Summary
Lord Voldemort and the Death-Eaters want to kill Harry Potter. At the beginning Harry is with his family in Little Whinging, when the Order of the Phoenix comes to get him to a safer place. With a little help of a potion six other people turn into Harry’s, so that there are seven Harry Potters! Each of them goes to a different place, to distract Voldemort and his followers. But Severus Snape told Voldemort about the list and they attack Harry. Harry´s owl Hedwig dies in the fight.
In the burrow is everyone busy preparing the wedding of Bill and Fleur. Harry tells Hermione and Ron, his two best friends, about his plan: he won’t go back to school, but will look for the Horcruxes (there are seven and they must be destroyed before Harry can kill Voldemort). Together they will leave the day after the wedding.

Before the wedding Rufus Scrimgeour, the Minister of Magic, comes and gives the Put-Outer to Ron, a mysterious book written in Runes to Hermione and the Snitch to Harry, who captured this one in his first Quidditch match at school. These objects are left behind by Dumbledore; he also left Godrics Sword behind for Harry, but Scrimgeour thinks it doesn’t belong to Harry. Harry talks with Viktor Kruml at the wedding, who tells him about the medallion of Luna’s father: the sign upon the medallion is from the evil wizard Grindelwald, which is killed by Perkamentus.
Suddenly the Death-Eaters apparate at the party: Voldemort killed Rufus Scrimgeour and has taken his place as Minister for Magic. Harry, Hermione and Ron escape and go into hiding in London in an empty pub. But almost directly the Death-Eaters find them and they go to Grimmauld Place 12, Harry’s house which he inhered from his stepfather. Harry thinks the medallion, one of the Horcruxes, is in the House, but the House-Elf Kreacher tells him it was stolen by Levenius Lorrebos. Kreacher finds Levenius and he tells Harry and his friends that Dolores Umbridge, from the Ministry, took it from him. Harry, Ron and Hermione sneak into the Ministry and see that the medallion hangs around Umbridges neck. They steal it from her in a fight and apparate back to Grimmauld Place, but Jeegers follows them en sees where they are hiding. They have to go immediately and camp at the different places with lots of spells and charms for their own safety. They don´t know how to destroy a Horcrux and wear it for the turn. It’s obvious the medallion influences the mood of the carrier. They get a row and Ron walks away.
Harry and Hermione visit Godric's Hollow, where Harry’s birth house stands. At the graveyard they find the graves of his elders. When they look at the remainders of his elderly house, a woman lures them to her house, but it is a trap: it was Voldemort. They can escape, but Harry’s wand is broken so bad, it can’t be repaired.
At one night Harry sees an unknown Partronus of a female stag: it lures him away from the tent and leads him to a pond where Godrics sword lies at the bottom. He dives, but the medallion tries to strangle him. Ron saves him just in time en destroys the medallion with the sword. In the book, that Dumbledore gave to Hermione, is a mysterious symbol: it is not a rune, but the same sign that was inscribed in the medallion of Luna’s father, Harry saw at the wedding. They decide to visit him and he tells them about a fairy tale: three brothers want to concur death. The first wishes a unbeatable wand, the Elder Wand. The second wishes the power to give life to death people and gets a ring, the Resurrection Stone and the third one wants a way to run away from the death and receives an invisibility cloak. The wand, stone and cloak together form the sign. Hermione thinks its nonsense, but Harry sees agreements in the Horcruxes and the recent events. He realised that he has already possessed the invisibility cloak for years: it was first from his father. So he believes the story and thinks the third brother is his family! He knows Dumbledore destroyed a ring with the same sign and know he understands what Voldemort is looking for so hard: the wand.
