Theme:
This book is about making choices, but also about the things that have to do with the IRA (Irish Republic Army). They fight against the Catholics in Great Britain, but especially for freedom, with attacks like bombings. So you can say that they are terrorists.
Setting:
The story takes place in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It happened in this age.
Main characters:
- Michael Dillon, a hotel manager.
- Moira, she’s Michael’s wife. Moira thinks that her looks are very important. So important that she has a kind of bulimia. Michael married her mainly because she looks pretty.
- Andrea, Michaels girlfriend. She’s a reporter for the BBC.
Summary:
Michael Dillon, hotel manager in Belfast, is married with Moira, but their marriage isn’t doing great. The reason is that Michael has found a new girlfriend, Andrea.
When Andrea tells Michael that she has to move to London for her job, Michael decides that he has to tell Moira that he wants to get divorced. But in the night he wanted to tell her, some men from the IRA where breaking into their house.
The IRA tells Michael that he has to blew up the Clarence Hotel, the hotel he manages. If he warns the police, the IRA will kill his wife. The bomb was already in his car, and the only thing he had to do was park his car at the hotel. Before Michael leaves at his place, he and Moira saw a part of the face of one of the men.
When he parked his car at the hotel he did warn the police, so there was a chance that Moira was killed, but when he came home she was still alive.
The police thought that it was better that Michael and Moira moved out of Belfast, because they would be more safe then, but Moira really didn’t want to leave Belfast, and Michael really want to go to London for his work, and also because of Andrea, ‘cause she also had to go to London for her job. So there was a solution for it, but on the moment when Michael wants to leave Belfast, Moira gets to know about his relation with Andrea, and in her anger she gives an interview on TV about their experiences with the IRA, and that Michael maybe could identify some of the men. The police really wants to know some information, and they ask them to testify against the men. And then there’s also a priest, who has visit Michael, and he wanted Michael to don’t testify against them, because the priest isn’t only a priest, but family of one of the IRA-men too.
Michael decides not to testify, and he leaves to London with Andrea. In London the priest visited Michael again, and he really asked him not to testify against the IRA, but Michael didn’t really answer him, and so the priest thinks that Michael will testify. And so, a few days later, Michael Dillon was killed by the IRA, because he’s a danger for them.
Personal opinion:
The book has a very exciting story. I had the idea that it really happened. I had heard of the IRA before, but I didn’t knew exactly what it really was. Because of reading this book I know more about what they did, and also why they did such terrible things.
