Chapter one:

Marcus and his mum are sitting in the car. Marcus is asking about Roger, her (ex)boyfriend. He is asking if they split up. She doesn’t want to tell him why she did. Marcus liked Roger, but he is a bit worried about the situation. Marcus has had two lives: One had ended four years ago when he was eight and his parents divorced. The other was messier and his mum had boyfriends that kind of stuff. But he did like it. He preferred being boring.

Chapter two:

Will is 36 years old. He is reading a magazine and is thinking about how ‘cool’ he is. He is feeling like a little boy and he acts like it too.

He was visiting his friends, John and Christine. They have a new baby: Imogen, but he didn’t want to ask about the baby or even see the baby. The reason for that is because he doesn’t like babies and they were asking him most of the time when he was ready for a baby.

John and Christine became different after their first baby. Before they went to discos with Will and his girlfriend Jessica. But that’s over now. She wanted to exchange the froth and frivolity for something more solid. He misses her.  John and Christine are asking Will if he’d like to be godfather of Imogen, but he said no, that's not for him. A couple of weeks later he met Angie and he became stepfather for the first time.

Chapter three:

Marcus is going to school in London for the first time and he is a bit scared. Because he is very smart he is in a class with children much older than himself. He is afraid that they will laugh at him because he is so small. His mum doesn't make it easier on him; she didn’t want Marcus listening to Snoop Doggy or was playing computer games or watching television. She wants him to listen to Joni Mitchell, read a book, things like that. After arguing he agreed with his mother, but he kids at school didn’t. They thought it was stupid. Everyday the kids teased him.

Chapter four:

Will meets Angie for the first time in a restaurant. After some miscommunication they made a date. They fell in love, but there was a problem; Angie had already two kids. He told her that it wasn’t any problem, but it was.

After being with Angie and the kids for six weeks, Will was feeling a bit weird. He wasn’t Simon. Simon was Angie's ex and she was still wrestling with her feelings about him. Also the whole kid thing got in the way sometimes.

Will was just beginning to wonder whether Angie was exactly what he was looking for when she decided to finish it.
She said it wasn’t Will’s fault, but her ex's, Simon. He doesn’t want her to see somebody else. The tragedy was that she had met someone just right for her at precisely the wrong time. Will knew it-single mothers were great for him!

His career as a serial nice guy had begun.

Chapter five:

Marcus woke up and the first thing that he saw was his mother crying. He didn’t ask about it because he didn’t know how to react. He just acted normally.

When he went to school he was thinking about his mother all the time, but when he got to school he didn’t think about it anymore. He went to his friends but didn't say much to him. When they got inside a couple older students were walking in their direction. They were teasing them. After they left, Marcus friends were told him that they don’t want Marcus hanging with them anymore. That was because from the moment they were hanging with each other the older students began to tease them as well. They made Marcus visible, but now he’d nowhere to go…

Chapter six:

Will decides to go to a single-parents group. SPAT (Single Parents-Alone Together) When he came there for the first time he was the only man and met Frances, the woman that is leading the group. Then more single mothers came. He didn’t feel good there. He needed to answer questions he didn't know the answer to and was the only man. Then he met Suzie and felt better after speaking with her.

Chapter seven:

Marcus went to his dad’s in Cambridge for the weekend. They went to Lindsey’s mum. Lindsey is his dad’s girlfriend.
When he got back he was looking for a magazine in a shop. Then the kids from school came in and began to tease him. They had put candy bars in Marcus’ pocket to frame him as a thief. When he got home his mum was lying on the floor watching cartoons. She never watched cartoons and she didn't go to work that afternoon. When Marcus asked what sort of sick she was she didn’t answer. When Marcus became mad at her she started crying. “You’ve got to stop this, mum!” Marcus said that she is not a good mother to him and someone else had to take care him.

Then his mum went to a picnic with the group SPAT. Marcus had to go and Suzie had to take care of him that afternoon. Suzie is his mother’s best friend. But he didn’t like to go.

