Roald Dahl is one of the most successful and well-known of all children’s writers. His books, which are read by children the world over, include James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Magic Finger, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Twits, The BFG and The Withes, winner of the 1983 Whitbread Award. Roald Dahl died in 1990 at the age of seventy-four. Main character The main character of this book is James Henry Trotter. James is a little boy who’s parents are died when James was four. After that, James must be live by his two aunts, Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker, who were terrible. James must work for them, always work … He had never being free. Even as the two aunt are going to shop, he were locked in his room. But James keeps trying to be a child with wishes and dreams. James have a lot of brilliant ideas, but these ideas are not seen as brilliant by his environment.
Summary James Henry Trotter, a four year old little boy had a happy live with his parents, but at one day when they visit the London Zoo, his parents got eaten up by an enormous angry Rhinoceros! After this, the house where sold and James lived was send away to his two aunts, Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker. Aunt Sponge is very fat, but her sister Spiker was very thin. These two aunts were both really horrible people. They were lazy and cruel to James. And from the beginning, they start beating him for almost no reason at all. They never called him James, but always like ‘you disgusting little creature’. The house of the two aunts was in an bad condition and laid on the top of a hill. The hill was very high and on the garden-side, it ended in the ocean. After James Henry Trotter had been living with his aunts for three years there came a morning when something rather peculiar happened to him. When James worked, he began thinking about all the other children in the world and what they might be doing at this moment. James turned and ran. He ran off as fast as he could to the far end of the garden and hit himself behind that clump of dirty old laurel bushes. Then he covered his face with his hands and began to cry. Than suddenly, James heard a rustling of leaves, he turned round and saw an old man. When he spoke, his voice was very slow and creaky. The old man put a hand into the pocket of his jacket and took out a small white paper bag. He give James green things that looked like little stones or crystals. He told him that those green things had power and magic in it. To get magic himself, he must take a large jug of water, and pour all the little green things into it. Then, very slowly, one by one, he must add ten hairs from his own head; the water begun to bubble and bubble. Then he should drink the jug directly in one gulp. The magic will turn him on. But … James went back to his home and his foot slipped, just near the old peach tree; He fell flat on his face in the grass. The paper bag burst open as it hit the ground. Thousands of the tiny green things were scattered in all directions. James tried to pick up all the green things and put them back, but the tiny things seems to move into the ground. When his two aunts discovered that James wasn’t working at all, James must continue chopping wood, forced by his aunts. The next day, aunt Spiker was the first who saw one peach in the old peach tree, which was strange because the tree never gets peaches nor blossom on it. The aunts of James staring at the tree. The peach start growing and growing. Later it was as tall and wide, in fact, as a small house! People heard about it, comes to look and as soon as possible the aunts had an idea, they let put a strong fence and let people pay to see the enormous peach. James stood alone in the garden, wondering what to do. It was night and the moon was brightly shining. He started walking slowly towards the giant peach. he climbed over the fence that surrounded it. And there he stood directly near the enormous peach. When he touched the peach, he saw there was a hole in one side of the peach. The hole was large enough to fit in. James crawled in it, it was dark inside and there was damp all around him, the smell there was bittersweet smell of fresh peach. He noticed a small door, cut into the face of the peach stone. He gave a push and it swung open. James heard a voice. He stopped and stared at the speakers. He saw creatures: - one Old-green-Grasshopper, - an enormous Spider. - And next to the Spider, there was a giant Ladybird. - On the floor , there was a Silkworm, - an Earthworm, - a Glow-worm - and a Centipede. James, first afraid and timid, became friends with the creatures. James and all these creatures slept in the peach. James liked his new friends and is happy that he got freed of his two horrible aunts! The next day they had become awake. The peach was started rolling and rolling. It rolls over everything is came in his way. At last it rolled into the ocean, outside in the garden. James and the creatures saw that they dropped in the middle of the sea
First they liked this idea, but suddenly they saw sharks swimming around the peach and were afraid. James gets an idea and with his friends they trapped seagulls and they bind ropes on the seagulls. After picking up more then five hundred seagulls, the peach began to fly. James and his friends fell asleep. James and his friends travelled in the peach without knowing were they go. While they are travel they see “Cloud-Man” busy, after the Centipede get their attention (he was yelling to them), the “Cloud-Man” starting to shovel hailstones downside. James and his friends saw the hailstones coming into the peach, like bullets from a machinegun; the peach is leaking. Next morning when they woke up they saw streets, cars and houses. He knew they were in America. Then a plane went by and cut the silken strings keeping the peach in the air by the seagulls. Now they were going down (fast) and they landed on the Empire State Building. They were rich and famous in their new country. Every day of the week, hundreds of children from far and near came into the City to see James and the peach stone in the park. Genre This book is a fantasy book. There are things in it, which, in reality, can’t happened. Like the enormous creatures, who are crowed by little green things which glow and sparkle in the most wonderful way. Opinion I like this book very much, because of the creatures. Also because the book is written by Roald Dahl, a very popular, funny author who I likes. It is a book for people who loves fantasy. In this book you have much to laugh. Some things can’t, in reality, happened, but this book is nice to read, because of the typical fantasy of Roald Dahl. It’s a nice book, but there are some words, that make it difficult to understand, because of the typical English words (sometimes not really words), but the drawings, make you understand it better.
