1)Book Genre:
- Animal Farm is a satirical novel because this story is actually revering to the Russian revolution of 1917 but because they use animals in this story the writer makes it funny.
- Example 1: After that Manor farm was conquered by the animals the pigs named themselves the leaders of the farm. Just like Vladimir Lenin named himself and the Bolshevik party the leaders of Russia.
- Example 2: In the book the animals call each other comrades just like they did in the Russian revolution.
2)Characters
- Napoleon, Napoleon is the rude leader who abuses the rest and the power that his intelligence gives him. Napoleon turns out to be a rather heartless leader who cleverly makes the animals believe that he wants the best for them. Napoleon is said to be a representation of Joseph Stalin in this book. He leads the farm after The Old Major (which stands for Lenin or Karl Marx) is no longer there.
- The Old Major,
Old Major was the oldest pig of the farm and was seen as the leader before the revolution. The Old Major was the wisest animal on the farm and was also the animal who started talking about a revolution. He talked and all animals listened to his wisdom. Old Major died before the revolution started and you could see him representing Karl Marx or Lenin in this book. - Snowball,
When the Revolution started Snowball was seen as one of the leaders. Snowball always did what was best for the farm and the animals, but was always against Napoleons ideas. Napoleon saw Snowball as a rival and put him out of play. Snowball symbolises one of Stalins rivals Leon Trotsky.
3)Location/Time
a) The Sovjet Union / Russia
b) "Comrade," said Snowball, "those ribbons that you are so devoted to are the badge of slavery. Can you not understand that liberty is worth more than ribbons?"
They keep calling each other comrades and that was a term used frequently in the Sovjet Union.
c) 1917 The Russian Revolution
d) The whole book is about the Russian revolution the reason I think this is because the red thread of the stories look a lot alike and the personas have the same job and the same problems as in the Russian revolution.
4)Summary
Just before Old Major dies he invited all the farm animals to the big farm. He talks about that the animals are being suppressed by humans and tries to encourage them to start an rebellion. The words of Old Major made thing clearer for some of the animals to see that they are a slave of the farmer.
Not long after the farm staff forgot to feed the animals. The animals saw this as a chance to start the revolution, with their Snowball, Napoleon and Squeler leading the way. The revolution had started, the 7 commandments are set up and the animals were starting to run the farm themselves. The humans tried to reclaim the farm twice but were stopped both times by the animals.
Animal Farm is doing well for a while. The farm is attacked a few times by the people trying to regain power, and two of the pigs (Snowball and Napoleon) are fighting for power. Napoleon took a number of puppies under his wing and when there are ever-increasing conflicts between Snowball and Napoleon, Snowball is chased away by Napoleon's dogs.
Napoleon becomes the only ruler of Animal farm. Napoleon starts to change the seven commandments so that he can sleep in the house, drink alcohol and eventually walk on two legs. Slowly but surely there is a growing gap between the more intelligent animals and the less intelligent animals. For example the less intelligent animals do not realise that the pigs add conditions to the seven commandments, which work in their favour. Animal farm is starting to look more and more like a dictatorship in which the less intelligent animals work for the more intelligent animals, just like they did for the humans. The pigs are starting to behave more and more like humans. At one point they even started walking on two legs, while the first rule of Animalism was that everything on two legs was the enemy. That change really becomes clear the moment Napoleon lets "traitors" being slaughtered by his dogs. The animals have to work harder and longer, get less and less food and the pigs and the dogs start to live wealthier.
The whole purpose of the revolution has failed. The less intelligent animals are even worse off under the pig regime than when they were among humans. Further the pigs make peace with the people, something that was unacceptable to the original rules of Animalism. At the end Napoleon turns all seven commandments into one commandment: all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others. Short after he invites other farmers to come and look around the farm. When the other animals were standing outside in the cold looking trough the window. They can no longer see a difference between the pigs and the people.
