Summery (Samenvatting)

The main character Beatrice Prior, lives in the future Chicago, in Abnegation, one of the five factions. The other four are Dauntless, Erudite, Candor and Amity. Dauntless is for the brave, Candor for the honest, Erudite for the smart, Amity for the peaceful and Abnegation for the selfless.  Every year all the 16 year old from every faction have to do a test. The result of the test will help them decide for which faction they will choose. Beatrice chose for Dauntless, what is weird for someone who comes from Abnegation, a very peaceful faction and Dauntless is wild, strong and they live very dangerously. Everyone is surprised and not everyone respects her choice. She and the other aspirants were brought to the base camp of Dauntless where they get to hear that they have to do another test! Only the half of the group will be a Dauntless…The test exists of three parts and is very hard. She is getting bullied by Peter, Drew and Molly but she gets supported and defended by her new friends, Christina, Al and Will. In part three of the test they are only with the three of them because Al commits suicide because he tried to push Tris from the bridge and she never forgave him. On the end of stage three of the test someone comes to her and says that she must drink a serum. She doesn’t really trust it but everybody else already took it, so she does too. Then the final results come on the screen. Tris is first! Then they are going to sleep. In the middle of the night everyone gets up. They are sleepwalking but their eyes are open. Now Tris understands the serum. The Dauntless will be the army for Erudite against Abnegation because Erudite always was jealous on Abnegation. They jump on the train and Tris is copying the behaviour. Then she sees that Tobias is awake too! Eric tries to shoot Tobias and that’s the point they show they aren’t sleepwalking. Tobias and Tris attack and run, but Tris is shot. Tobias and Tris have to go to Jeanine. She is the one who wants all the Divergents dead. She has a new serum which works on Tobias and she gives it to him. He goes to the computers who control all this, under control of the serum. Tris is going to be executed. But Tris’ mother saves her. Tris mother dies when she helped Tris to escape. Tris has to shoot Will to escape. She goes to a bunker where her father, brother, Marcus and some Abnegation people are. They have to stop the erudite. Tris knows how, they have to go to the pit and the control chamber where Tobias is. They go the way she took the first time she went to Dauntless headquarters. When they are there she discovers that Peter is awake and shoots him in his hand. He says he would help her if he could stay with Marcus and her brother. Tobias is still in the power of Janine and tries to kill her. She can’t hurt him and gives him the gun to shoot her. He wakes up and they remove the software. Tris, Tobias, Caleb and Marcus, Tobias’ dad are going to Amity for help.

Later, when she is in Dauntless she is not shy at all and she even takes a tattoo of three ravens what stands for her parents and brother.

"Moths," repeats Will. "You're afraid of moths?"

"Terrifying," Will says with mock seriousness. "That's my girl. Tough as cotton balls."

"Oh, shut up."
