The twelve years old boy John Ridd was a farmer who lived in the village of Oare, in the county of Somerset. The story begins on November 1673 in the town of Tiverton, when John was at school. It was five o’clock and John saw Jan Fry who wanted to pick him up. Normally he didn’t. Because his father always picked him up from school. Jan Fry said that his father was very busy, John didn’t believe him. The journey to Oare was very long, when they where riding they saw a coach, rich people were sitting inside it. A half hour later they came near the Doone valley. They saw a few Doones with a little girl. When they were home his mother was crying because Carver Doone murdered his father. John was very angry and he swore that he should kill Carver Doone. On February 1676, when John was fourteen, he went fishing in the Doones valley. When he was tired he felled in sleep. When he opened his eyes again, he saw a girl next to him, her name was Lorna Doone and she was eight years old. They liked each other very much. Seven years passed, 1683 it was New Year’s Day; John was driving with a friend near Doone Valley. John saw Lorna and he started to think about her again. He decided to go to her. So he did met her. When he met her for the second time and that day Lorna told John that she had to marry Carver Doone, but she didn’t like that. John did go to London and when he came back he gave Lorna a ring with a blue stone. Two months passed by. Then a servant of Lorna “Gwenny” brought John a message. In the letter stood that she wanted to met him in the morning. And so he went. When they were there John asked Lorna to marry him, Lorna said that she loved him, but that they could never get married. A few days they met each other every morning until Lorna didn’t came, John was very worried, so he went to Lorna her house. She told that her grandfather was dying and when he past away Carver should marry her. John and Lorna did met John one time until john heard that Lorna’s grandfather was past away. Then John escaped with Lorna to his home. After a few weeks Lorna got a message from Caver that they should kill John. She old John that and when they came John beated the Doones. A few weeks later a relative of John told him a story about Lorna she wasn’t a Doone, she was a lady, lady Dugal. She was the girl who sat in the coach on the day that his father was murdered and she was the little girl who was with the Doones on the same day. The title of us book is Lorna Doone. The Author is R.D. Blackmore. And the Genre is a short story. The story takes place in England round 1673. And the point of view of the book is the first person narrator, but we tell it in the third person narrator. The Major characters are John Ridd and Lorna Doone. And the Minor characters are Jan Fry; he worked on the farm from John Ridd’s father, Carver Doone; he still wanted marry Lorna, Lord Brandir, Gwenny; she is the servant from Lorna, King James and Queen Mary. When John told Lorna al this she said that she loved him and that whatever there would come she loved him and she would marry him. Days passed John and Lorna were happy together until one day John came home, Lorna was gone and she left an letter for him…. Bladzijde 44 brief voorlezen. After that day John waited for more letters but they didn’t come. John thought that Lorna had forgotten him. A few days later John went to London to help a friend in London saw he Lorna she was a friend of King James and Queen Mary. Many rich and important men wanted to marry her
because of her beauty and land. John and Lorna met each other and Lorna said that she still wanted to marry John. A few days later saw John three men with a rope standing by a house of an important man, lord Brandir. John watched them until midnight. Suddenly saw John that they were going into the house and he followed them. Then John saw that they were robbing the lord and he stopped them and tied them up. When the king heard about that he let John come to his palace and said that he from now on his name would be Sir John Ridd. After two months left John London. He had to look how it was on the farm and with his family. In the spring, Lorna returned to Exmoor and she married with Sir John Ridd. In the Church they married and when they wanted to kiss somebody fired a gun. Lorna fell on the ground. And John ran out of the Church and jumped onto his horse. John rode into the moor and then he saw Carver. He followed Carver into the valley. But there Carver was in the black bog and that pulled him done. John rode to the Church. His mother tells him that Lorna wasn’t dead. My own opinion: I like the book because I understood it and it was not very difficult. I found the end unexpected because Carver shouted Lorna but Lorna wasn’t dead. I recommend this book to other pupils because it was easy to read. A note about the author
