Title: The curious incident of the dog in the night-time.
Number of pages: 272
Time it took you to read the book: 8,5 hours
Explain the title and think of a better one:
I don’t think you can give this book a better title. Because there’s so much to explain about the title. In the book, Christopher tries to investigate who murdered Wellington, the neighbour’s dog. So he tries to solve the “curious incident”. He loves Sherlock Holmes, and one of the passages in Conan Doyles’ book “Silver Blaze” is: "Is there any other point to which you would like to draw my attention?" "To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time." "The dog did nothing in the night-time." "That was the curious incident." In that book, a horse has been stolen, but the dog didn’t bark, so the thief must have been familiar to the dog.
Characterize three important characters from your book in three adjectives.
Christopher John Francis Boone – Asperger’s Syndrome, intelligent, honest
Mother – Sweet, afraid for her son, friendly
Explain the relationships between the most important characters.
Christopher loves his father, and his mother, but he thinks she died of a heart attack.
Father: he loves Christopher, but his wife left him and he can’t deal with that so he told Christopher that she died of a heart attack. He hides the letters from Christopher’s mother, for Christopher.
Mother: she is a nice woman who has a difficult time with Christopher, she loves their neighbour and left to live together in London. She finds it difficult to deal with the problem that she can’t see her son anymore.
Decide on what you think is the most important moment in the book, and turn it into a 1-minute film script, i.e. choose your actors, describe the setting and the action etc.
Christopher – Gregory Smith
Ed (Father) - Hugo Weaving
*Like a memory*
Christopher sitting in is his room.
*Silence*
*Ed enters*
Ed: (Voice sounds far away) “Christopher, what the hell are you doing?”
*Ed sees the cupboard*
Ed: “What the fuck are you…? (shouting) That’s my cupboard, Christopher. Those are…”
*Ed sees the letters*
Ed: “Oh shit… shit, shit, shit, shit, shit”
*Silence*
*Ed puts his hand on Chris’ shoulder. (Camera is zooming in)*
Ed: “Oh Christ”
*Voice of Christopher (from his mind): “It didn’t hurt when he touched me, like it normally does. I could see him touching me, like I was watching a film of what was happening in the room, but I could hardly feel his hand at all. It was just like the wind blowing against me.”*
Has this book taught you to think differently about certain things? Explain.
I never realised how you can think different when you have Asperger’s Syndrome. Those kinds of people try to find some logic in everything. They can’t live without logicand rules.
Write a 75-word review for a youth magazine about the book:
The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-time is written by Mark Haddon. He has written it from the point of view of the main-character, Christopher Boone, who has the Asperger’s Syndrome. His way of thinking and his look at the world gives the reader a heavy heart. But sometimes the book is also very funny. In fact the book is a report of a murder, solved by Christopher, whose role model is Sherlock Holmes.
I recommend you to read this book!
