Summary 1984 is a book from George Orwell. Orwell was a famous writer. 1984 is his last book. He wrote other books like "Animal farm" too. This book tells the reader the story of Winston Smith. Winston lives in a world where the party controls every aspect of life. He lives in what is called Oceania, we would say in London. He is old enough to remember the life before the revolution, but he don't know very much. The party has a leader. A man who is called Big Brother. Everywhere are posters with his face and the slogan "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU" on it. The eyes of the man are camera's which are following everyone who comes nearby. There are telescreens too. That are screens which can't go off. They see everyone, hear everyone and talk to everyone. The life is controlled by four ministries. The ministry of Peace (minipax) which occupies with war. The ministry of love (miniluv) which occupies with hate and torture. The ministry of plenty (miniplenty) which is responsible for economic affairs and the ministry of Truth (minitrue) occupies with documentation. Winston is working in the minitrue. He workes on the Record Departement or recdep. His job is to change the wrong predictions of the party. There's a proverb from the party that says "who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past". That's what the party is doing by changing all these things. Then, one day, Winston meets Julia. Julia hates the party and is trying to escape. She wants to go away from the party. Together they find a room without a telescreen, in a house of a proles. Proles live the same as we live and they are afraid of the party. They do nothing for the party but nothing against the party too. Julia and Winston will do something against the party, but then they are found. The man who let out his room appears to be an agent of the Thougt Police. Winston comes in the ministry of Love and he is tortured by electroshocks. He confesses all his crimes and a lot of other crimes too. Winston learns the essention of doublethink. Doublethink is to think whatever the party is telling you to think, without seeing arguments against it. Winston learns the meaning of the three slogans of the party. All seems to be contradictory, but in doublethink they are right. I don't explain the meaning, because that's very difficult to do with at most 500 words. The slogans are very important in the book, because they explain exactly what ingsoc (english socialism) for strange way of thinking is. The slogans are: War is peace
Freedom is slavery

ignorance is strenght
At the end of the book Winston has changed his mind. He likes the party, big brother and ingsoc. Then is he shot in his neck. Even without wrong ideas. That's the target of the party: to have no enemies, because all have changed their minds. Analysis It is very simple to explain the title. The book is called "nineteen eighty-four" because the story happens in 1984. The book is a science-fiction book. We now live in 2001. We all know that the story didn't really happen. All the same there has been a lot of protest, because the Hungarian War in 1956 was said to be a direct consequence of the book 1984. There are three main characters in the book. The real main character is Winston. Winston lives in a time which is totally controlled by the party. Winston works on the ministry of Truth. He works on the Record Department which occupies with documentation. Most of all with newspapers. Winston doesn't like the party. He hates big brother and the telescreens. Winston is about 40 years old. He isn't sportif and he drinks a lot of Victoriagin. He is divorced and he has no children. He is born before the revolution, so he knows the life without the party. He is a bit naive and that is his fault. The second maincharacter is Julia. Julia hates the party too. She works on the Fiction Department which occupies with fiction and porno. She is 26 years old. She is volunteer in the Junior Anti-Sex League. On that way she isn't marked. She hates Big Brother too and she wants to stop the controll. She falls in love with Winston and they try to escape from the party. The last maincharacter is O'Brien. O'Brien is a boss in the party. Winston and Julia are thinking that he is against the party. They go to him and he helps them. But then, when Julia and Winston are in the ministry of love, O'Brien comes. O'Brien is from the Thought Police and he tortures Julia and Winston. In fact, he is one of the biggest leaders of the party. The story is situated in and around 1984. It's simple to see that, because it's the title. The setting is Oceania, we should call it London. There are a lot of modern things and all the buildings that we now know are destroyed. Personal Response c. I don't think that the story could have really happened, because around the whole world should happen the same thing in the same time then. That is impossible. There are always and everywhere people who think about it and see that it isn't the right way. In the book are a lot of modern things, but it is told that there is not so much money for the science. A lot of inventions without enough money? That's impossible. In a smaller country than the world it can happen. It has happened in Germany after the second worldwar. 1/3 from the people was a traitor. In Russia it happened too. The communists controlled everyone. This book was said to be the motive to the Hungarian revolt. It's fantastic that a book can do so much. d. Look to the cover! e. I was searching for a popsong on the Internet. I have found two popsongs and I can't choose between them so I took them both. First of all Big Brother's "leef". It is on the page behind is. The reason is very simple. The program Big Brother is called so, because in the book are camera's everywhere too. Out of this reason is there the song itself. The artist says that nobody is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes and that is normal. In the book doesn't that happen. When you think something wrong (crimethought) you will be tortured and shot. The second song is "I'm Outta Love" from Anastacia. It's about love, but when you remove the words about love, you see a cry of distress. It is most clear in the lines "set me free, let me out this misery. Just show me the way to get my life again. 'Cause you can't handle me". It is just what Winston and Julia say. The hate it to be controlled all day and night and they want to be free. f. The book started to interest me in the library. The book had a very colored cover and
it was a "c-book". I don't like simple stories, so I read longer and more difficult stories. That are most of the time "c-books". When I saw the writer I would read this book. In the second class Jantine did her bookreport about "Animal Farm". She liked that book very much. I took the book and I began to read. It was difficult, but it was a fantastic story. My parents told me about the Hungarian revolt and I found the book much more interesting. I have read this book twice and I still like it.
