Title description: Bram Stoker, Dracula. London: penguin books 1993 (1897) First reaction: I think it is a very good book. I really got involved in the story and wanted to read the book out at once. I don't have that often whit English books, only when I think they are well wrote. This was one of those books. Yes, the expectations came true. I thought it would be a book about Count Dracula, a vampire that is believed to live in the 19th century and the book was about him. I also thought it would be a creepy novel and I was right. I do not recognize any of the characters in this book. This book does make me think of another book I have read. That book is called "bloed en chocolade" and it is about a girl who is a werewolf. I don't know why it does, but it does. Perhaps because that book is kind of creepy too. I would like to read other books written by this author, because I really liked this book a lot and I think I would like his other books also. Genre: I think the book is a horror book, because it is about a vampire and scary. It takes place in the 19th century, but I don't think it really is a historical novel, because the author doesn't mention many details from that time. He wrote the book at the end of the 19th century and that is the reason it takes place in that time.
Summary: Count Dracula is a vampire and lives in Transylvania, but he decides to move to London, because there are more people. He buys some houses in London and a lawyer; Jonathan Harker comes to his castle in Transylvania to settle the business. When Jonathan is in the castle he finds himself captured by the count, but he escapes to a nunnery where the nuns take care of him and call for his fiancée, Mina Murray. They marry in the nunnery. At the time they come back in England the count has already made his first victim: Lucy Westenra. He kills her and her friends are very sad. Then Mina becomes ill. Jack doesn't know what is wrong whit her, so he calls for his friend and mentor, Dr von Helsing. He comes and says that she has troubles because of a vampire. He also says that Lucy was one of his victims and that she is a vampire too. The others don't believe him, but when he takes them to her tomb and they see for themselves they do believe him. They kill her again and she is buried again. This time as a human. Then the friends decide that they won't let Dracula go ahead. They will try to destroy him. At first they starting looking for the boxes whit earth Dracula brought with him when he came to England. They find them and sprain them with holy water. Now the count can't go to rest during the day anymore and they will be able to destroy him in order to save the people from London of this vampire. They track him around al of England and he almost looses them, but they keep hold of his track and find him. One of the men kills Dracula by putting a knife in his body. His face gets a peaceful expression and then Dracula turns into dust. That is were the story ends. Period of time and place: At first the story takes place in Transylvania, but later it moves to England. I don't know the exact time, but it begins on the third of May in the late 19th century. It ends the same year on November the 6th. Main character(s): The main characters are: Count Dracula, Jonathan Harker, Mina Murray, Lucy Westenra, Arthur Holmwood, Quincy Morris, Dr. Jake Seward and Dr. Abraham von Helsing. Count Dracula is a vampire who lives in Transylvania. He wants to move to London to find new blood in that city of millions. When he was alive he was a knight who fought the Turks. When his beloved heard he died she committed suicide. After that the count turned away from the church and became a vampire. That was several hundred years before the story takes place. Jonathan Harker: he is a young lawyer who is engaged whit Mina Murray, and later he marries her. When the story begins he is very self-confident and going to Transylvania. When he is coming closer to his destiny his self-confidence weakens. Mina Murray: she becomes the wife of Jonathan and so her name changes into Mina Harker. She is a young schoolmistress. All she wants is to be a good wife to Jonathan. Lucy Westenra: she is a childhood friend of Mina and a noblewoman. She is adored by Arthur, Quincy and Jack, but doesn't know who to chose. She marries Arthur, but soon after that she becomes a vampire and dies. Arthur Holmwood: he becomes lord Godalming and uses his title to get things done and information. He is a friend of Quincy and of Jake. All he wants is revenge after the dead of Lucy. Quincy Morris: he is a rich Texan and he always carries a big knife around. He is a friend of Jake and Arthur. He wants also revenge for the dead of Lucy. Dr Jake Seward: he is a young doctor. Despite his age already already in charge of a lunatic asylum. He adores Lucy and when she gets killed all he wants is revenge. Dr Abraham von Helsing: he is a Dutch doctor and a friend and mentor of Jack. His knowledge about vampires is of good help during their battle against him. Writers intention (theme): The intention of the writer is make people aware of vampires, when he has a intention. But I really doubt about that. I think he just wanted to write a book about vampires and that was all. Title: The book has the same name as one of the main characters: Dracula. The book is named after him. In the book he is called count Dracula. Personal opinion: I liked the book very much, because it was easy to read, but it kept my attention. I didn't think of many other things when I read this book. The book didn't really teach me anything, but that wasn't the reason I chose it, so that doesn't bother. I would really recommend this book to anyone who likes horror stories.
