Good morning everyone, I’m going to tell you something about the history of Ferrari.
First I’m going to tell something about the founder of Ferrari, called Enzo Ferrari.
Then I’m going to tell you something about the brand Ferrari. And than I’m going to tell you something about the cooperation with Pininfarina.
Enzo Ferrari was born in a small town in Italy, called Modena, one of the cars today has been given the honor of carrying that name. Enzo was born there on the 18th of februari 1898.
Enzo Ferrari started his career as a mechanic at Alfa Romeo. In the year 1923 Alfa Romeo offered him the opportunity to become test-driver for the Alfa Romeo racing team. Enzo was not very successful as a race car driver so he was made responsible for the organization and technical problems of the racing team.
It was after World War 2, in 1947, Enzo Ferrari asked his old friend and engineer Colombo to work with him developing a new racing car. Colombo constructed the legendary Ferrari V12 engine with two overhead camshafts. This engine saw his debut in the Ferrari 166. That was the first 'true' Ferrari single seater. After this car, Ferrari soon gained a reputation for reliability.
As I have just told you the history of Enzo Ferrari and the beginning of his enterprise, I will now tell you about the brand of Ferrari. The first true Ferrari was the 166. The year 1952 was the start of the second phase in Ferrari history. Many new Ferrari´s saw the light of day. Also the first Ferrari won the Mille Miglia street race and after that success of Ferrari was a fact.
Ferrari is also still the brand that has more victories in Le Mans than any other team in the world.
After all those victories, Ferrari has been starting the production of streetcar-versions of their race cars. Ferrari is the only brand where the race cars and regular street models are so equally challenged. For example the Testarossa and the F40.
In 1988 Enzo Ferrari died. Also in 1988, the Fiat company increased its share by 40%, making it 90%.
Every year there will be 4.000 cars produced, which allows the exclusiveness for each and every one of them, as Enzo specifically desired.
When we talk about Ferrari, we talk about Pininfarina. Those two are the best known names in the automobile world. Pininfarina is a designer of cars. Since 1952 both names are united in a single product, Ferrari produces the cars, and Pininfarina designs the cars. This combination forms the top in the world of exclusive sport cars.
Battista "Pinin" Farina was born in 1893 and founded his own Company in 1930.
Until the 40s Pininfarina concentrated on the design and construction of special car bodies, with innovative styling and technical features for individual customers. Pininfarina started a cooperation with Alfa Romea and Lancia.
In the sixties the cooperation with various car makers starts, (Peugeot, Fiat, Lancia and off course Ferrari).
