The Catcher in the Rye is the ultimate novel for disaffected youth, but it's relevant to all ages. The story is told by Holden Caulfield, a seventeen- year-old dropout who has just been kicked out of his fourth school. Throughout, Holden dissects the 'phony' aspects of society, and the 'phonies' themselves: the headmaster whose affability depends on the wealth of the parents, his roommate who scores with girls using sickly-sweet affection.

Meer informatie
Title: The catcher in the rye Title explanation: It refers to a poem of Robert Burns: ‘If a body meets a body walking through the rye.’ Holden interpreted meets as catch, he has to catch little children playing in a field of rye (rogge), to prevend them from falling of a cliff. Characters: Holden Caulfield: main character, he is expelled from his boarding school for the third time. He has an oppinion about everything. Phoebe Caulfield: The sweet smart little sister of Holden.
Sally Hayes: An old friend of Holden. Jane Gallagher: The only girl that Holden seems to care about. Wald Stradlater: The roommate at Pency (tough guy). Story: Holden Caulfield was kicked out of Pency, a boarding school. He officially had to stay there for another four days, until christmas holidays, before he could go home. Because he didn’t felt like waiting, he leaves to his hometown, New York. He didn’t want to go home, because his parents didn’t knew about him, being expelled for the thirth time. The first night he stayed in a hotel and he wanted to spend the night with a prostitude. He made a deal with Maurice, the elevator guy. Maurice would send up a prostitude for five dollars. Holden agreed. Sunny, the prostitude came to his room and Holden changed his mind. He gave Sunny five dollars and she demanded ten. Maurice came up to the room and had a fight with Holden. In the end, Sunny left with ten dollars and Holden fell asleep. The next day, Holden called Sally Hayes for a date. They met in the afternoon. They went ice-skating and to a orchestra performance called: ‘I know love’. That evening, he went to a bar and he had too many drinks. He flirted around a little bit, but didn’t left a good impression. Holden went home that night. His parent were away. His little sister Phoebe was sleeping. He woke her up and borrowed some money. When Phoebe found out that Holden had got the axe again, she got very angry at him. Holden went to a teacher’s house in the middle of that night. He slept on the couch for a few hours, then he woke up. At that moment his teacher, Mr. Antolini was ptting him on his head. Holden thought that Mr. Antolini was making a flitty pass at him, and he freaked out. He ran away without saying a word. He went to the waiting room of the trainstation and fell asleep again. The next day, Holden wanted to see Phoebe again and he went to her school. When he met her, he told her that he wanted to go West, alone. She got angry again and ignored him for a while. When he was looking at her while she was angry, he realised that he wanted to stay afther all. They both went home, where he had a difficult talk with his parents. It ends there, leaving you curious on what had to come of Holden Caulfield. I guess we’ll never know.
