Bridget Jones is 33. She lives in London and she’s an open, complaining and chubby single. She’s looking for the perfect man but always falls for the wrong guy, who dumps her after 2 dates. After several brief relationships with worthless men, she decides to keep a diary. She uses it to release all her anger and frustrations and to write down all her feelings and her efforts to lose weight. The diary is the thread through the story.
The story starts on January the 1st, Bridget is making some New Year’s Resolutions like ‘stop smoking’ and ‘be more assertive’. The rest of the book is divided into 12 parts, each telling the incidents that happened in one month.
When Bridget cooks, it’s always a fiasco. She doesn’t follow the recipe and uses wrong tools like blue cord instead of tenuous thread. She likes to throw parties where she tries to make a four-course dinner. It always ends up in a restaurant or Bridget ordering a pizza.
Bridget’s parents are also having a crisis. Her mother suddenly wants to divorce and start to live a free life. Her father is a bit of a wretch, he totally depends on his wife and is very depressed now she’s gone. Bridget doesn’t really bothers about separation because she thinks it will pass. Her mother, who desperately wants a young boyfriend, a career and some cool friends, always invites Bridget to one of her friend’s ‘Turkey Curry Buffet’ or ‘Tarts and Vicars party’. Bridget hates this kind of parties because everyone is married, happy and curious about Bridget’s love life (most of the time not existing).
Marc Darcy, the son of Malcolm and Elaine Darcy, is THE perfect partner for Bridget according to her mother. He’s rich, lawyer and adorable! The only problem is that Bridget can’t stand his arrogance and she feels like a dumbo in his neighborhood. But in obscure situations Marc Darcy is the one who helps Bridget, maybe he isn’t that arrogant and really the one…
A long time ago, I saw the movie about Bridget Jones. I heard a lot about it and most of the people were very positive about the story. I looked forward to see it but it was a real anticlimax. I think Bridget’s just a sad person.
In most situations, the book is better than the screening. I was really hoping it would be true in this case but it doesn’t. Except for one or two hilarious parts, I didn’t like to read it. It wasn’t hard but they repeat a lot and there are parts in the book where Helen Fielding just writes something to fill up the book. I hope I’m not going to become a Bridget Jones and I also know I’m never going to start writing a diary because it’s just not interesting!
