Maanmeisje

“De winter liep ten einde. Op de heuvels, aan de voet van het donkere dennenbos, verschenen al natte bruine plekken. De meisjes liepen over het grindpad. Ze hadden alle drie stevige laarzen aan, het grind knerpte onder hun voeten.” This is the opening section of the book called Maan Meisje. It is written by a woman called Kjersti Scheen and it is the most implausible book you’ll ever read. It is printed by Lemniscaat and translated with the financial means of Norla. The translation is done by Emmy Weehuizen-Deelder. And it is done wonderfully.

Kjersti Scheen who started as an illustrator of children books received many prizes for her book. Maanmeisje was awarded the Literatureprice of the Ministery of Culture in 1994 and the price of school libraries. This book is totally different from other books she has written. This is a drama story while most of her other books are crime stories such as the Teppefall which she has written in 1914. But like all her books this one is also set in Norway and close by Oslo. In Glydendal to be exact.

The book is called Maanmeisje because the friend of the main character has written a song Maanmeisje’ and he compares Cindy with her.

The book is about a girl named Cindy. Cindy is popular, goodlooking and good at school. In the book she falls in love with Helge, one day he calls her for a date. ‘Hoi ik ben’t…..Helge.’ ‘Ik vroeg me af of je zin had om nog even naar buiten te komen.’ But their relationship is still a secret. The author describes the emotions and thoughts so well that you would fall in love with him too. She describes him well without making it one of the thousands of girly books.

In the book Cindy is a normal girl, which makes it easier to put yourself in her position. She has a normal family with one brother and a mother and father. Her father is not a family man though, he doesn’t like his daughter to hug him and pays more attention to her brother. This doesn’t often bother her. Later her father encourages her to do more sports and eat less. As with most people, Cindy can’t stick to her diet.

The sickness of anorexia is so well described that you nearly feel like you have it yourself. You feel just as said as Cindy you get touched by the way the author has described her emotions. It is a great comfort to know that on the end every thing turns out well. Even if Anorexia Nervosa is an illness which is far away from your world, this book will make you very close to it.

If you think the book encourages people to become Anorexic, you’re wrong. On the contrary it discourages people to eat less. It is a great comfort to people who have Anorexia or people who are close to it. It touches you and helps you understand the emotions of the girl. Though I say you won’t find out the thoughts of the other people in the book. By the actions described by the author you can still understand what they are going through.

The author not only describes in a wonderful way what Cindy feels and thinks, but also the change in the family. The change in the general atmosphere and the atmosphere sensed by Cindy. The difference in family and family occasions. The author makes you feel like you are in that room sitting down eating dinner with an anorexia patient. Or not eating.

This is the most fantastic book you will ever read, whether you are interested in the illness, have anorexia or not. Because the emotion and atmosphere is described so wonderful that you will love it. Toen pakte hij haar hand en samen liepen ze verder door de zomernacht.