Harry, Hermione and Ron try to find more Horcruxes, but they fail. After a long time they get a fight and Harry accidentally uses Voldemorts name (there is a Taboo on it so Voldemort knows where the one who spoke the word is hiding) and the Death-Eaters apparate at once and bring them to the manor of the Malfoy´s. Hermione is being tortured and Ron and Harry are locked up in the basement, together with Ollivander, the wandmaker, Luna Lovegood and Griphook, the Goblin of Gringrotts the bank. Griphook tells Harry that there was recently something put in Bellatrix´ vault. Harry thinks it is a Horcrux. Thanks to Dobby they can escape, but in the fight Dobby dies by the wand of Bellatrix. Harry and Griphook make a deal: Griphook helps Harry to get into Gringotts to steal the Horcrux and Griphook gets the sword of Godric, because it was made by Goblins. The horcrux proves to be the cup of Helga Hufflepuf, one of the founders of Harry’s school Hogwarts. The alarm goes off, but they can escape on the back of a dragon. They don´t know how to destroy it, because they do not have the sword anymore. Harry can sometimes see what Voldemort is thinking: that’s the way they find out that there is a Horcrux at Hogwarts. They go under Harry’s invisibility cloak and Dumbledores brother indicates a secret passage to the school. In the common room of Ravenclaw Harry sees a diadem of Rowena Ravenclaw and after much thinking he remembers seeing the diadem in The Room of Requirement. In the meanwhile are Ron and Hermione in the Chamber of Secrets to get a teeth of the basilisk, which destructs the cup of Hufflepuf. In The Room of Requirement Harry finds the diadem and when three boys attack him with Fiendsfyre, a Dark Art, the diadem is accidentally destroyed. They nearly survive the Fiendsfyre, except one of the three boys.
Harry looks into Voldemorts mind again and sees he is in The Shrieking Shack with Severus Snape. Harry, Ron and Hermione see Voldemort killing Snape, because Snape has the Elder Wand and Voldemort believes that’s the way to become the legitimate owner. Voldemort leaves and Harry crawls to Snape and Snape says Harry has to capture his thought: Harry puts them in a bottle and goes back to Hogwarts, leaving a dead Snape. In the office of Dumbledore Harry empties the bottle in the Pensieve and sees that Snape has always loved his mother, Lily Potter. Because she died, Snape promised Dumbledore to look after her sun, so Snape was after all one of the good guys! He made a deal with Dumbledore, that he would kill him, because Dumbledore had the Elder Wand and Snape would be the legitimate owner. Dumbledore had only one year to live, because of the curse that protected the ring. His patronus is a female stag; the same as Lily Potter. And he finds out his scar is another Horcrux: he has to die, if he wants Voldemort death. Voldemort is in the Forbidden Forest, near Hogwarts, surrounded by his Death-Eaters. Before he walks into the forest he opens the Snitch and sees the Resurrection Stone in it. He calls his stepfather, Remus Lupin and his parents to live, but they are only a shadow. He asks if it hurts to die and they reassure him it doesn’t.
Voldemort kills Harry with the Avada Kedavra curse and thinks Harry is death, but the curse only destroyed the Horcrux in Harry: he comes in a sort of dream and Dumbledore tells him everything he needs to know. Voldemort calls everyone in Hogwarts to see the death Harry: Neville Longbottom kills the snake: Nagini, which is the last Horcrux. Molly Weasley kills Bellatrix in a fight and Voldemort almost kills Molly, but at that point Harry stands up and shows he is not death at all. Voldemort is mortal and Harry and Voldemort fire at the same time a spell; because Voldemort is not the legitimate owner of the Elder Wand, the Deathcurse backfires at himself and not Harry. Voldemort is finally dead and defeated.
The book ends with a scene in London, waiting for the Hogwarts Express. Harry and Ginny are married and have three children: Lily, James and Albus Severus. Ron and Hermione have two: Rose and Hugo. Bill and Fleur´s daughter Victoire has a relation with Teddy: the sun of Remus and Nymphadora Tonks. Neville Longbottom is teacher Herbology at Hogwarts. A happy ending.
