Ort’s (shortened from Morton) father goes to town for a few hours for Mr. Cherry. Then a car drives onto their property with a person called Mr. Wingham who tells them that Ort’s dad was involved in a car crash. After telling them this he takes them to the place where the accident happened. The car is a total loss and the ambulance has already left with Ort’s dad. Ort is told that his dad is extremely injured. The dashboard of the wrecked car is covered with blood. Ort’s mom is taken to the hospital to check on Ort’s father. Ort isn’t allowed to come along and is brought home by Mr. Mann.

When Ort asks Fat if he heard something about his dad Ort says, after trying to evade the question, that he isn’t allowed to speak about Ort’s dad. In addition the father of Fat, who brought Ort and Fat to school, was behaving very strange.  He also didn’t say a word about Ort’s dad. When Ort’s mom came home after school, she told Ort that his father is in a coma. His mother tells him that he was in a coma as well when he was a little child. He was suffering from meningitis and he was born at home without the aid of a doctor. At night Ort hears his sister Tegwyn moaning and thinks about how she hurts herself sometimes.

Chapter 3
It’s summer holiday. Ort and Fat go sailing on a raft made out of a car roof that they made the summer before. Fat tells Ort that his parents where arguing and that his mom hit his dad with a newspaper. Even after trying for a long time, Fat doesn’t want to tell Ort why his parents are in conflict. They sail for a few kilometres with the current towards an old mill. When they pass a bridge Fat remarks that someone is sitting under the bridge. They decide to spy on the person sitting under the bridge. It seems to be an old vagabond who is living under the bridge. When Fat heads home they encounter a man at the gas station owned by Fat’s parents. The man is angry because he isn’t being served. Ort and Fat fool him. Once inside Ort hears Fat’s parents arguing. Ort’s dad used to work in the garage next to the gas station.

Chapter 4
Ort is going to visit his father in the hospital for the first time. He thinks it’s very early since it’s only 10 o’clock in the morning. On their way to the hospital Ort’s mom tells him that his father looks a lot different from the last time they saw him. She describes how Ort’s father is lying in the hospital so that he will be prepared for the horrible sight of his father. She describes that his father has a drip to provide nutrition and he also is connected to a respiration machine. She also tells Ort about his physical condition and that he has countless wounds and because he doesn't use his mouth it is full of ugly ulcers. After they enter the room where Ort’s dad is he sees that his dad looks very miserable indeed. When they return home Ort’s mom comes to visit Ort when he’s in bed. His mother asks him if Ort remembers anything from when he was in a coma and if he was actually alive then. Ort tells his mom that he was and that he could also hear voices from far away.

However, Ort has to let out a huge fart, caused by his soft drink, a huge pile of canned tomatoes collapses and Tegwyn can escape. One can hits a slot machine, which after getting hit keeps giving free games. After leaving the store Ort and Tegwyn decide to go swimming to cool down. Later on Ort and Fat take a walk around town and into the forest. Fat starts throwing burning matches to Ort and they start to argue about Ort’s family. Fat insults all Ort’s family members and accuses Ort and his family of feeling better and more important than anyone else. When Fat accidentally sets a bush on fire they split up. Later that evening Mr. and Mrs. Cherry come visit Ort’s house to talk. Fat’s dad smells of beer. Fat’s parents accuse Ort of starting the fight between him and Fat and they demand that Ort is be punished. Ort walks away from his home. When he returns his mother tells him that his dad has awoke from his coma. That’s the end of part one.

He’s very excited, but when his dad arrives home he doesn’t respond to anything and he’s has a tube in his throat to breath through, which wasn’t what Ort expected. He thought his dad would come home himself and would be able to walk again. During diner Tegwyn says that she doesn’t want to go to school anymore and that she wants to find a job. Her mom tells here that if she stays in school two more years she’ll get a better job. She doesn’t agree with that and shouts out that she hates it at home. Ort’s mom starts crying. At night Ort checks up on everyone in the house. He’s thinks about his dad and gets so emotional that he starts shouting his thoughts, which wakes up everyone. Ort goes outside to look at the sky. Henry falls over the fence and his eye pops out, luckily it’s a glass eye. He tells Ort that he lost his eye at school when a ball hit him in the eye. Inside the house they start talking about Christmas and what everyone is going to do then. Tegwyn is very annoyed and makes negative remarks and starts teasing Ort. Ort asks Henry what the strange word is he always says and Henry tells Ort that he has got a speech impediment. At night Ort climbs out of his window and listens to the conversation between his mother and Henry. His mother tells Henry about when she moved in this house with Ort’s dad,  that they moved to this place because Ort’s dad liked the trees. Henry tells ther about his youth and about the problems his parents had with each other.

Chapter 8
Ort had a nightmare that he was all alone with his dad at home. He dreamt that the house was about to collapse and his dad gets “healed” by a strange white light. That day Ort suddenly remembers that he saw Henry before; he was the man living under the bridge. At breakfast Henry asks his mom if Mr. Cherry might have work for him. His mom tells him Mr. Cherry probably won’t but Ort suggests that he should go to Mr. Cherry and just ask. Later that day Henry takes Ort to Mr. Cherry to ask if he can get work there, but Mr. Cherry responds very hostilely. Ort suddenly asks if he can take his father’s tools with him, but Mr. Cherry tells Ort that everything in the workshop is his. That evening Henry tells more about his past, that he was a writer and was together with a woman. He tells Ort’s mom that she wasn’t a nice woman; she had the voice of a man and smelled like a dog. Later that evening when they’re gone Ort sneaks to their house and pisses against the front door. He goes to their backyard and finds a Christmas present for his mother. At home Ort’s mother and Tegwyn get into a fight. Christmas is a very sad happening because the Flack family is very poor and they weren’t able to afford each other presents. When the wafers are being passed Ort and his mom don’t get any. When the wine is passed around his mother quickly grabs two glasses. The wafers were only crackers and the wine was grape juice. When a man comes into the church to preach about the apocalypse Ort and his mom think he’s shouting at them and the leave angry.
