairs Downstairs life. Monica Dickens wrote this book aged only 22, already a lively and interesting writer with a subtle sense of humor. For women who now work outside the home as well as cook and do their own housework today the chapters devoted to Monica’s stories of working as a full time cook general in quite small households are amazing, perhaps less so when she mentions the all- prevailing grime and soot of pre war London.
