6. Main characters:

The narrator
This character is called "the narrator", because otherwise it would be confusing because there are two Mrs. de Winter's: the narrator and Rebecca.
The narrator is a bit shy and insecure about herself. She's 21 years old and a very kind person.

Maxim de Winter
He is a man of 40 years old, good looking and very rich. At the beginning of the story he's very kind but later on he gets a little grumpy, because of the things that happen to him. He's the narrator's husband and the owner of Manderley.

Rebecca

When the story starts she's already dead. She is the late Mrs. De Winter. Most people think she was very beautiful and perfect, but in fact she was a bitch.

Other characters

Mrs. Danvers
She is the housekeeper who still adores Rebecca and that's the reason she hates the narrator She is a very thin and tall woman and very tricky.

Mrs. Van Hopper
She's a fat American woman. The narrator worked for her as a companion when she met Mr. De Winter. Mrs. Van Hopper is not a pleasant woman, she only loves to meet people who are rich and famous.

Frank Crawley
He works at Manderly as an agent. He is responsible for the farms, the woods and streams which belong to Manderley. He's a kind man.

Favell
He is Rebecca's cousin and a real mean person.

Frith
He's the old butler

Beatrice and Giles Lacy
Maxim's sister and her husband.

Ben
A boy who isn't quit normal. He's often on the beach.

Colonel Julyan
He's a police inspector.

7. Time
The story probably took place in the past. The book was first published in 1936 and it isn't a science fiction story so it must have taken place earlier. The clothes that are described are a bit old-fashioned as well.

8. Setting

For the biggest part the story takes place at Manderly. At the beginning of the story it takes place in Monaco and it ends in a hotel on a Mediterranean island.

9. Opinion
I liked the book, because it was very exciting. It wasn't very difficult to read. I really enjoyed reading it and it was exciting till the end. Only at the end you find out what had really happened.

10. Summary
The narrator sits in a hotelroom on an Mediterranean island and thinks of all the horrible things that have happened in the past.

The narrator is in Monaco as a companion of Mrs.Van Hopper. In the hotel she meets Mr. de Winter. When Mrs. Van Hopper gets the flu the narrator spends a few days alone with Mr. de Winter. Just before the narrator leaves Monaco, Maxim proposes to her. She accepts and she quits her job and goes with Maxim to his house in England, called Manderley.
Maxim is a widower because his first wife, Rebecca, drowned in the sea.

The housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers, hates the narrator and always says how well Rebecca did things and how beautiful she was. She still keeps Rebecca's room in order. Maxim is away most of the time, and the narrator often goes to the beach for a walk with the dog, Jasper. There she meets Ben and he is very afraid, because someone told him not to speak about the things he saw.
One day when Maxim isn't at home, Jack Favell comes to Manderley, he used to come there often when Rebecca was still alive. But Maxim doesn't want him to come to Manderley. But he secretly comes to see Mrs. Danvers.

Beatrice and Giles come for a visit and Beatrice likes the narrator very much. One day they have a costume-ball and Mrs. Danvers gives the narrator an idea about what to wear that night. It's the dress of Ms. Caroline de Winter who was on a picture in the hallway. The narrator doesn't want to show her dress to anyone until the evening of the ball.

When Maxim sees the dress he gets very angry because it was the same dress Rebecca wore last year. It was one of Mrs. Danvers' tricks. The narrator is very sad and when Mrs. Danvers sees her standing at the window she says: "Why don't you jump"?
The narrator almost jumps, but suddenly there is a big explosion. A ship has hit the rocks in the bay. When the divers are searching for survivals they find Rebecca’s boat with a body in it.

Maxim tells his wife that he shot Rebecca in the cottage because she told him that she was pregnant of someone else. He carried her body to the boat and sank it by making holes in the wooden planks and by opening the sea-cocks.

Colonel Julyan tells Maxim that there is a inquest. Maxim says he doesn't know anything about the holes and the verdict is suicide.

Mrs Danvers finds the diary of Rebecca and an appointment with Dr.Baker is written in it.
They went to see Dr. Baker and he tells them that Rebacca was not pregnant but that she was very ill and that she had only 6 more month to live. Rebecca knew that she was going to die and wanted Maxim to kill her so she told him lies to make him angry.

When they return to Manderley they see that it's on fire. Mrs Danvers and Favell are gone. Maxime and the narrator move to an island in the Mediterranean were they try to forget everything that happened.
