'Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show'. Dickens' epic, exuberant novel is one of the greatest coming-of-age stories in literature. It chronicles David Copperfield's extraordinary journey through life, as he encounters villains, saviours, eccentrics and grotesques, including the wicked Mr Murdstone, stout-hearted Peggotty, formidable Betsey Trotwood, impecunious Micawber and odious Uriah Heep. Dickens' great Bildungsroman (based, in part, on his own boyhood, and which he described as a 'favourite child') is a work filled with life, both comic and tragic. The Penguin English Library - 100 editions of the best fiction in English, from the eighteenth century and the very first novels to the beginning of the First World War.

Is school he meets Steerforth and Traddles. In the holidays David goes home. When his mother dies, Peggotty leaves the house and marries Mr. Barkis (the carrier). There isn’t enough money to go back to school, so David has to work. He comes to live at Mr. Micawber’s house. After Mr. Micawber has spend some time in prison, he goes to Plymouth for an other job. David decides to leave to find his aunt, Miss Trotwood, in Dover. His aunt wants to send David back to school and goes to her lawyer, Mr Wickfield in Canterbury. Because David’s school is also in Canterbury, David stays at Mr. Wickfield’s place and meets Mr. Wickfield’s daughter, Agnes, and Mr. Wickfield’s clerk, Uriah Heep, who is studying law and wants to become a lawyer. After David finishes his school he goes on a holiday trip to Peggotty, there he meets old friends like Steerforth, Ham and Emily. Back in London he tells his aunt that he wants to study law. Mr. Spenlow teaches Copperfield law. David falls in love with Mr. Spenlow’s daughter, Dora and wants to marry her.
