Summary
At the age of eighteen, Susanna Kaysen goes ‘voluntarily’ to a mental hospital. She tried to kill herself and she seems very depressed. At the hospital she gets the diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder. At the hospital she meets the other patients. Her roommate is Georgina, a girl who has schizophrenia. There is also Polly, a girl who has scars al over her body, because she once set herself on fire. Polly also has schizophrenia. And there is Daisy, a bit of a shy girl who lives for chicken. She only stays at the hospital at certain periods. Already in the first part of the book you will read that she kills herself. The person who attracts most attention is Lisa. Lisa goes her own way and doesn’t care what the others think. She escapes from the building several times. One period she loses this attitude. But not for a long time.
The book describes the way things are going in the hospital. The other patients, the staff, the rules, the way the days go by and the special things that happen.
Susanna visits a lot of doctors. She has compulsory thoughts and hurts herself. At a point she is so convinced that there are no bones in her hand, she tries to find out what there is really inside her hand. Sometimes Susanna plays games with the doctors, but she also sees that they are trying to help her. After two years, she is dismissed from the hospital. She finds a job, after seeking a long time. She married a man, but divorced later. She stays in contact with Georgina, she sees Lisa once after a couple of years. She also tries to find out what kind of disease she really had. She reads books about borderline and develops her own vision on the disease.

Susanna: Susanna Kaysen isn’t only the writer of this book; also she got the leading role. Susanna has got a personality disorder called borderline. Because of this disorder she’s behaving very strangely sometimes, sometimes she wants to cut herself in her arms; to kill something inside.
Lisa: Lisa lives on the same department as Susanna. Lisa is cheeky. Lisa tried to get out of this mental hospital, but every-time she returns, or she is found. She only thinks about herself, and that’s why she gets into fights with other patients.
Georgina: Georgina is Susanna’s roommate. Georgina is schizophrenic. She’s a good friend of Susanna, even after the residence in the mental hospital.
Polly: Polly lives on the same department as Susanna. Polly is, just like Georgina, schizophrenic. At a younger age, Polly put herself on fire. Her whole body is covered with burn marks. For her this hospital is a protection against the outer world.
Daisy: Daisy isn’t the whole year in the mental hospital, but in December and with her birthday she is. Daisy only eats chicken, and used a lot of laxatives. Daisy’s father tortured daisy, and that’s the reason why Daisy kills herself.
My reaction
I love this book; it’s absolutely one of my favourites. Maybe it’s because I like books about people, strange people, confused. Susanna Kaysen knows how to write a book full of ambiance. You know how the girls are feeling, that they know that the outer world think they are crazy. In the book you get Susanna’s opinion about the world. She didn’t speak about what she was talking about in her therapies, the ambiance talks for her. Some thoughts in this book are familiar to everybody. When you look at something and you daydream about it..? Susanna was getting sick of it, but we all know how it feels to daydream.
The book was something of a diary, day by day you get her opinion or her conversations with the other girls.

Susanna Kaysen is achttien jaar als ze in een psychiatrische inrichting terechtkomt. Ze wordt hier door de dokter heen gestuurd. De dokter zegt vrijwillig, ook al is het volgens Susanna niet geheel vrijwillig gegaan.
In de psychiatrische inrichting aangekomen wordt geconstateerd dat ze een borderline persoonlijkheidsstoornis heeft. Ook kan ze niet tegen bepaalde patronen, in een supermarkt schiet Susanna bijvoorbeeld helemaal uit haar slof, door de lange gangpaden met geblokte vloeren. In een gordijn kan ze niet zien of het nu een berglandschap, of een gordijn is. En ook als ze met de inrichting ijsjes gaan eten, kan ze niet tegen de zwart/wit betegelde vloer. Ze kon fantasie en werkelijkheid soms moeilijk uit elkaar halen. Susanna had ook problemen met gezichten van mensen, ze zag niet een hele gezicht, maar ze zag delen en ontleedde het gezicht deel voor deel. Ze zag niet het mens achter de gezichtsdelen. Ook had Susanna zelfmoordneigingen. Zo heeft ze vijftig aspirines genomen, ze ging naar buiten en viel flauw. Ze overleefde deze poging wel. Susanna wilde helemaal geen zelfmoord plegen, ze wilde een deel van haar karakter vermoorden.
In de inrichting zit ze in een groep, soms gaan er mensen weg uit de groep doordat ze niet meer ‘gek’ zijn of weglopen. Bij Susanna zitten nog wat meisjes in de groep, geen jongens. Haar kamergenoot Georgina is schizofreen. Ook zit ze in de groep met Polly, een meisje dat zichzelf in de brand stak en ook schizofreen is. Ook is er Daisy, Daisy is erg schuw en leeft vooral op kip, ze is gek op kip. Lisa is ook een meisje uit de groep, Lisa moet veel aandacht hebben en wist alles van iedereen uit het ziekenhuis. Lisa liep wel eens weg, maar kwam altijd weer terug.
De sfeer in het boek is wantrouwig. De meisjes gedroegen zich ook wantrouwig naar de zusters. Er was maar één zuster die ze vertrouwden, Valerie. Ze vertelden haar niets, maar namen dingen van haar aan. De rest van de zuster had eigenlijk weinig directe invloed op de patiënten. Elke dag moesten ze naar de psychiater, die ongeveer vijf minuten de tijd voor ieder had, van tevoren bedachten Susanna en de meisjes wat ze haar zouden gaan vertellen.
Ook was er controle, de hele dag door. Om de vijf minuten ging de deur open om te kijken of iedereen er was, en waar je mee bezig was. Als het beter met je ging, mocht het om de tien minuten, daarna om het halfuur, enzovoorts. ‘s Nachts kon er geknuffeld worden met de nachtploeg als de meisjes daar behoefte aan hadden. Overdag gold de regel: geen lichamelijk contact.
Soms beschrijft Susanna hoe ze naar de wereld keek. Haar gedachtes en de manier waarop ze dingen ziet zijn vreemd, anders. De Oosterse tapijten waren eng, de mensen die haar wilden helpen zijn absoluut niet te vertrouwen, en moeten zo weinig mogelijk met je te maken hebben. Als er nieuwe meisjes in de groep kwamen, werden die meegesleurd in het verbannen van de meeste verpleegsters. Maar ik denk dat ze ondanks dat de meiden het zelf niet doorhadden toch werden geholpen door de mensen om hen heen.
Uiteindelijk komt Susanna uit de inrichting en kan weer normaal tegen de wereld aankijken, maar in dit boek is het vooral heel veel sfeer, en geen duidelijke lijn van een verhaal. Ziet het als een dagboek vol gedachtes, redeneringen en stukjes gesprek tussen haar en de meisjes.
