Eduardo Mondlane’s statue depicts him as a strong, young leader paving the way to the future he points towards. Once renowned as Mozambique’s greatest symbol of hope and renewal, Mondlane now points only to a country in dismay; to the barricaded wealth of the government, to Mozambique’s “Povo” trapped in the shadows of lives they never inherited. The statue creates a symbolic border between the two sides Mondlane hoped to unite, amid the inequality he sought to eradicate. Despite all Mozambique gave for independence, its people now seek asylum far from hopes fractured by rigged elections, police violence, and corruption.