Chapter eight:

Today is picnic day,the day that Will and Marcus meet each other.
First Will is thinking of how stupid he is to make things up about is two-year-old son or his ex-wife. He never can take Suzie to his home…this is very difficult for him.
When Marcus goes with Suzie and her daughter Megan to the picnic, he met Will. They don’t like each other. Will is asking Suzie about Marcus. Marcus says his mother is nuts. Suzie keeps asking about Will’s son. Then Marcus is coming and he said he’d killed a duck…

Chapter nine:

They all go to see the dead duck. Marcus hate the sound Will is talking to him. Then the park-keeper is standing next to them and he’s asking who killed the duck. Will tells him that he was already dead and Marcus tried to sink him. The park-keeper didn’t believe it, but said nothing about it.

Then they’re going home and Marcus sees the scariest thing in his life. Much scarier then which horror movie he’d seen. His mother was lying on the ground with a lot of green nasty puke next to her. She’d taken a bottle of pills to kill herself. Suzie screamed and Will called an ambulance. “Fiona! You have a kid, why are you doing this?” Suzie said. Marcus thought of the moment when he stood by the lake in the park: he saw his mother smiling…she was like a ghost.

Chapter ten:

They went to the hospital and Suzie is going with Fiona. Will is driving Marcus and Megan in Suzie’s car. When they got there it was just waiting and waiting. Marcus went a lot to get something out of the machine. He didn’t felled sad or something. After all they were asking to go home and Marcus slept on Suzie’s home. Will said goodbye and went home. This night was interesting for Will, but he wouldn’t want to do it every night.

Chapter eleven:

When Marcus came home he saw a letter on the table. He began to read it. It was a suicide letter of his mum. How could she do that?
When Suzie and Fiona (Marcus’ mum) got home she saw him with the letter. A arguing began and ended with nothing. Fiona said she was feeling much better. Marcus had never not trusted her, but now he is very angry and don’t trust his mum!
They decided to order some food and get a movie. Marcus didn’t know what to pick. He chose finally a humour film, because there weren’t people in the movie that kills them selves. But he was wrong. When they watched it he turned the television off, because of the suicide, but his mum want to watch the movie to the end. She did like nothing was happened.

Chapter twelve:

Will was at home and was thinking about his day-things. He thought about a job, but didn’t felt anything for it. He tried it, but it didn’t work. Then he thought about asking Fiona for a day with him. He called Suzie to ask if it could be possible to take Marcus out. She asked why he didn’t asked Fiona. He said it was OK. So he called Marcus and he said yes, but if his mum would come with them. Off course! So that was settled.
Now he must know all about his own make up child ‘Ned’. He bought a car seat, candy and chips to sprinkle the car seat.

Chapter thirteen:

Marcus and his mother were making themselves ready to go with Will. Marcus thought it was the perfect moment to create a new family. After his mothers suicide thing he realized that two isn’t enough. He wants more people and if anyone would die, no one would be alone. So this was the perfect moment, if he liked Will or not. So when Will came, Marcus wanted to go to Planet Hollywood because it was famous. But when they get there it was raining and they were standing in a load of people that wanted to go in.

Will was able to convent Marcus to go to another place. When they were there, nobody was talking so Marcus tried to help them. After a while the got annoying with his pressure about talking between Will and Fiona. But after all they were talking without Marcus’ help.

Chapter fourteen:

Will thinks Fiona isn’t his type. Everything doesn’t sound good for him. But he knew they’d all started something that wasn’t finished.
After the lunch Will was invited to supper. He didn’t like what they had to eat and he founds it weird that Fiona closed her eyes with playing on the piano and sings a sensitive song. After this date he knew he must quit with the friendships with Suzie, Fiona and SPAT. His lies were too much to be come true. When he was home, Marcus came by to ask if he was telling the truth. Had Will any children’s? No. Will was afraid and had no explanation why he’d lied! So he didn’t talk. Marcus had a deal…if Will kept dating with his mum, he would not tell her anything. Marcus’ mum is sad, she would like a boyfriend.
Marcus thinks Will want to go out with Suzie. Then he went, but he will com back!

