Title

Explanation :

Explain the title of the book.

What does it refer to?

‘My Sister’s Keeper’, the title of the book, refers to two things. It first refers to Anna, who is the ‘keeper’ (protector) of Kate, because Anna keeps Kate alive; she donates lots of stem cells and other things from her body to Kate.
It also means something else. After the accident and the death of Anna, Kate gets a kidney from Anna, what keeps Kate alive. Kate will always have something from Anna in her, so that makes Kate a keeper of Anna’s existence.

Genre:

This book belongs to the genreof:

Tragedy.

These are the characteristics of the genre:

I found it hard to decide the theme of the story. It didn’t really fit any of the themes. Maybe tragedy most, though it’s not really a tragedy.
But the characteristics are:

1. Deals with serious subjects,
2. A number of well-developed characters,
3. Has a dramatic end.

They’re all kind of true. The second one is not completely true, because Anna isn’t really well-developed, but Sara, Brian and the judges all are. Cancer is a serious object and Anna dies in the end of the book, so that is dramatic.
That’s why I choose for tragedy.

Location:

Where is the story set?

Is it important to know where it all happens in order to understand the story?

Why (not)?

The story is set in a town somewhere in Rhode Island.
It’s not really important to know where it happens. The only thing important about it, is that it has to be somewhere in this world, which has the same rules and the same lawsuit things as the state of Rhode Island. But besides that, it can be set anywhere.

Time :

When is the story set?

- Is it important to know in which period the story is set to understand what happens in the book? Why (not)?

- Is the story told in chronological order or are there flashbacks or big intervals in the story ? Explain.

The story is set not too long ago. There are mobile phones, computers, internet etc.
Also, the technologies about cancer and stem cells are pretty up to date.

Above all, it’s even more easy for me to say when the story is set.
Above the chapters of the character Sara, there’s always a year. The earliest one is 1990 and the latest one is 2010, when Kate says she hasn’t collapsed in 8 years.

Who are the main and secondary characters and explain why.

Main

characters:

The weird thing about this book is, is that there are a lot of main characters.
The book has a lot of chapters, all from the I-perspective, but with different I’s. So sometimes you have Anna, then Sara, Brian, Jesse, Julia and Campbell the lawyer.

So you get to know them all very good. They’re all main characters; you get to know their feelings and what they’re thinking etc.

Secondary characters:

Although you have a lot of main characters, there are some secondary characters.

The nurses, the doctors of oncology, dr. Chance who’s the main doctor for Kate, the secretary of Campbell, some friends of Jesse, judge DeSalvo and Julias sister Isobel.
And last but not least, is Kate. This seems weird, because Kate is the most important person in the whole story! If she wasn’t ill, the family would be a normal family and Anna wouldn’t even exist! But you don’t get to know her feelings, or her thinking. Only in the last chapter, but that’s so short, that you can’t really call her a main character.

2.

            A.        Describe the plot of the story in 10 -12 steps

1. Anna goes to mr. Campbell for the first time. She wants the rights to her own body. She tells him that her parents got her to save Kate.

2. Sara and Brian get the envelope, that says that they’re being sued.

3. Sara is a lawyer and will ‘compete’ with mr. Campbell. Sara thinks that Anna is sueing her because she wants attention.

4. Anna gets a guardian ad litem, Julia, who has had a relationship with mr. Campbell in the past. Brian decides that Anna will live with the firefighters for a while, because she needs some distance from her mom.

5. Anna is starting to doubt about her decision. Julia and Campbell start a relationship again. Julia finds out that Campbell broke up with her, because he has some kind of epilepsy and didn’t want her to live with that.

6. Brian finds out that Jesse started a lot of fires in the neighborhood, while Brian is a firefighter. He also finds out that Jesse uses drugs. Jesse says that he feels guilty he can’t save Kate.

7. Throughout the book, we go back in time in Saras chapters. She realizes that she spent not enough time with her other children, not giving them enough attention. Everything she did, was for Kate.
She is frustrated by all the actions of Anna, but she never hates her or stops loving her.

8. We’re in court. Everyone finds out that Anna was doing all this things, because Kate told her to. Kate doesn’t want to live anymore, she’s okay with it. She told Anna to find a lawyer and

9. Anna wins, she has the rights to her own body. Everyone is okay with Anna, no one is angry at her.

10. Anna gets in the car with mr. Campbell. The hospital is their destination. But they end up in a car accident. Anna has some serious brain damage; she is actually brain dead.
Mr. Campbell decides for her, which was registered, that her kidney will go to Kate.

11. Kate tells the reader that she has been healthy the past 8 years; since Anna died. She’s now a dance instructor, and thinks about Anna, every time she sees two girls doing plies, because Anna and Kate used to do that.
Furthermore, Brian overcame his alcoholism, Jesse became a firefighter, her mother went through an enormous grieving and mr. Campbell and Julia married.

3.         From whose perspective(s) do we get the story?

Explain your answer by referring to the story.

This is an interesting question for this book. Like I said before, there are different I-persons. So the story is told from the I-perspective.
But you have Sara, Anna, Brian, Jesse, Julia and Campbell as I’s. And Kate is the I in the last chapter.

