Oliver Twist (summary)

Oliver Twist was born in the parish workhouse. His mother died soon after his birth. So Mr. Bumble, the boss of the workhouse, gave him a name: Oliver Twist. Oliver grew up at the parish workhouse, but he didn’t like it because he had to do a lot of work and he didn’t get enough food. But he liked an old lady called Sally Mann. Sally took care of the children when they were ill. He had to come to the court of justice because he wasn’t very nice to Mr. Bumble, he asked for more food.
Oliver wasn’t welcome anymore in the parish workhouse. Mr. Bumble brought Oliver to Mrs. and Mr. Sowerberry, he was an undertaker, they took him to their home.

Oliver Twist sneaked out of the house and escaped to London. The Dodger, he was a vagabond, found Oliver on the street and took him to Fagin. Fagin was a beggar. Oliver had to steal a lot of handkerchiefs for Fagin.

But one day somebody saw him stealing a handkerchief and he was arrested as a thief. He had to come to the court again. The judge sent Oliver to jail for three months.
One of the bystanders of the theft, Mr. Brownlow, said to the judge that Oliver didn’t do anything and the judge allowed Mr. Brownlow to take Oliver to his home. Mr. Brownlow put Oliver in a bed, because Oliver was sick. He remained in bed for a few days.

Meanwhile Fagin and The Dodger looked for Oliver, but they didn’t find him and quarrelled.
Oliver had to bring some books to the library and Fagin saw Oliver and took him home.
He had to stay with Fagin for a few days.
But Nancy, she was a helper of Fagin, helped Oliver to sneak out of the house.
A friend of Fagin, Bill Sikes, he was a murderer too, tried to catch Oliver. Bill caught Oliver at Miss. Rose Maylie’s house. Then the family of Rose Maylie followed them and shot down Oliver and then Bill Sikes escaped.
The next day Miss. Rose Maylie found Oliver and called the rest of the family. The complete family looked after Oliver and when Oliver was completely fit, they wanted him to stay. Of course Oliver said yes, because he liked the family very much. But one day when Oliver was with Rose and her mother, Oliver saw Fagin and Monks looking at him through a window. Nancy discovered that someone was plotting against Oliver for some reason. Nancy also found out that there was some kind of connection between Rose and Oliver. But after having told Rose’s advisor Dr. Losberne about it, she is discovered by Noah Claypole, who in the meantime had become a member of Fagin’s gang. Because of that Nancy was murdered by Sikes. On his escape from the crime Sikes accidentally and dramatically hung himself. Fagin and the rest of the gang were arrested. Fagin was executed just after Oliver visited him in the condemned cell in Newgate Prison.
Monks’ plot against Oliver was disclosed by Mr. Brownlow. Monks appeared to be Oliver’s brother. Monks didn’t tell anyone about it, because he wanted the inheritance of his mother himself. Oliver’s father’s will stated that he will leave money to Oliver on the condition that his reputation is clean. Oliver’s mother and Rose were sisters. Monks received his share of the inheritance and goes away to America. He died in prison over there, and Oliver is adopted by Mr. Brownlow.