Chapter fifteen:

Marcus went for the second time to Wills place. Will wasn’t too pleased to see him. Marcus asked a lot of stupid questions like: “Why do you do that?” and “Because…?” and “What is this?” and he was very annoying for Will. After that visit Marcus visited Will a lot that autumn, and by about the third or fourth time he felt that Will was getting used to him. Sometimes they argued, but now Will began to ask things. Something about Marcus’ hair. Why he didn’t went to the hair dresser. He was old enough! Marcus liked that he was called ‘old enough’. Will was also worried about his mum. He actually didn’t want to know, but he asked Marcus though. Marcus lied. He said it was OK, but he felt worse. Every time he went home he felt sick and he wanted to cry. But can he tell Will that?

Chapter sixteen:

Will finds out that Marcus visits were normal every day. So he thought he must go on and think about it as a fabric of his day. One time Marcus’ dad came as a subject. Marcus did like to tell Will about his dad.

The following week Will was interrupted by some sounds. He didn’t want to hear it, but he went to look. He saw Marcus standing with other boys. The boys were trying to embed sweets into Marcus skull. He had scared them away. Marcus seemed not bothering it, but Will knew he was. He asked about it and Marcus was still looking straight to the television.
Will (and Marcus) tried to find out what Marcus had to do to make the ties stop. Will said Marcus had to look as everybody else. Just do something about the outside. At first they went shopping to buy new shoes. Marcus liked it very much and Will thought it was a great thing to do for him and that it would help to stop the teasing. But it wasn’t. The next day Marcus came to Will and Will saw Marcus haven’t got any shoes on. They had been stolen.

Chapter seventeen:

Will gave Marcus a ride home. When his mother asked Marcus where his shoes were he couldn’t lie because it has no sense. They were stolen and Marcus knew Fiona would ask a lot of questions and she did. Why? Who? Which shoes?
He had to tell that Will gave new shoes and that Will had become a friend. He also told that Will haven’t got a child or an ex-wife. Fiona was MAD!
She went straight with Marcus to Wills house. She went crazy and asked him everything, but Will also gets angry because Fiona was accusing him for things he didn’t do. And Will would say something about her suicide trying if Marcus didn’t stopped him. Will told Fiona everything about Marcus at school. That he didn’t was save there. First Fiona didn’t believe it until Marcus said it was true. After the arguing at Wills place, Marcus and his mum had a conversation too. Marcus asked himself why his mother always won the discussions between them…because she had good arguments. But he tells his mum he want to make decisions of his own. His mother didn’t believe it and didn’t want it.
But he said he wanted someone to talk and be with, except his own mother. She proposed Suzie, but she is just like her. He wanted Will. His mother was telling that it isn’t enough to say that Marcus would think for himself, he must show it to her. But how, thought Marcus. “Give me a good reason” said Fiona and Marcus said: “Because I need a father”
And his mum started crying.

Chapter eighteen:

Will heard his father’s song at first when a woman with a violin was playing it. ‘Santa’s super sleigh’ He hated that song because he hated Christmas. His father hated Christmas too. The song was a reminder of how badly he had failed in his life.
So Christmas was the season of anger. When his father died and his mother was gone, he spend the days with girlfriends’ parents or family.
When he heard the song at first, he first thought of his father and then of Marcus. He didn’t know why. He thought he seemed to have no control over his relationship with Marcus and Fiona. Then Fiona rang and started to say mad things down the phone. Will didn’t know why Fiona called. She was angry and Will just didn’t understood. After all Fiona said that they could better talk about it properly, but Will asked why and what. She wanted to talk face-to-face. Will had never been alone with Fiona but there wasn’t any sexual interest or whatsoever. So he thought there was no interesting about her, but there was indeed.

