Tracy Turnblad is a fat girl who loves to dance. She has big hair.
Link Larkin is the boyfriend of Amber. He falls in love with Tracy.
Penny Pingleton is the best friend of Tracy.
Edna Turnblad is the mother of Tracy.
Wilbur Turnblad is the father of Tracy.
Velma von Tussle is the producer of the Corny Collins show. She is racist.
Amber von Tussle is the daughter of Velma and dances in the Corny Collins show.
Corny Collins is the presenter of the Corny Collins show. He isn’t racist.
Motormouth Maybelle is the presenter of Negro Day and she has a recordshop.
Summary:
It’s the 3th of May 1962 and Tracy goes to school. After school she watches the Corny Collins show together with her best friend Penny. Some teenagers from their school dance in the show. Tracy is a big fan of Link. All the teenagers in the show are white. Once a month is Negro Day, that’s for the black people. Tracy’s and Penny’s mother aren’t happy their daugthers watch the show.
A dancer of the show is pregnant and they are searching for someone who can takes her place for a while. Tracy is going to do audition but she failed because Velma finds her too fat. She played truant for the audition and has punishment. During the punishment she meets some black teenagers and she dances with them. Link sees that and invites her to dance on his performance. There she gets a role to dance in the Corny Collins show. She becomes one of the most popular dancers of the show. Amber is scared that Tracy will win on the Miss teenage hairspray contest. Link begins to like her. Penny meets Seawood, one of the black boys, and they fall in love. Than Tracy has punishment again and Link goes with her. Tracy, Link and Penny are invited for a party of his mother Mothermouth Maybelle. There they hear that Negro day is abandoned by Velma. They are going to protest, but Link goes not with them because he thinks his career will be in danger. During the protest the police arrests them all but Tracy goes on the run. The police is looking for her. She hides in the cellar of Penny’s house. Actually Penny's mother has closed the door. During this Link changes his mind and knows for sure he is in love with Tracy. They go to the Corny Collins show and join the dancers. Velma is cheating with the votes of the contest, because she wants her daughter to win. But Little Inez, the daughter of Mothermouth Maybelle and sister of Seawood, wins the contest. Now after all a black girl wins and isn’t there a separation between black and white people anymore.
My opinion: I think it’s a nice movie. I like the songs which are in the movie. It has a clear story and message. I love the way people lived in the sixties.
I learned it doesn’t matter you are black, white, fat or thin. Everyone has to get the same opportunities!
