Harry Potter and the deathly hallows – J.K. Rowling

1. Title-explanation

The book is about a boy, named Harry Potter. Deathly hallows means (literally translated) “Relieken van de dood”. In this final part of the Harry Potter-books Harry will search the hallows of the bad person in the story. This bad person put a part of his soul (1/7 part) in an object, for example in a ring or in other personally objects so he will live forever.

2. Summary

At the beginning, the main person (Harry Potter) turns 17 in a few days. When you turn 17, it means in his world that he can use magic every moment. He likes that, but it also means that his magical protection of his mum goes away. That means he’s in serious danger, because the most horrible person in his world wants to kill him. To not let that happen, Harry has to search the deathly hallows (the 7 objects which all have a little bit of Voldemort’s soul in it).

Harry makes plans to go as soon as he can, to search those hallows. Hermione and Ron want to come with him, because they’re his best friends. As soon as they found a hallow, Ron and Harry get in a row and Ron leaves. Hermione and Harry miss him a lot, but one day Ron turns back to the place Hermione and Harry are too. Everything’s okay and they destroy the first (actually second, because the main teacher of Harry already destroyed one) hallow.

Their searching brings up a lot of trouble, but at the end everything’s allright. Harry destroyed all the hallows and he’s having a lot of pain, but Voldemort dies.

The next paragraph is about Harry’s future life. He married Ginny, who is Ron’s sister, and got 3 kids: Albus, Lily and James. That paragraph takes place when his first kid is 11 and is allowed to go to Hogwarts, the wizard school where Harry, Ginny, Hermione and Ron went to too. So, a happy ending.

3. Theme

The theme is obviously magic. The whole story is about wizards, good and bad ones and to bewitch random stuff. Normally I don’t really like the theme magic because it’s so unreal, but I like the Harry Potter books, so I don’t mind that those books are a ‘bit’ unreal.

4. Characters

Harry is a round character. In the beginning is he really brave and he’s sure he will destroy all the hallows. He’s also in love, which makes him feeling insecure. When their travel to find en destroy the hallows stucked a bit, he is more insecure than ever before because he knows that if he won’t find all the hallows, he’ll die. In the beginning is he a bit immature too, but in the end he’s grown up so fastly and he’s feeling and acting like an adult.

Ron is a round character. He’s very immature in the beginning and laughs about almost everything. When Harry and Ron are having a row in the middle of the book, Ron leaves Harry and Hermione and goes by himself. After a few weeks he turns back and it’s like he has saved up all his bravery and destroys one hallow together with Harry, which costs a lot of energy and emotions. When he turns back he’s also a bit grown up and acts more like an adult than like a teenager.

Hermione is a round character. She’s very smart and a socializer. She likes to read, that’s why she became so bright. In the beginning is she feeling very responsible, not only about herself but also about Harry and Ron. During the travel she discovers that Harry and Ron aren’t teenagers anymore too and she leaves her responsibility for them a bit, but not all of it. During the travel is she having a lot of different emotions, but at the end is everything okay and is she only happy.

Ginny is a flat character. She’s kind, brave and learned people are not allowed to mess around with her. She learned that because she has 6 older brothers. She’s in love with Harry, but he quitted their kind of relationship because he wasn’t sure that he was going to survive the travel. She’s very sad about that, but understands it too. She is younger than Harry, Ron and Hermione but not less brave as they are. She wants to come with them but they don’t allow her, because it’s too dangerous.

5. Plot

- When Harry has to leave his house where he’s been living the past 17 years. He has to

leave it because Voldemort and his followers can do bad things to him when he turns

17. Because his friends and the order of the phoenix think Voldemort knows about his

transporting, are six friends going to look exactly like Harry does. Firstly Harry doesn’t

want that, but they don’t have much time and he has to accept it

- The transporting of the seven Harry’s and protectors. They don’t know why, but

Voldemort and his followers knew about the transporting. They follow all the seven

Harrys and use magic spells which could lead to death. When the real Harry and Hagrid

(his protector) enter the place where they would assemble, there are only 2 groups

there. When everyone came back (not at the appointed time), it’s obviously that there

had gone something terrible wrong. And that’s true. One protector died, because the

shrewd ‘Harry’ suddenly went away because he didn’t want to die. Another ‘Harry’ lost

one ear because of a magic spell

- When Ron leaves Harry and Hermione. This is an important moment because of the

6. Setting

The story takes place in the United Kingdom, mostly in England. There are some places where the main person went to, but they’re not at a particular place, so the exact place is not explained very carefully.

The time isn’t exactly explained, but it’s clear that the story takes place in the modern time. That is clear, because there’s spoken about the underground, cars and other modern things in the story.

7. My opinion

Normally I don’t really like books with a lot of magic in it, but I think J. K. Rowling is a very good writer. She writes her books like that, that when you read them, you don’t even think “this can’t be real” because you almost live in the story by yourself. I’ve read all the Harry Potter books and I have to say that I liked the end. The first time I read the end, I was a little bit confused because Harry doesn’t know what is happening to him, but then I read it another time and I understood what was happening. The end is beautiful, just as many readers of the Harry Potter books wanted and expected the story to end.