They were talking…well Fiona was talking. About Marcus and the relationship between them
Finally she said it was better that Marcus didn’t saw will any more. Will agreed.

Chapter nineteen:

Marcus was waiting until his mum came back. She was talking with Will. When she came back she told Marcus that if he went to Will, Will wouldn’t answer the door. He didn’t worry…he would keep ringing.

He’d to go to the headmistress of his school to tell about his stolen shoes, but he can’t tell the truth because then they would steal all of his clothes, he thought.
When he was waiting for the headmistress another girl came in: Ellie McCrae. He know her, but she didn’t know him. She was older and she was always in trouble. They were a bit talking and then Mrs. Morrison came out to ask Marcus to come in. “Bye Ellie”
Mrs. Morrison didn’t like him, nobody did. She said HE must get out of THERE way so they couldn’t do it. He was mad and he walked out while she demands him to stay. He felt good he did that. This was the beginning of a change.

Chapter twenty:

Will loved driving around London. Just he in his own car, for singing so loud as he can or just knowing the way around.
Then he saw Marcus ambling Upper Street. He wrestled with the situation. Would he stop or would he not? He wasn’t at school…did he care? No, not a lot and he drove home.
When it was 4:15 the doorbell rang…of course it was Marcus and Will didn’t answered. But after thirty minutes he gave it up.
Marcus asked Will a favour to bring him and a friend to football, because he’d like O’Bane…that was the guy where Ellie was talking about and he was standing on he t-shirt. But Will said there wasn’t any O’Bane. Then Will asked why he wasn’t at school and Marcus told him about Mrs. Morrison.

Marcus asked Will to talk with her but Will said he should go to his mum. But Marcus said that Will knows things and his mum didn’t. Now Will knows what kind of help Marcus needed.

Chapter twenty-one:

Next day nobody missed Marcus at school. With break time he bumped into Ellie and told her that the guy on her shirt wasn’t a player, but a singer. Ellie knew that, but she’d always her jokes. Marcus told her about ‘his friend’ Will.
The conservation was the longest he ever had had with anyone at school. He was so happy, but Will said it doesn’t was anything. Next day he went to her again and she was laughing all the time with her girlfriend Zoe. But Marcus thought she was nice. She smiled and was interested. Then Mrs. Morrison came to talk to Ellie. She’d also said she wasn’t ready with Marcus.

At lunchtime Ellie and Zoe came to him and everybody looked up! Ellie said at loud Marcus was their friend and he didn’t belong to the boring fuckers! So he was feeling great! He walked to them and Ellie gave him a kiss. Wow this moment was really awesome!
When they were walking to the ‘room of Ellie and zoe’ a teacher stopped them to ask everybody was OK…and Marcus hoped it was. Then he came a room in for fans of Kurt Cobain…but he wasn’t…Was he really ‘adopted’ as the teacher said? It did feel like it…

Chapter twenty-two:

Will still didn’t know what to do with Christmas and thought about it very hardly. Then on that moment Marcus came to his flat. He asked right away if he’d like to spend Christmastime at their place. Will don’t know, because his mother will complain. Marcus said she thinks it’s OK, because Marcus asked if he could ask a friend to com with Christmas and she said yes. She knew Marcus didn’t have any friends.
Finally Will sad on the table with Fiona, Clive and Lindsey, Marcus and Lindsey’s mother. Celebrating Christmas, when he didn’t liked Christmas. They all gave presents. Will got Fiona an expensive glass vase and Marcus a vinyl copy of Nevermind and a t-shirt with Kurt Cobain on it. So he could keep in with Ellie.

Fiona gave him a book: The single parent’s handbook as a joke.
Marcus had presents of his parents, but it weren’t the presents what he needs to get, thought Will. It was for Will not very nice because he hated Christmas but he did something else than sitting at home. But at least he was gracious about his presents.

