Write down the following data about the novel

  • Title: Notes on a scandal
  • Author: Zoë Heller
  • Year of publication: 2011
  • Publisher: Penguin Books
  • Number of pages: 243
  • Illustrations: N
  • Young adult literature: Y

Assignment 2:

  1. Give a detailed description of the cover of the book.

At the cover of the book are two womens. One women at front looking to the right sight and she is in the red light. The other women stends behind de women at front. This women stends in the dark looking straight forward. This women looks older then the women at front.

B. Explain in your own words if the cover is a good one or not, when you

    think of the story.

Yes I think it’s a good cover, because the two ladies at the cover are Barbara Covett and Sheba. Sheba is the woman at front, because the story is about her. Barbara is in de back, because she tells the story and is in the story most of the time also in the back.

Assignment 3:

Summarize the story, by using 15 – 20 sentences.

  • 'Barbara!' he shouted, cutting off Elaine in mid-stream. 'Do come and meet shebra hart.'
  • Sheba dispayed no such new-girl jitters and for this I admired her.
  • Yet, in spite of this, I found myself possessed by a strange certainty that we would one day be friends.
  • Sheba remembers being by his child-like posture of concentration- the way his tongue was peeping out from his mouth and his left arm was curled protectively around his labours. This was Steven Connolly
  • As time went on and Connolly's visits became routine, he was emboldened to volunteer more of his insights about art and his ideas about the world.
  • And then, in a sudden rush, as if he had been holding his breath, he said, ‘I’m really into you, Miss.’
  • She was about to reach out her hand and pat his shoulder when Connolly’s face suddenly came pressing in at hers.
  • ‘What is your relationship with him?’(said Barbara). ‘I suppose you’d have to say we’re involved. I mean…we’re having an affair.
  • Things were also going badly between her and Richard.
  • ‘I mean, you are aware of her unusually close relationship with one of the Eleven boys?’ (said Barbara). Bang’s face seemed briefly to inflate before crumpling in on itself.’No’ he wispered.
  • Connolly was still not returning her calls and she was finally confronting the possibility that she had been dumped.
  • ‘The headmaster rang us today.’ Mrs Connolly said. ‘He wants us to come in and see him tomorrow about Steven. I say to Steven, “What can he want to see us about?” And he starts crying. He told me everything.
  • Sheba had been called in to face the music, but she had refused to come and the police were on their way to her house.

Assignment 4:

Describe three events in the book that you feel are very important for the story. Also explain why you think they are important. Use a maximum of 30 words for each situation and a maximum of 30 words for each explanation.

  1. The first important event is when Sheba comes working at the school. I think this is a important for the story because at this moment she first met Barbara and Barbara tells really good in the story what she first thougt of Sheba and how she looked.
  2. Also a important event is when Sheba first met Steven Connolly at the Homework Club, where is was sitting at the back of the room. This is the begining of where almost the whole story is about, because from this moment on she gets more and more feelings for Connolly
  3. The last important event is when Barbara finds out that Sheba has a affair with Steven Connolly. Barbara was looking for Sheba when she saw her talking to Connolly at Regent’s Park Road down by the trees. Later that evening she and Sheba sat down at the studio of Sheba and at that moment Sheba told Barbara about the affair. This is importent because later on in the story Barbara use this

 Assignment 5:

Choose an important event in the book, one that’s important to you, and not one from the scenes from assignment 4.

The first kiss between Sheba and Connolly after Connolly told here that he is really into her was for me the most importent event, because this is the moment that Sheba really knows that she is feeling something for this boy. Before the kiss between them she kept denying that she felt something for him, because he was a student and she was a teacher.

Assignment 6*:

When you look at the genre of the book, are there any other books that belong to the same genres? Try and find three other titles. Which of these three appeals to you and why? Explain in not more than 40 words.

  1. Love falls, Freud, Esther (1963-)
  2. The woman who went to bed for a year, Townsend, Sue (1946-2014)
  3. What I lost, Ballard, Alexandra

What I lost appeals most to me because when i read the summary I liked the story. I find the storys of people who have a eating disorder always very intressting to read, because I can not imagine that someone doesn’t want to eat.
