Number of pages: 113 Author : John Steinbeck grew up in Salinastal in California. He studied literature and after he completed this course he wanted to be a journalist. But he became a writer and had a huge break through with the novel The Long Valley. He also wrote other well-known books such as Tortilla Flat, Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath. In 1962 he received the literature Nobel price. Six years later he died. Summary: Lennie, a very simple minded and hard working man travels together with his best friend George from ranch to ranch to find work. Lennie likes to pet soft things; this brings him often into trouble because most of the time he doesn’t know his own powers. At the last address, in Weed, he just wanted to feel this red dress. The girl didn’t like this so Lennie panicked. George and Lennie took off to another ranch. Lennie likes to pet soft animals, but he always kills them because he pets too hard, George arranges to get one of the puppies from Slim, also a ranch worker. But he may not pet it until a couple of weeks, because they're too little now. But Lennie can't wait and pets the dog. When the dog dies, Lennie panics again. George has told him that they are going to get a little house with some land with pigs and rabbits. George also told Lennie that he is going to tend those rabbits, if he isn't going to do wrong things. Now he killed the little puppy, he thinks that George won't let him tend the rabbits. On Sunday afternoon most men are outside, playing horseshoes. Lennie, despite the rule not to touch the puppies, plays with one of them. He of course accidentally kills it. As he sits there the boss his wife comes along and during their talking she lets Lennie feel her hair. Lennie does so, but to rough, Curley’s wife gets frightened, Lennie panics and the result is that he breaks her neck. He goes to a place near the river where George has told him to hide. The ranch workers found out that Lennie had killed her and they immediacy start looking for him, including George. George had taken a gun and went to the place where Lennie was hiding. He shoots him in the neck. The other workers consider George as a courageous man who has captured a killer.