Chapter twenty-three:

Marcus was very glade with his presents. He gets twice as much because his parents were separated. After dinner Clive started to roll a joint and Fiona and Lindsey were mad on Clive because of Marcus and Lindsey’s mum. But then Fiona and Lindsey were also arguing. Then it stopped and they’d laugh about what Marcus had said. Every body was a bit changed.
Then supper began and Suzie came in with her little girl. Will didn’t knew what to do. He turned red and wanted to leave, but Fiona asked to sit down. Suzie ignored Will…
Then Megan went to the Christmas tree and she gave a present to Will and he didn’t know what to do. “Play with her.” But he didn’t want to. There was a fight and now Will did stand up and wanted to get home but Marcus didn’t want it. Marcus said he invited Will and was angry about the thing Will knew about Kurt Cobain and clothes and his mum didn’t. he said it all and finally Will sad down again.

Chapter twenty-four:

Will met a beautiful woman on New Year’s Eve. She was called Rachel and she illustrated children’s books. He felt in love, but Will didn’t thought he’d ever fall in love. Then Rachel came and sits next to him. He missed Ned…that was a good thing to talk about. Then she asked how he knew Robert. Robert used to be dope dealer and Will was a friend and customer. Know he produced television programmes and he’d invited Will to his party. He didn’t know why they kept in touch.
Rachel was already talking to someone else and Will kept thinking how he could reel her back with. But it wasn’t necessary. She turned back so he could talk with them. Will didn’t want to lie to her, but it was hard. He could bring a lot of things to get her interested. But when they were talking about Marcus she understood that he was Wills son. After a small conversation they kissed at midnight.

Chapter twenty-five:

Marcus saw Ellie on Suzie’s New Year’s Eve party. Ellie’s mum is a good friend of Suzie. Ellie was glad to see Marcus. They were talking and Ellie offered him a drink with coke and sherry. She looked at her mum dancing like a crazy person. Ellie was embarrassed. Marcus and Ellie were talking about there parents. Ellie asked Marcus if his mum had tried to kill herself, but his answer was no. Ellie was different. He had never had a proper talk with someone of his own age before. Ellie was a girl, older than he and scary. Marcus still had to watch what he said. Then they were talking about divorced parents and that every child was living at there mum’s place. Then Marcus asked Ellie to dance because he thought that boys were supposed to ask girls at parties. But she said definitely no! Ellie disappeared off somewhere for a smoke, but Ellie came back at midnight and hugged him. Then she wanted Marcus to see something disgusting. It was her mum kissing with frantic energy with Tim porter. She’s drunk and they do it every year. Tomorrow she thinks it’s “PATHETIC” she screamed. Her mum looked up and she demands Ellie to go inside. Ellie didn’t bothered, because her mum’s kind of deserves it.

Chapter twenty-six:

Marcus and Will were walking to an amusement arcade to play on the video machines and they both knew that there was a difficult conversation was coming. Marcus asked why he’d said to Rachel that Will was his dad and Will tried to explain. Marcus want will to tell her the truth but Will didn’t. He still wanted to impress her and Will would like to have her as his girlfriend. Marcus had Ellie seen more than once and now he knew he would like to have her as his girlfriend. He explains to Will why.
Will saw their feelings where much different.
Marcus went with Will to Rachel’s place to pretend he is Will’s son. Marcus started to ask questions about himself so Will would really knows his ‘son’. When they came there they meted Ali. Ali was Rachel’s son. Will saw immediately that this wasn’t going to work. Ali was cool and Marcus wasn’t. then Marcus were left with Ali and Will and Rachel went downstairs. After a while Rachel looked and Marcus has gone home.

Chapter twenty-seven:

Marcus was upstairs with Ali. Ali was nuts: he said if Will and his mum ever dated again he would kill Marcus. It didn’t work between them so he went outside to take a bus home, because he didn’t want to disturb Will. Will found him by the bus stop and took him inside the car. Will wanted to go back but Marcus of course didn’t. After he heard Ali was crying like a three year old he was happy to go back to Rachel’s. They went inside and Ali apologized.

