Summary
The book ‘about a boy’ is about a boy Marcus, an introverted and bullied twelve-year-old who lives alone with his mother Fiona, and Will, a 36-year-old single man. Thanks to the royalties from his father’s hit Christmas song, Will has never had to work. This means that he has a lot of spare time, which he spends watching television, smoking, listening to music and looking for female camaraderie.
After a nice relationship with Angie, a single mother, Will decides to attend a single parents group. He thinks that’s the easiest way to pick up single mothers. For this purpose, he makes up a two-year-old son named Ned.
Though one of these single parents meetings, Will comes to know Marcus. At first, their relationship is a little bit strange, but they finally succeed in building up a true friendship. Will is the one who helps Marcus to fit into the modern world by taking him shopping and buying him new shoes. As the story progresses, Marcus and Will’s friendship blooms.
In the meantime Will starts going out with Rachel, a single mother with a child who has the same age as Marcus. Marcus and Will both have started to live according to their age.
At the end, Marcus isn’t as shy as he used to be and learns to stand up for himself, while Will finally grows up and wants to marry Rachel.