Sara: “She tries to smile, tries so damn hard. ‘It was a good one, Mom, wasn’t it?’ I bite my lip, feel the heaviness of tears. ‘It was the best,’ I answer.”

Anna: “But when Kate rolled over, she was smiling. ‘It doesn’t hurt. It feels great.’ My parents looked at each other. Neither of them understood like I did, like Jesse did - …”

Brian: “When I look into Sara’s eyes, I see Jesse – they have the same coloring, the same features. I wonder if Sara looks at me and thinks of Kate. I wonder if that hurts.”

Jesse: “My father looked right at me, but he didn’t answer. And his eyes were dazed and staring through me, like I was made out of smoke. That was the first time I thought that maybe I was.”

Julia: “Once, during the night Campbell and I spent together, I woke up in his arms, to find him still sleeping.”

Campbell: “I walk Anna out of the lobby to find her father – but Brian’s gone. Sara looks around, surprised.”

4.         Theme

  1.   Choose the 2 most important themes dealt with in the novel.

Dilemma and family.

  1.  Give examples of how each theme is presented in the novel and what the writer wants to make clear about it.

Maybe ‘dilemma’ sounds a bit weird, but let me clarify. The front of the book says: ‘The only way to save your daughter, is to sacrifice her sister. What would you do?’

She wants to make clear that it’s a very hard choice. You want to do everything you can to let your first child live an amazing life. But if she’s sick, what would you do? No treatment will work, only sacrificing her sister will. She wants to make clear that Sara and Brian aren’t the bad guys in the book. Things are very complicated, but she stills wants us to know that every person on this world, has it’s own opinion. You can’t force someone.

And also is it for mr. Campbell a dilemma to break up with Julia, when he knows he has some kind of epilepsy. He doesn’t want to lose her, but he doesn’t want her to live a limited life, because of him.

Another theme is family. Sara never stops loving Anna or never hates her. Anna fixes things for Kate, because she loves her. Brian forgives Jesse for starting so many fires.

They’re a family, and though they’re not a normal family, they still love each other and that’s really important. She wants to make clear that family is important, will always be there for you, will always stay with you, if they’re alive or not.

  1.   Explain how the themes relate to the main characters.

                   (Use at least 150 words)

Well, the themes are easy to relate to the main characters.

Anna has a dilemma to keep her promise to Kate, to stop donating to Kate, which indirectly kills her. She also doesn’t want to disappoint her parents, so it’s hard for her.

Anna has a dilemma to keep her promise to Kate, to stop donating to Kate, which indirectly kills her. She also doesn’t want to disappoint her parents, so it’s hard for her.

Sara has a dilemma. She loves Kate so much and doesn’t want to lose her. But she can’t force Anna to donate.

Jesse wants to help Anna with his court thing, but also doesn’t want to lose Kate.

Brian also doesn’t want to lose Kate, but sees where Anna is coming from. He decides to put her with the firefighters for a few days, just to let her breath and be away from her mom for a while.

Anna, Kate, Jesse, Brian en Sara are a family. Julia and mr. Campbell get sucked into this family.

Of course, it’s very important that Anna and Kate are family, other wise Anna couldn’t be a donor for Kate.

Family will always support each other, so also this family.

Anna and Jesse ‘support’ Kates plan. Brian supports Sara when she thinks about having another kid.

So that’s how the theme family relates to the main characters.

Today we’re standing in front of the office of lawyer Campbell. Anna Fitzgerald is sueing her parents, Sara and Brian Fitzgerald, for medical emancipation.

Anna’s sister Kate has acute promyelocytic leukemia. This is a rare form of leukemia, which affects the blood and bone marrow. There is no real treatment for it, except chemo.
But there is one other treatment: stem cells and other donations from someone with the exact same DNA and chromosomes. Kates brother, Jesse, wasn’t a match and so was no one else in the family.

Sara and Brian Fitzgerald, decided to get another child, who would have the same DNA and chromosomes as Kate. This has all been done with medical help, to get the right child.

This is Anna. Since she was born, she has gone through a lot of operations. Kates still sick and now Anna needs to donate a kidney to her sister.

She didn’t agree with this, and went to mr. Campbell to sue her parents for medical emancipation.

Next week is going to be decided if Anna will getting ‘the rights to my own body’, like she says.

Dear Diary,

Today was such a shock. I still can’t believe it. We were in the hospital, Anna, Kate and me, when Vern dropped by. You know, our sheriff friend.

He gave me an envelope, which said that I’m being sued. Sued? For what? I already had a horrible feeling about this envelope. But I continue reading.

At that moment, the world paused. Anna has sued me: she wants medical emancipation. My head was completely empty, but also full to the brim. I wanted to hit her, wanted to talk to her but also never look at her again. I was counting to ten, just to remain calm, while I asked Anna what the hell was happening. She shook her head. I took a step closer and I was ready to explode.

But then, Kate cried out. She was in pain and wanted a nurse. I was looking at Kate, and back at Anna. I had to talk to Anna, make sure that this was all a mistake, that she would get her attention, because that’s why she sued me. But I couldn’t leave Kate another moment in this pain. At that moment, Anna ran away. I decided that I would talk to her later, so I pressed the nurse’s call button.