On Monday after school Marcus, Ellie and Zoe went hanging out. They reached a shop and they weren’t allowed to come in, because the owner thought they would steel something. Ellie and Zoe ignored him but Marcus went outside. He saw Lee Hartley and a couple of his mates. They removed Marcus’ glasses and put them on.

Then Ellie and Zoe came out of the shop and scared them away and Ellie also hit Lee. Marcus really felt in love with her.

Chapter twenty-eight:

Will thought differently about Marcus’ situation with Ellie, but Marcus just wanted to be with her. When Will wanted to correct any bad impressions with Rachel, it didn’t quit worked at first. He told her that he didn’t was the natural father of Marcus. Rachel had questions, but it was simple; he wasn’t Marcus’ father or related to him.
Then he started to explain slowly. How he met Marcus he didn’t tell her exactly. Whey it was interesting for her to have a son etc.
After coffee and more talking about it, she said that he wasn’t the guy she thought he was before he brought Marcus up.

Chapter twenty-nine:

For three or four weeks Marcus had changed. Will took him to have his hair cut and bought him new glasses and now he knew some singers he liked that Ellie didn’t hate. But then his mum started the crying thing again.
But now he had loads of people around them..: Will and Ellie of course.
After the second breakfast crying day he went to Will and told him about it. Marcus was worried, but didn’t know what to do.
Will said that he might talk to her. Will isn’t good to cheer his mum up. After Marcus called Will ‘a friend’ Will thought about it and it was a friend, but he still acted like an adult to Marcus.
When he was on school, Ellie was very sad. Kurt Cobain had tried to kill himself. Marcus asked if he is all right but her answer was: “In the end they always want to die, no matter what.” Marcus suddenly felt sick and became mad. She didn’t know him!

Chapter thirty:

Will wanted to help Marcus, but not with the depression thing of his mother. He had thought about it, but definitely didn’t want it. People like Fiona really pissed him off. They ruined it for everyone. He needed someone buoyant to hang on to: Rachel.

He went to see her. There relationship was weird; they still hadn’t had sex. The subject just never came up, but he was sure she liked him. He thought about why it didn’t. Then suddenly that evening it happened. Ali was gone and she was leading him upstairs.

Before that Will began a conversation about the whole Marcus an Fiona thing. Rachel didn’t get the point. She advises him tough. After the whole thing there was this pause and they started kissing.
Afterwards Rachel said that she could talk to Fiona. But Will doesn’t saw why that would matter. It could maybe help but he didn’t want thinking about it…he was feeling so happy.

Chapter thirty-one:

Winter was over and Marcus didn’t get used to it. He hoped when the clock had gone forward every thing would change, but of course it wasn’t.
His mother told him that his father felt off a window ledge and he had got to go up and see him. “Why?”, because he’s asking for Marcus. “Maybe he’s having this big think about his life.” His mother said. Marcus went crazy! His mum already had big thinks, now his dad too!
He didn’t want to go, until he talked with Ellie. She offered to go with him and to tell what he thinks about his dad.
They went to his dad’s. Kurt Cobain had shot himself afterwards. He saw it in the ‘old guy’s paper’. He didn’t know if Ellie already read it or had seen it. He also didn’t know what to do. So when they got on the station Marcus said she must close her eyes. She must trust him, so she did. When they were on the right spot she said she already knew that Kurt had died. She wasn’t OK. “I’m going to get drunk.” She said.

Chapter thirty-two:

The idea of talking to Fiona wasn’t bad. So they went over for a drink. They went with Will, Fiona and Rachel to a pub. When they were there Will would go away so Fiona and Rachel would have a chat.

