Part 1 - Dorothy
Dorothy Kingschip is having an affair with Bud Corliss. Much to Bud's anger, she gets pregnant, so his plans with her can't go ahead at all. Bud is originally very poor and he wants to marry Dorothy because she comes from a rich family.
When Bud learns that Dorothy is pregnant, she gets some pills from him. These pills should ensure that Dorothy will have a miscarriage. However, the pills don't work and Bud has a problem: in the meantime she loves him so much that she wants to marry him. Bud has already found out that if they get married he will never get money from Dorothy's father, so he is determined to end the relationship.
At some point he gives her pills that must make it look like she committed suicide. Bud has planned the case so that he even sends a farewell letter to Ellen, Dorothy's sister. But she doesn't take these pills, so she doesn't die. The day of the wedding is getting closer and closer and Bud starts to get stuffy. Eventually he throws Dorothy off the roof of the town hall, causing her to die from the fall. The police then think Dorothy committed suicide.
Part 2- Ellen
Ellen doesn't believe her sister committed suicide and suspects she was murdered. She and Dean go to college to find out who Dorothy's boyfriend could have been. She knew Dorothy had a boyfriend, but she never knew who that boyfriend was. In the end, she ends up with two names: Gordon Gant and Dwight Powell.
Ellen immediately contacts Gordon Gant and together they meet. However, he gives her no reason to suspect him of a murder case. When Gordon and Ellen then go to a hotel room together and he finds a letter addressed to Bud, he suddenly realizes why Ellen has contacted him: Ellen suspects that he has murdered her sister.
Then Ellen meets Dwight Powell as well. She now suspects that he murdered her sister. She's taking him to the place where Dorothy fell off. He tells her he knows a girl he knew fell off of there. For the rest, he won't let anything go.
Later he tells her that Dorothy was having an affair with Bud. Bud hears this conversation and then shoots Dwight out of anger.
Bud then comes with the story that he heard Dwight and her talking and that he was afraid that Dwight wanted to kill her.
Then Bud takes her to a place where they are alone. Here he tells her that he killed Dorothy and then he shoots Ellen as well.
Part 3 - Marion
Then Bud contacts Marion: Dorothy and Ellen's sister. He says that he was a friend of Ellen's and that he still has a book of hers. After this they start to like each other and build a relationship.
Gordon Gant then contacts Marion's father. He says he doesn't trust anything and that he suspects that Bud killed both Dorothy and Ellen. Since Bud has been in the family for a long time now, Mr Kingship still trusts everything. He thinks Gordon Gant should come up with hard evidence, because Bud and Marion already have wedding plans.
Eventually Gordon Gant comes with hard evidence and Mr. Kingship can't get around it. Mr. Kingship is going to talk to Marion and the three of them come up with a plan.
Bud is taken by plane to Mr Kingship's factory. Then Mr. Kingship shows his factory. When Bud is standing on a staircase above a barrel of hot cloth he is asked if he is the killer of Ellen and Dorothy. He denies everything. Eventually, he falls into the barrel of hot fabric and dies.
