Stanley Yelnats is under a curse. A curse that began with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing great-great-grandfather and has since followed generations of Yelnatses. Now Stanley has been unjustly sent to a boys' detention center, Camp Green Lake, where the boys build character by spending all day, every day, digging holes exactly five feet wide and five feet deep. There is no lake at Camp Green Lake. But there are a awful lot of holes.

It doesn't take long for Stanley to realize that Camp Green Lake isn't what it seems. Are the boys digging holes because the Warden is looking for something? But what could be buried under a dried-up lake? It's up to Stanley to dig up to truth.

Meer informatie

The story
What is the title of the story and who wrote it?
The book is called Holes and is written by Louis Sachar.

The background of the story
Can you find out from the story where and when it takes place?
You only know where it takes place, because that's basically the plot for the story. It mostly takes place in Green Lake, Texas. When it takes place isn't really mentioned.
Can you also give me some information about the story's characters?
This story has a lot of characters but they aren't written about as much as the protagonist, Stanley Yelnats, so you don't know a lot about them.
Is the background important to the story?
Yes, because 90% of the story takes place there and the story is about how horrible it is there and what kind of weird things happen at Camp Green Lake.

The genre of the story
What sort of story do you feel it is? Is it, for example, a romance, a war novel, an adventure story, a whodunnit, horror, science fiction?
I think it's an adventure novel, because the story is about how Stanley wants to break out of jail/camp and also because there is supposed to be a hidden treasure everyone is looking for.
- Do you think the story is realistic?
I guess it kind of is but I don't think that it's allowed in America for 13 year olds to go to jail.

The characters
Who are the most important characters in the story? Describe no more than three of them.
Only two characters are important in this story and the other characters don't do much. Stanley Yelnats is a boy who always seems to have bad luck. Stanley gets shoes thrown at him and catches them. For some reason he starts to run, making people think he stole the shoes. He ends up in some kind of jail/camp where he has to dig holes all day. There is also Zero, the one who stole the shoes and threw them at Stanley. He also had to go to Camp Green Lake and he became friends with Stanley. Zero is actually pretty smart, even though he can't read.

Is there a character in the story you would like to get to know better if possible? Why?
Stanley probably, hes actually really nice unlike the others.
Is there a character you would prefer not to meet? Why not?
X-Ray, he is kind of an antagonist and really mean to Stanley.

A summary of the story's events
Take another look at the beginning and the end of the story. Describe what happens in between.
Stanly has to go to Camp Green Lake because of the shoes he "stole" those shoes. At Camp Green Lake, Stanley has to dig holes everyday in the burning sun. They don't really know the reason for that. The reason for the hole digging is that there is a treasure hidden in the ground somewhere. They just don't know where. Stanley becomes friends with Zero, who he teaches writing and reading. After a while, Zero walks away from the camp. Stanley later goes after him to save him because there isn't any water where he went to. Later he finds Zero who kept himself alive by eating old plums under a boat. They travel together and end up finding an oasis. Stanley thinks he knows where the treasure is hidden. At night they sneak back into the camp, but the one of the leaders found out. Then Stanley's lawyer happens to come there just in time to tell him that he's done and he can go home.

The title
What does the title of the story refer to?
Holes refers to all those holes the children at the camp had to dig in the sand at Camp Green Lake.

Do you feel the title was well-chosen or would you have chosen another title?
Yes, it's basically all the story was about.

Your personal opinion
Did you enjoy reading the story? What did you like about it? What did you find less enjoyable?
The story was okay, I liked how it was different, but it also was very confusing because you didn't really what was and was not a flashback.
Have you ever read another story that you can compare to this one?
I haven't, this is a pretty unique story.
Explain why you would recommend the story or advise someone against reading it.
I probably wouldn't recommend it, because there isn't that much happening in the story, and the characters are written in a way you don't know how they feel.
Did you learn anything from the story that you didn't already know?
Not really.
Do you think the story is written just for entertaintment or did the writer have other purposes in mind?
I think it was just for entertaintment, I don't think a boy going to jail and having to dig holes in the hot sun for stolen shoes is something that would happen.