When Will and Fiona already had arrived they waited for Rachel. After 30 minutes they sad down and began to talk. Will knew Rachel did this on purpose so Will and Fiona would have a chat together. It was easier than Will thought. She was crying and Will proposed to eat something. Then the talk came on the subject of her depression. When it started..
She hadn’t really wanted to be a mother, sometimes she hates Marcus. Will become frightened of that Fiona said there would be a cause of all this misery.
When they went home with a taxi will heard on the radio that Kurt Cobain was dead. He thought about Marcus and Ellie and that they won’t understand.
Will was fearful and he had never had an intuition like this before. He wanted to make sure everything was OK with Marcus and Ellie. But it wasn’t ok. Marcus sounded little, frightened and lonely.

Chapter thirty-three:

When Marcus and Ellie sad on the train Ellie was threaten to press the emergency stop button and that kind of stuff. Marcus knew now that he didn’t want her to be his girlfriend. She wasn’t right for him. Marcus asked her why it bothered that Kurt died. She loved him and thought the way he did. She felt like shooting herself also sometimes. She had a shit time.
Marcus tried to work out how to explain Ellie to his dad.
Then Ellie suddenly jumped out of the train. Marcus had a sick felling and he jumped after her. She didn’t want to go to his dad because she doesn’t know him.
Then she took off one of her boots and threw it at the glass where Kurt Cobain’s cardboard was. There were people looking what had happened.
Then they went to the police station. Marcus tried to explain but it didn’t made sense. Ellie tried to protect him, but they’d to wait for parents to pick them up. Lindsey and Marcus’ dad were the first. Marcus father was mad and asked who exactly Ellie was? Ellie wasn’t Marcus friend anymore…thought Marcus. But she said she was. His dad said that Marcus probably thought it was his fault.
Then Marcus said things to his dad that he wanted to say. Ellie thought it was cool. Fiona and Ellie’s mum (and Will) were coming to pick them up.

Chapter thirty-four:

When Will and Fiona got home Will rang Rachel to ask if she really would com to see Fiona. But she wasn’t. he told her about Marcus an Ellie and hang up. Then Katrina called: Ellie’s mum. Fiona offered Katrina a lift to the police station. She told during the ride that Ellie went crazy when she heard of Kurt Cobain. They were talking about the dead of Kurt. When they arrived at the police station they were all together waiting for the shop owner. The policewoman said that criminals must get face-to-face with victims of crime. Finally Ellie apologized and it seemed OK until Marcus’ mum stood up and took action. That she wasn’t a good mother to Marcus…this was a very strange situation. Fiona was weird. Marcus said: “I can’t believe how crap my parents are.” They went to burger bar for supper. Ruth (owner of the shop) and Ellie sat apart and whispering.

Chapter thirty-five:

Marcus finally ended up going to stay with Clive and Lindsey.
Marcus didn’t know why he said a lot of mean things to them. When they arrived Lindsey went to bed so Clive and Marcus could talk in private.
Clive had been thinking and he said that Marcus needs a father, but Marcus thinks he’s OK.
They talked a bit longer about Lindsey and how she wanted a baby. Hid dad couldn’t decide. Marcus wanted to have more people around him so he thought it was OK. Next morning he went back to his mother.

Chapter thirty-six:

Wanting Rachel so much still frightened Will. What good was it doing to him?
Most Saturdays now, Will took Ali and Marcus out somewhere to give the mothers a break. But the most he wanted to wriggle his way into Rachel’s life.
Marcus and Ali still didn’t like each other that much.

Marcus had won the argument with his mother over whether he should be allowed to go shopping with Will. He went to the hairdresser regularly and the friendship with Ellie was normal.

Will kind of missed Marcus around to talk. One day Ali asked Will if he would marry his mum. Marcus said he would like to have Will marry HIS mother.

One day when Will dropped Marcus at home, Fiona said that she was losing Marcus. But she didn’t bother. She was feeling better without his big care.
Will did have found a reason for that. Marcus had friends, could take care of himself. He wasn’t very hard to cope with anymore. Will knew then beyond any shadow of a doubt, that Marcus would be OK.
